Take everything to refuge

The trip was great, and we had a very good time on our hike to Toubkal. Our guides were very nice, helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding regarding the luggage. The ticket I purchased stated that a mule would carry our luggage, so I left my warm clothes and toiletries in a separate bag. However, this bag was never delivered to the refuge, which meant I didn’t have any warm clothes for the hike to Toubkal. Luckily, our guides let me borrow some clothes, so I was still able to complete the hike and enjoy the experience. I would also recommend bringing some extra snacks and food with you, as the meals provided were not quite enough to maintain your energy for this type of hike.

3 day tour Toubkal

To get proper acclimatisation (I usually live at sea level), I chose the 3-day Mount Toubkal tour plus an extra night in Imlil before the climb, and it worked very well for me. On the first hiking day I joined a 2-day group: we were 17 people with 3 guides. I really enjoyed the atmosphere with the group during the trail and at the refuge. On summit day, my guide Houssien and I started at 4 a.m. I decided to keep a steady pace, so we continued separately from the faster group. This worked perfectly for me, especially because it was my first experience using crampons on snow. Houssien supported me throughout the whole trek, not only with his mountain skills but also with his personality. I would describe him as the perfect mountain man: calm, genuine, experienced, and with a great sense of humour. He carried everything that might be needed in his backpack. Even though I had two pairs of gloves with me, my hands froze near the summit, and he immediately gave me proper mountaineering gloves. On the third day we returned to Imlil in the morning and reached Sidi Chamharouch in only two hours. I strongly recommend the 3-day option. In my opinion it is not only about strength or hiking ability. I am used to hiking and have done many excursions in Italy and Ireland (Alps, Apennines, Wicklow Mountains, Kerry, etc.). Even though I had never been above 4000 metres before, I had already completed technically more difficult trails with mud and slippery grass. The real challenge on Toubkal is the altitude, and I believe having more time helps you enjoy the mountain much more safely and peacefully.

Did the 5 Day/ 4 Night Trek

Tips I booked two tours with Omar Adventures. The first was 12 days touring the country with a friend, and the second was the 5 day/ 4 night Mount Toubkal trek on my own, with a small group. It was the highlight of Morocco and so much fun! It’s a strenuous trek you need to be in good physical shape for. Stunning views, and our professional guide Ayoub was the best. Ayoub speaks 4 languages fluently, and is also learning German. He set the pace for us to adjust to the altitude and summit Mount Toubkal comfortably. The cook prepared delicious meals for us. Several people in other groups doing the two-day trek turned back, but our group took our time; we made it and had the summit and hike back to the refuge to ourselves. The Imlil valley and the Toubkal National Park are so beautiful, beyond words. Some tips: I was so focused on the first part of the trip, I hadn’t entirely prepared for the trek. The trek from Imlil Valley up to the Refuge is a lot of elevation gain, from about 6,000 feet (1829 M) to the refuge at 10,521 ft (3,207 M). The trek from the refuge to the Toubkal summit at 13,671 ft (4,167 M) was all snow (April after a heavy winter). Omar had everything I needed; jacket, gloves, poles, plus for rent were crampons, helmet, and ice axe. Our guide Ayoub lent me his gaiters. Some tips: Remember to bring cash in dirham for gear (about 400-500 dirham) and to tip the cook and guide. Huts along the way sold freshly squeezed orange juice for 20 dirham (about $2 USD). Wear good boots/ trekking shoes, dress in layers, bring sunglasses. Altitude medication helped me a lot. A good knapsack with waistband support is recommended. The Refuge is charming but it is primitive lodging. TP is offered for sale. There is no hot water or heat, other than a wood stove which may not be burning. The Refuge dorm sleeps about 25 people side by side, so the room stays warm. If I were to do it again I would bring my silk sleeping bag liner; sleeping bags are rented. I used my scarf to cover my pillow (no pillow case). There were no sheets or duvets, blankets are provided. The trek is rewarding and the views are gorgeous. It was so worth it, memories of a lifetime.

Amazing experience, lovely people, but you need to be in good shape. It's quite challenging but not technically.

Best guides EVER!

What an incredible 2 day experience. Firstly I want to leave an incredible review for Brahim, Ayoub and Yusef, who were our guides, they were not only extremely experienced and trustworthy, but fun and extremely caring. This trek is not for the faint of heart, I definitely underestimated how difficult this experience would be, but if I could bottle the feeling you get once you reach the summit I would! The trip was very affordable for what you get. Brahim was extremely encouraging of me during the final push to the summit, Ayoub helped me when my legs gave out and I fell, and Yusef actually carried my bag for the last 30mins back to the car as he insisted he was strong and my legs were too tired (he was right!) The food was great, thank you so much to the chef, and the refuge was nice for what you get! Bring your own toilet paper/wipes and hand sanitizer/soap. Overall the experience was really made by the guides. We made friends with some lovely people in our group, and although it was an extremely mentally and physically challenging experience, it was so worth it. Notes I will add are maybe bring ear plugs for sleeping at night (shared a room with 25 people), and be aware that the altitude makes it hard to sleep at night. Also take a LOT of snacks and water, you will have the opportunity to buy water at every stop in imlil, and the guides will inform you of all of this, but definitely take things like nuts and protein bars for your energy!

Mount Toubkal with fantastic Guides

This trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal is one of the most challenging and rewarding things I’ve ever done. We were very lucky with the conditions — great weather, clear skies, no wind, and snow from around 3,000m all the way to the summit. Omar and his team of guides were excellent. On the first day, trekking up to the refuge, you barely noticed the guides which is actually a good sign. But on summit day, starting the ascent in the dark, they were outstanding. Safety was always front of mind: keeping the group close together, setting a steady pace, and providing constant encouragement. The final ascent is steep and tough, and the guides were genuinely motivating at the points when you really need it. On the way up to the refuge there are several places to buy water, juice, etc. A few practical tips: Take a 35L rucksack — a small day pack isn’t sufficient. Bring toilet paper. Take cash (Euros or Moroccan Dirhams). We needed to hire an ice axe, helmet, crampons, and sleeping bag. We’d brought some of our own kit, but there were no donkeys taking gear up and it wouldn’t all fit in our rucksacks. This is a fantastic adventure. My legs ached afterwards, but the sense of achievement was absolutely worth it.

Incredible experience, HYDRATE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THE DAY BEFORE

This hike is not for the feint of heart. Amazing experience overall, our guides were fantastic and reaching the top of the mountain was one of the most rewarding accomplishments of my life. That being said, there are a lot of things I wish I did differently. Here are some of my tips: - Hydrate and eat as much as physically possible the day before - Bring at least 4 pairs of extra socks - Pack light, do not expect to shower at base camp, the water is freezing cold - Bring AT LEAST 500 MAD - Prepare physically; you will hurt yourself if you are not in decent shape - Bring earplugs + sleeping bag for sleeping at base camp - No toilet paper at base camp, do with this information as you will - Bring lots of extra snacks: lots of sugar, candy, beef jerky, electrolyte powder, and protein bars will ensure you don’t cramp. I promise no matter how much you bring you’ll wish you brought more The most important part of this trip is willpower. No matter how strong you are, 80% of the battle is your willpower and how hard you can push yourself to get up the mountain. If you are unable to summit the mountain on the second day they will let you stay at base camp.

I couldn't have celebrated my birthday better!

The tour was really one of the most beautiful experiences I have had so far. You were provided with everything and the tour guides were really great. It was taken care of every care and I always felt safe. I can recommend this tour to anyone from the heart. I thank Omar and the whole team for this unforgettable experience!

Muy recomendable

I went on this two-day trip with my friend in March, and although conditions at the summit were tough, the guides Ayoub and Hussein helped us with everything (equipment, motivation, etc.). The food was very good and plentiful, and we didn't feel cold in the refuge. If you like the mountains, I definitely recommend it.
