The garden is home to many different species of plants, including some exotic animals. There are several sections that each section covers, which include ferns, cacti and orchids. It is located on the Badulla Highway, about 5 km from Nuwara Eliya. According to Hindu epic, "The Ramayana", the Hakgala Gardens actually was 'Ashok Vatika". The climate is mostly cool to moderately warm because these gardens are located on elevated ground.
