Description
Discover the cradle of our independency! Guimarães is a town in the northern region that preserves the medieval style and structure. In this visit, you will understand the history and roots of the portuguese! Guimarães is deply related to the most important events in Portugal's foundation, and also our first capital back on the 12th century. Since then, the area has kept its structure, including the castle and fortified wall. Today, countless pieces that tell the history of Portugal are still very present and visible to everyone. On this tour you will visit the most iconic monuments in the country, but also discover true treasures that even few residents know about! By the afternoon we take a journey to the highest point in about 40km, from where you will have contact with the greenest area of the surroundings, with a fantastic view over the town of Guimarães.

Guimaraes Castle
Get to know this imposing medieval castle up close. Originally built in the 10th century, it has undergone numerous transformations over time, and the most notable events that led to the emancipation of Portugal as a country passed through it.
Paco dos Duques de Braganca
Wonderful original 15th century palace with notable assets and decoration. You will visit a space/museum that is still one of the official residences of the presidency.
Montanha- Parque da Penha
After we reach the hill top by van, you will be amazed by green and rocky areas, that have shaped little trails in between. We will stroll a bit around them and have a wide perspective for the city and sorroundings.
Centro Historico de Guimaraes
Admire the narrow streets and small squares preserved from medieval times. We will touch a lot of details and gems of this classified site (UNESCO 2001).
Zona de Couros
The old neighbour of the tannery workers. We will understand the processes behind this intensive and hard work.
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira
The oldest construction in town (X century). Understanding the purposes and evolution of the monument and surrounding areas.

Frankly castle and magnificent I advise you all to visit it outside and superb also it contains on the knights and outdoors.

Great tour and an awesome guide!
Great experience from the initial contact to the drop off at the end. Our guide, Ricardo, was friendly and professional. He was extremely flexible to adjust the schedule to the weather. The tour was well organized, the transportation was first rate. On the tour itself, he was very knowledge on the history of the old town and sites of Guimarães. The trip up to the Penha area was an unexpectedly gem of a stop. The folks from Kansas highly recommend this tour.
