The Ben Youssef Madrasa is a historical Islamic college located in Marrakech, Morocco. It’s named after the adjacent Ben Youssef Mosque and was commissioned by the Saadian sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib in 1564–65 CE. At its peak, it was the largest Islamic college in the Maghreb and is celebrated as a high point of Saadian and Moroccan architecture1.
The madrasa served as a center for learning, where students were educated in Maliki Islamic law, jurisprudence, and various readings of the Qur’an. The Saadian dynasty, known for their lineage as sharifs (descendants of Muhammad), constructed the madrasa following a style established during the earlier Marinid period. It could accommodate over 800 students and functioned until 1960 before being refurbished and reopened to the public as a historical site in 1982. It closed for restoration again in November 2018 and reopened in April 2021.

Guide in Marrakech.
A beautiful activity that I recommend if this is your first visit to Marrakech.
Do not hesitate to take a guide on the first day of your stay to better understand how the Medina and the souks work.
The history, anecdotes, and kindness of our guide Youssef will remain a wonderful experience.

Basic introduction: two historic sites and the souks
We were picked up from our riad and visited the Medersa Ben Youssef (entry 5 Euros), then walked through the souks to the Jardin Secret (entry 10 Euros) and then walked some more through the souks ending in the main square, the Jemma al-Fnaa. Our guide told us about the dynastic history of Morroco and each of the places we visited. This was all pretty interesting.
What we were less content about was firstly at each site the guide left us on our own to wander about - in the Jardin Secret for more than half an hour suggesting we get a coffee (which we didn't want). He then took us to several shops were we felt quite pressurised to buy and had to be clear that we were not interested. In the natural goods pharmacy we were immediately offered mint-tea and then given a very hard sell and we felt obliged to buy things we had not intended to get. Meanwhile our guide was having tea on the rooftop. Throughout, sadly, it felt as though we were being guided to spending opportunities.
So, yes, do this tour but make it clear (if this is the case) that you do not want to do any shopping at all and don't necessarily need a coffee stop!
Operator response
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed discovering the historic sites and learning about Morocco’s dynastic history.
We’re sorry to hear that some aspects of the tour did not meet your expectations. We always strive to balance cultural explanations with free time so that visitors can explore at their own pace. Regarding the shop visits, they are part of the souk experience, but we understand that they may not be suitable for everyone. We will make sure to be more attentive to our guests’ preferences in the future.
If you ever return to Marrakech, we would be happy to offer you a fully customized tour, without shopping stops or coffee breaks if that’s your preference. Please feel free to reach out to us directly for a more personalized experience.
Thank you again for your feedback and for joining our tour!
