Came out of Nairobi National Park this evening still grinning. Joseph, our guide, picked us up just after lunch and drove like he’d already spoken to the animals that morning. Soft voice, quick eyes, zero tourist talk. First stop we rolled up on a mixed herd of zebra and wildebeest kicking up dust near the Athi Basin. Ten minutes later Joseph killed the engine and nodded toward a thicket. A black rhino stood there, completely still, city buildings faintly visible behind it. We sat in silence until it moved off. No other cars around. Just that weird, perfect mix of wild and urban. Later a lion pride under a fever tree kept us quiet for a good while. Two cubs tumbling over each other, adults half-asleep. Joseph filled in the gaps without lecturing which female runs the group, how old the cubs are, why they picked that exact tree. Felt more like hanging out with a friend who happens to know every corner of the park. Giraffes drifted past the whole afternoon. Near the end a small elephant family crossed the track right in front of us, slow and unbothered. Light was turning gold by then. Joseph dropped us back with a quiet “Karibu tena” and that was it. What a day. Nairobi National Park completely surprised me. White and black rhinos in the same morning, three lionesses just sitting there watching the world go by, zebras in big groups, hippos, and more wildlife than I expected so close to the city. Our guide Peter was the real star though. He made everything feel easy and exciting at the same time. Knew the park inside out and never rushed a single sighting. If you get the chance, go. We left early, city still waking up, and within twenty minutes we were already watching a family of giraffes calmly walking against the skyline. This morning at Nairobi National Park with Mike was pure magic from the second we rolled through the gate. The city was still waking up behind us, skyscrapers poking the horizon, while ahead the grass stretched wide and the air smelled sharp with dew and wildness. Mike pulled up in his dusty Land Cruiser, grinned like he’d been waiting for this exact sunrise, and said, “Today the park is feeling generous.” He wasn’t wrong. Within twenty minutes we had a pair of black-backed jackals trotting alongside the track like they owned it, then a lone bull giraffe stepping out of the acacia so close I could see the wet shine on his lips. Mike killed the engine and just let the quiet settle. No rushing, no checklist. He pointed out the faint dust clouds far off and muttered, “Lions moved through here before dawn.” We found the pride later, three lionesses stretched under a thorn tree, one cub trying (and failing) to climb her mother’s back. We did a morning game drive at Nairobi National Park and it was a great start to the day. Our guide David was excellent knowledgeable, friendly, and really good at spotting animals. We saw two lions (that was the highlight for me), about a dozen black and white rhinos, plus giraffes and zebras. Being so close to the city and still seeing all that wildlife felt pretty special. The whole experience was fun and relaxed. Would definitely recommend going with David if you get the chance.
