Kauai Waimea Canyon & Na Pali Lookouts Self-Guided Audio Tour

Itinerary

Admission not included60 min

Be sure to check out the Kauai Coffee’s visitor center. They offer free coffee samples in a large variety of flavors, what a great way to start off your morning!

Pass by

Visit this once an impressive fort, with 20 feet high and 17 feet wide walls that shaped like a star Pāʻulaʻula State Historic Site, formerly known as Russian Fort Elizabeth, preserves a fascinating chapter of Kauaʻi’s history. The site is currently closed for construction, but you’ll hear its story and significance as you pass the area on the tour.

15 min

Here in Waimea Town, there are some local places to shop and eat. Stop by if you need a quick snack for the road, but other than that we suggest you skip this spot for now and save it for your return trip. We’ll guide you back, we promise!

Admission not included5 min

If you’ve been to Hawaii, you’ve probably seen a few waterfalls, but this waterfall is particularly unique. It runs through Kauai’s red dirt instead of lush green jungle which is what you normally see. Stop by for a quick picture and then continue into the park.

Admission not included15 min

While you're on the trail, check out the interpretive signs that describe the native plants. The trail is actually named after a rare, exotic plant -- the iliau or Kaua'i greensword -- that is found nowhere else in the world but here on Kaua'i. This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour.

Admission not included15 min

This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour. This is the first of two lookouts of Waimea Canyon. This lookout has some of the best views on a clear day. Stand atop the lookout to take in the expansive views of this natural wonder.

5 min

We’ll guide you to pull into a small parking lot for a view of an 800-foot waterfall that cascades into the canyon.

Pass by

This is the second of the two lookouts for Waimea Canyon. Here at the end of the parking lot is the trailhead for Canyon Trail. The trail signs are a little confusing, so read the description under Hiking in our app Highlights before hiking. Puʻu Hinahina offers expansive views of Waimea Canyon and the surrounding landscape. The Puʻu Hinahina parking lot is currently closed, so do not stop unless official signage indicates safe, legal access. If access is unavailable, continue along the tour route to the next viewpoint.

Admission not included60 min

Here is our first major hike for the day! The trail starts at the parking lot, and you’ll travel about ¾ of a mile through lush jungle to a spot called Cliff Viewpoint. This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour.

20 min

The lodge and museum at Koke'e are located at a small plateau in the mountain. The lodge is a sit-down restaurant with decent food if you are hungry. If you are lucky, sometimes they have live music! At the museum, there is a display of native plants, animals, and birds.

Admission not included15 min

Here you will find your first view of the glorious Na Pali Coast. However, don’t be upset if dense fog prevents you from seeing any views. It’s typical at this altitude. Try waiting it out a few minutes as the fog tends to come and go in waves. This stop is within Waimea Canyon or Kōkeʻe State Park. Any required park entry and parking fees are paid separately directly to the park and are not included with the Shaka Guide tour.

Pass by

From this lookout, you get a view of the iconic Na Pali coast. You can also see the peak of Mt. Wai’ale’ale and a swamp called Alaka’i Swamp - one of the wettest places on the entire planet with about 450 inches of rain a year.

10 min

Their shave ice comes in a wide range of tropical and traditional flavors. We recommend getting one of their combos with vanilla or macadamia nut ice cream. Their small size is plenty big enough to share.

20 min

At the base of the mountain, just past the old swinging bridge is a hidden gem that reveals a fascinating part of Kauai's past: the Menehune Ditch. You might be thinking to yourself, what’s so cool about a ditch? Well, we’ll tell you the story of the Menehune who constructed this ditch thousands of years ago.

20 min

In 1778, Captain Cook became the first Westerner to discover Hawaii. The place where Cook first set foot in Hawai'i is right here in Waimea. We'll point out his statue in the middle of town.

30 min

Here in Hanapepe, there are a few quaint art boutiques, restaurants, murals, and an interesting little bookstore called Talk Story. In fact, it’s the westernmost bookstore in the United States! Feel free to stop anytime as we do a quick drive through the town.

5 min

If you’re interested in checking out a cool swinging bridge, there's one in Hanapepe. Look for the sign when you're walking around town.

Pass by

Hanapepe is only a few minutes from Lawai, where you started the tour. We’ll guide you back in that direction with a fun story about Kauai's "state bird" along the way.

Great idea

It started out great. Narration is really good and interesting. Unfortunately our app kept restarting from the beginning of the tour and it would catch back up but eventually it stopped updating to where we left off.

Operator response

Aloha Angela, Mahalo for sharing your feedback with us. We are truly sorry to hear about the technical glitch you experienced! That is definitely not the seamless experience we want for you while exploring Waimea Canyon. Because this tour was purchased through Viator, the quickest path to getting a refund is directly through your Viator account or customer support team, as they handle all third-party billing directly. We'd love the chance to make things right and look into what went wrong with the app. If you're open to connecting, please drop us a line at aloha@shakaguide.com. We’d be so grateful to hear from you. Wishing you safe and wonderful travels ahead! Mahalo, Shaka Guide Team

Such a fun tour - we loved it!

This was such a cool thing to be able to do! At my family’s own pace… without some big tour group where we felt trapped… we all loved this! Well… maybe not my 13 year old daughter but she doesn’t love much these days ;) overall though, besides the fact that the main road to the canyon was closed, we were able to enjoy the majority of the tour, get some cool stories, legends, history lessons and Hawaiian music along the way… a winner on this one for me and my family!

Operator response

Aloha Jessica, Even with the unexpected detour on the main route, we’re thrilled you still got to soak up all the local legends, tunes, and heritage along the way. Thanks for bringing us along on your family’s island journey—can't wait to explore with you guys again! Mahalo, Shaka Guide Team

Good tour

Good trip. Lots of traffic on Sunday. Nice weather and a beautiful drive up to the top of the Canyon and back

Operator response

Aloha T, We are thrilled that you got to enjoy a beautiful drive up to the top and back in some nice weather. Sunday traffic can definitely test your patience on the road, but we hope having Shaka Guide along as your co-pilot helped pass the time with some great history and storytelling. Thank you so much for exploring Kauai with us! Mahalo, Shaka Guide Support 🤙

Very easy download with help from customer service. I loved all the information that was given along the road

Operator response

Aloha Lindi, Glad the team was able to get you up and running. Once that part's out of the way, Waimea and Nā Pali are easy to settle into. Sounds like you could just enjoy the drive and let the stories unfold as you made your way through the canyon. Mahalo for exploring with Shaka Guide 🤙

Overall Disappointed

The route was closed and we had to find our own way. Cell service was spotty at best. Due to being detoured we missed most of the trip. Disappointing.

Operator response

Hi Deborah, We're sorry to hear your visit didn't go as planned. Unfortunately, road closures and detours are determined by the local authorities and are outside of Shaka Guide's control. Because Shaka Guide is an offline GPS audio tour, the narration follows the published tour route and doesn't automatically reroute like Google Maps or other navigation apps when a detour is required. The good news is that the tours themselves work offline once downloaded, so cell service isn't required to enjoy them. We always recommend downloading the app and tours before leaving an area with Wi-Fi. We wish you'd reached out while you were on the island—we're always happy to help when unexpected road conditions come up. We appreciate you sharing your experience, and we hope you'll consider giving the tour another try if you're back on Kauaʻi when the full route is open. — Leo H 🤙 Detour Trail Guide 🛣️

Waimea and Napali Fam Adv

This tour app made our trip so much better. The instructions were clear, the timing was perfect, and every stop felt thoughtfully planned. It took away all the guesswork and enjoyed the experience.

Operator response

Aloha Anna, Our main goal is to take away all the guesswork so you can just kick back, relax, and enjoy the scenery and we're glad that it hit the mark for you! Mahalo for letting us ride shotgun with you on Kauai, and we can't wait to explore with you again on your next big adventure! With warm aloha, Shaka Guide Team 🤙

Inspiring

Beautiful and breath taking. Definitely worth it. There are a few hikes you should be prepared for with good hiking shoes and water.

Operator response

Aloha Rick, Thank you so much for the wonderful review and for sharing that excellent advice with fellow travelers! The red dirt and clay along trails like the Canyon Trail or Pihea Trail can get incredibly slick and muddy, so being prepared with proper footwear and plenty of hydration is the absolute best way to safely enjoy those landscapes. Mahalo for letting us ride shotgun with you through Kauai's spectacular canyons and coastlines, and we can't wait to hit the road with you again on your next big adventure! With warm aloha, Shaka Guide Team 🤙
