Northern Lights Tour, Tromso, Local Guide, Private Basecamp

We are traveling via cruise ship to northern Norway seeking a view of the Northern Lights. We booked this tour via Viator with a local tour guide and owner and for a better price than offered by the cruise line for a small group tour. Trygve picked us up at the assigned time and place. He then drove us about an hour out of Tromsø. The ride was safe and warm in a spacious van. We stopped once along the way to observe the northern lights as they were emerging. We then proceeded to Trygve’s private boathouse on a lake. The house was nicely heated and ample warm drinks and snacks were provided. Trygve is a gracious and thoughtful host and an excellent conversationalist. He is particularly enthusiastic and knowledgable about the northern lights. On the evening of our tour we were rewarded by repeated, bright and active northern lights. At times the entire dome of the sky was illuminated! These displays were brilliant and easily seen with the naked eye. On a cold night we were able to warm up then slip outside to observe the show then warm up again as needed. The snacks and drinks were of local origin, plentiful and delicious. Overall, we had a wonderful experience that will provide lasting memories we can share via conversation, the photos we took and the beautiful photos that Trygve took and sent to us the next day. Upon discussion with other passengers, we found that many were disappointed and did not see the lights on their tours and those who were successful had to stay in the cold for an extended period whereas we had a warm and inviting space to be in while waiting for the northern lights to show. We recommend this tour and Trygve’s care to anyone seeking a tour out of Tromsø. A view of the Northern Lights is never guaranteed but a good experience will still be had with Trygve and Tromsø Travel.

You can’t find a better tour guide. He is exceptional. His knowledge of the area is second to none! “T” is the best!

Due to the deteriorating weather, Trygve contacted us to see if we could leave earlier than planned. We left two hours earlier, but that didn't yield the desired result: witnessing one of nature's most extraordinary phenomena, the Northern Lights. We spent an hour at his base camp, where we were treated to delicious snacks and drinks. We enjoyed the silence while the clouds above us largely obscured our view. The experienced guide decided to drive with us for a while, looking for a spot with a clear sky. Along the way, we glimpsed the Northern Lights, and he asked if we were tired. We told him we were fit enough, and then we drove to the Finnish border. He spotted a bit of green among the clouds, which turned out to be a harbinger of something we could only dream of. The heavens cleared, and we had the most fantastic Northern Lights experience. Trygve has proven to be a true Aurora hunter, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The return trip was long, but the adrenaline rush allowed us to reminisce and discuss our sightings for a long time. No one can guarantee seeing the Northern Lights, but Trygve really goes the extra mile to treat its guests to the Aurora Borealis.

This tour is worth very cent! Our guides were a lovely local couple who picked our small group up in Tromso city then went on a 1 hour minivan drive where we stopped anytime the Aurora came out. We visited their rural property for more Aurora photos then we went to their boathouse on the water for better Aurora spotting. There we warmed up with a both inside and outside campfire and got fed endless Norwegian snacks and drinks. They took stunning photos of each person every time the Aurora came out. At the end we were all warm happy and full. Would highly recommend - best Aurora hunting tour you could do in Tromso!

A magical and memorable New Year’s Eve spent with Tromso Travel - we were picked up in the city with a warm welcome and then drove to their private camp where the northern lights made a beautiful appearance in the unspoiled wilderness. Avoiding the bigger crowds and roadside camps we were on in our own private wilderness. It was a small group, everyone was super friendly and we had some nice hot drinks, a fire and snacks including toasting marshmallows. We stopped along the way back to see more northern lights spots and then drove above the city to watch the spectacular NYE fireworks in Tromso. We will be back again, loved every minute of this trip and experiencing it with a local guide and small group was perfect for us.

We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights despite the cloudy conditions at the start of the evening, which made the experience even more special. Our guide, Trygve Lakselvnes, was very professional, clear in his explanations, and extremely welcoming and hospitable throughout the tour. He created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere and made sure everyone felt comfortable. The guide also set up a fire, and delicious local snacks and beverages were provided, which added a very nice touch to the experience. I would not hesitate to book a tour with him again if I visit Tromsø in the future. Highly recommended.

Trygve is a true local and absolute pleasure to tour with, we chatted most of the way there and back and I learnt much about Tromso and Norway. Was lucky to be in a very small group of lovely people and YES we saw lady aurora when expectations were not high, we left snow and clouds behind, Trygve made me feel safe given the avalanche warnings and assured us it was safety first and we would not drive if not safe, I felt better with a local and not going too far yet still achieved amazing results. Trygve also made a small camp fire in the snow for us to keep warm, amazing, I had never seen this! For those that could participate (I am gluten and dairy free and chose not to share) there was also warm juice and sweet treats. I wouldn't hesitate to book with Trygve again, and in fact he might have convinced me to come back in the summer 😊😊
