Description
Today Vienna is home to the fourth Jewish community in its history. This fact alone points to the long and rich Jewish history of this city. Without doubt, the history of the Jewish people in this place has been very eventful and deeply interesting, albeit oftentimes tragic. On this tour, we explore the oldest part of Vienna, the First district, where most traces and sites of Vienna’s rich Jewish past and present can be found: those of the first and significant Medieval Jewish community, and the magnificent achievements of the third, which was instrumental in fuelling Vienna’s cultural and economic thriving during the Founder’s time, Vienna's ‘Belle époque’. Beyond these aspects, we gain a comprehensive overview of the entire history with the help of the excellent Jewish Museum of Vienna, whose two closely situated dependencies offer a vividly narrated insight into all aspects past and present, as well as an accessible archaeological excavation site of the Medieval synagogue.

the main house of the Jewish museum Vienna focusses on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Jewish communities of Vienna from the 1600s until today.

In this house the aim is to illustrate the Medieval Jewish community of Vienna. Also included is a visit to the archaeological site of the Medieval synagogue.

here stands the only historical synagogue of Vienna which was not destroyed in the November Pogrom of 1938. We talk about its history and architecture. However, as it is currently undergoing renovations, it is not possible to enter the building.
the location of the Simon Wiesenthal Institute in Vienna. A small museum about Wiesenthal's life and work is on site, however it is not accessible on late afternoons or on weekends.
Once the location of the Hotel Metropol, the 'Jewish Sacher', later that of the Gestapo headquarters. We talk about the history of this place over time, and have a look towards Leopoldstadt across the Danube canal, which was in various epochs and is again today the centre of (orthodox) Jewish like in Vienna.
