Driving from Muscat to Nizwa will take around 2 hours drive
We depart Muscat to Nizwa, the old capital of Oman. Visit to the famous Nizwa Fortress. Today, the for is a museum that showcases the history of the fort and surrounding area. Walking through the fortress you get to see amazing views of the ancient town and the nearby mountains. This impressive fortress was a base used in the military to hold off the hardest attacks and seiges.
Next to the historic Nizwa Fort is the vibrant Nizwa Souq, one of the oldest and most famous traditional markets in Oman. The souq is a great place to experience authentic Omani culture and shop for a wide variety of local products. Visitors can browse handcrafted silver jewelry, traditional khanjars (Omani daggers), pottery, woven baskets, frankincense, perfumes, spices, dates, honey, textiles, and souvenirs. The fresh market also offers locally caught fish, meats, fruits, and vegetables. On Friday mornings, the nearby livestock market comes alive with the traditional auction of goats, cattle, and sheep, providing a unique glimpse into Omani heritage. Whether you're shopping, taking photos, or simply exploring, Nizwa Souq offers an unforgettable cultural experience.
Afterward, we drive to the foot of Jebel Akhdar to visit Birkat Al Mouz, a picturesque old village surrounded by lush date palm plantations. Famous for its traditional mud-brick houses and peaceful atmosphere, the village offers a glimpse into Oman’s rich history and rural way of life. Visitors can stroll through the narrow pathways, admire the centuries-old architecture.
Falaj Al Khatmeen irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that continues to supply water to the farms today. Birkat Al Mouz is the perfect place to experience authentic Omani heritage before continuing the journey into the mountains.
From Birkat Al Mouz, we continue our scenic drive up to Jebel Akhdar, also known as the Green Mountain, one of Oman's most spectacular mountain destinations. Rising over 2,000 meters above sea level, Jebel Akhdar enjoys a cooler climate and is famous for its terraced farms, and take in breathtaking panoramic views of the deep canyons and surrounding valleys. Jebel Akhdar offers a perfect combination of natural beauty, local culture, and peaceful mountain scenery. After exploring the Green Mountain, we begin our comfortable drive back to Muscat, bringing an unforgettable day of discovery to a close.
