Everyone should do this tour!
What an experience. From meeting the wonderful Herera lady and her family to learning about the history of the township Michelle brings the whole experience to life, and ypu feel like you have known her forever. You can see and understand the issues of living in a township, what day to day life looks like throught multiple peoples eyes. Plus in my case listen to some amazing music while eating traditional food. The food market was fascinating and spinach will never be the same again!
In the DRC i met a Nama herbalist who explained the use of local plants and herbs in traditional medicine. She also tried to explain the Damara/Nama language, which considering that there are only 4 click sounds and a few words to accompany them is extremely complicated and if you get it wrong could land you in hot water!
You also get to understand the history of Swakopmund, changes in building use from station to hotel etc, how the different communities mix with each other amd everything else in between all in the space of 3 hours
This was one of the highlights of my trip to Namibia and can't recommend this tour enough. I also came away with a beautiful original painting by a local artist that Michelle knew, so I will always have the memories every time i look at it.

Fantastic experience with Desert Scenic Tours - Michelle is a wonderful tour guid
I had an amazing experience with Desert Scenic Tours doing the Township tour, and several other tours during my time in Swakopmund. The company does several other interesting excursions, such as Spitzkoppe, which makes for a fantastic day trip from Swakopmund. Michelle our tour guide was exceptional - super knowledgeable, informative and very friendly. Michelle is like a friend you’ve known for years - she’s very sociable and strives to make your experience unforgettable. Lunch was delicious! I strongly recommend Desert Scenic Tours when in Swakopmund to organise excursions across the region.

Interesting Cultural Township Tour in Swakopmund
Vicco was our tour guide and did an excellent job explaining Swakopmund’s Damara, Herero, and Ovambo township cultural sectors. My favorite part of the tour was learning about the language and visiting a women’s empowerment project. The women made several crafts to earn money. We also visited a local restaurant, Hafeni and tasted the local foods which was a great experience. This tour was booked by our hotel and we were charged a slightly higher price than what the hotel originally advertised. Regardless, the tour was excellent and worth the price. I highly recommend Vicco if you want to experience the culture and history!
Operator response
Thank you so much for the wonderful review and my apologies for the incorrect pricing, we will rectify this with the hotel for future reference. Enjoy the rest of your Namibia trip and safe travels.
