Itinerary

Admission included

Head inside Kew Gardens and then spend as little or as much time as you like exploring London’s finest botanical gardens. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kew Gardens consists of acres of tranquil grounds with one of the world’s largest collections of plants. Either walk around at leisure or join one of the free guided walking tours that take place daily in the gardens. Stroll around admiring highlights like the Azalea Garden, Minka House and Bamboo Garden in the center of the park. Check out the 17th century-style Queen’s Garden near Kew Palace (also known as the Dutch House), and see several of Kew’s oldest sculptures that were donated by the British Royal Family. Perhaps take a walk along the Rhizotron and Xstrara Treetop Walkway, and stroll through the crowns of oak trees at a height of 59 feet (18m), seeing birdlife, fungi and lichen up close. Watch out for the 10-storey Pagoda in the southwest corner of the gardens, and wander along the Holly Walk, seeing trees that have grown there for over 130 years. Bask in balmy tropical temperatures inside Temperate House – the world’s largest surviving Victorian glasshouse – and see a spectacular array of African plants and sub-tropical trees and palms. In the center of the beautiful building is a Chilean Wine Palm, which is said to be one of the world’s tallest indoor plants. With plenty of leafy picnic areas, as well as four cafés on site, you can eat lunch inside the gardens (own expense), or simply sit down and relax in between seeing all the rich flora and fauna.

A Great Place to Visit

My husband and I spent 3 hours here exploring the greenhouse, conservancy and the lovely Kew Palace. We were seriously impressed with the selection of plants and trees, particularly the giant Lilly pads in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. It was the hottest day of the year, so managed to see everything we wanted too, but knew that we hadn’t been able to fit it all in. The staff in the palace were particularly lovely and very knowledgeable. We had a lovely time here at Kew!

Misinformed and dreadfully disappointing

Family trip to London for mums 80th birthday Hampton Court, Kew and Westminster We entered by the main gate and directed to our booth to pay, the attendant was polite enough but had difficulty in hearing us due to her air conditioning blowing into the microphone, mums in a wheelchair so we got a small discount which was swallowed up by the 10% donation and gift aid we did ( willingly ) we were then given our map and and told we would have to walk in between the 6 stops the train would have taken us to as it wasn’t working due to the excessive heat - we were then told some of the attractions were closed for refurbishment and one closed for a wedding, we then asked about the herbarium and told it was invite only If we had been informed before we paid we would not have gone in as pushing a wheelchair in 38” heat is not got the faint hearted We then proceeded to the beautiful Victorian glass house housing very few trees and plants as they were being moved in preparation for more refurbishment, Due to the excessive heat and lack of water the outside plants and grass had mostly died with the exception of flower beds in prominent places All in all I think we should of been told and Im sure it is a wonderful place to visit when we are not in drought and they are not refurbing The Thomas Moore collection was lovely to see

Good day out

Bring a water bottle. There are water refill spots around the park. Avoid buying the overpriced water cans there

Give yourself enough time

For the price, Kew Gardens felt worth it and you can easily spend all day there. Just like any event space, there part or activity expect high prices for things once you're in. It can be as adorable or as expensive as you want if you're prepared. I would recommend avoiding really hot days as some of the green houses are set to a hot climate for the sake of the plants.

Gardens nice, catering very bad.

The gardens are indeed lovely but the facilities, especially the food facilities, are woeful. The pavilion had a 40min queue just to order the food, as they had turned off the table-ordering service. The place looked dingy and understaffed. We ended up eating at the so called ‘food village’ which was a litter-strewn patch of brown grass without shade (the few tables provided with shade were full). Tasty food but tiny portions for big prices. Bring your own food!

Operator response

We are sorry to hear that your experience with our catering at the Pavilion and the Food Village did not live up to expectations! We will ensure your feedback is passed on to our catering team so they can take your thoughts into consideration in the future. -Adara

A paradise next to London

Accessible by subway, between London and Heathrow, this large green paradise welcomes you in a peaceful and picturesque neighborhood. A map is given to you at the entrance so you don't get lost in 121 hectares. The paths are suitable for everyone (on foot, strollers, wheelchairs,...) and crisscross the gardens. Small trains available at the Victoria Gate entrance allow you to go around without getting too tired, with the possibility of getting off at one of the 6 stops. There is one every 1/2 hour. There are many attractions to visit: the Great Pagoda (253 steps), the Treetop Walkway, a walk on suspended walkways (elevator available), greenhouses: Palm House, Temperate House, Princess of Wales Conservatory, landscaped gardens: Japanese Gateway, Carbon Garden, and many others. Restaurants or snack bars allow you to eat without going too far. In summary, one day is not enough to fully discover this Eden but it already allows you to enjoy it well. To be done as often as you like, but definitely at least once!

Excellent day out

Had a great day out at Kew today. Arrived at 10am and left at 5pm. Had more to see but we were both shattered from all the walking 8 miles+. Well worth it though it was very enjoyable. Princess of Wales conservatory was great. A few areas closed or broken which was a shame such as Arboretum nursery, Minka House and lift for treetop walkway. Kew Palace and Royal kitchens closed at 4pm too which I thought was too early as the site didn’t close until 7pm. Still lots to see and do besides these. I think we easily could have spent another full day there. We actually enjoyed watching the planes go over every 90 seconds too. Officially plane spotting nerds now. Food in Pavilion bar and grill was poor quality and overpriced. We’d take our own picnic next time as it really was poor. Wouldn’t hesitate to go again however, we both had a great day 😃
