Description

The history of Jews in Oslo and Norway is brief and distinctive. This tour is also unusual as it covers most of the history on one street. We will begin in front of the location where the first Jewish family settled in Oslo and continue up the city's main street Karl Johan. The street was always bustling with activity, and it's no surprise that Jewish businessmen also opened stores there. Monuments, the Parliament building, and even the city's main church all have some connection to Jewish history. The tour is accompanied by many visual materials and stories from Oslo's Jewish community. Tour ends by the synagogue. Unfortunately It is not always possible to visit it. If your preferred date is unavailable, please send a message with your preferred tour time. The author’s booklet, Unretouched History, features historical photographs, a map, and stories about Jewish history in Oslo included with every booking.

Exceptional Jewish Heritage Tour with Rami

We had an excellent Jewish Heritage tour of Oslo with Rami. He was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the history of the Jewish community in Norway. He shared fascinating stories and historical context that brought each site to life and gave us a much deeper appreciation for Oslo’s Jewish heritage. Rami was friendly, patient, and happy to answer all of our questions. His personal insights and thoughtful presentation made the tour both educational and meaningful. We left with a much greater understanding of the resilience and contributions of the Jewish community in Oslo. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in history, culture, or learning more about Norway’s Jewish heritage. Thank you, Rami, for such a memorable experience!

Disappointing experience

The guide was hard to understand. We asked questions along the way and he dodged answer saying: I’ll tell you later. He pointed out Statues of people friendly to Jews but not Jewish themselves. We did not see the holocaust museum/jewish museum. We did see a menorah in the back of a hotel, and a synagogue. Would have been a better experience had we met Jewish people, a kosher butcher, observed a Jewish school, Jewish cemetery than walk and walk only to be lectured about what was, not what is. Guide was humorless and not interesting in the least. Big big disappointment!

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I'm genuinely sorry that the tour did not meet your expectations. I would, however, like to clarify a few points. Jewish history is not only the history of Jews themselves. In Norway, it is also the story of the people who stood by the Jewish community and helped secure its future. This is why the tour includes monuments and locations connected with both Jewish history and those who played an important role in it. I carefully reviewed the tour description after reading your review. It does not include visits to either the Holocaust Center, which is located well outside the city center, or the Jewish Museum. Unfortunately, the Jewish Museum is currently closed for long-term renovation, making a visit impossible. You mentioned that I spoke too much about the past. However, this is a tour about the history of the Jewish community in Norway, so historical events naturally form its main focus. Since this was a private tour, I would have been happy to adapt the discussion to your interests had I known you wanted to focus more on contemporary Jewish life. The menorah we visited is connected with events from just ten years ago and is, in my opinion, very much part of modern Jewish life in Oslo. You also mentioned that you would have liked to visit a kosher butcher. Unfortunately, Norway has not had one for almost a century because kosher slaughter has long been prohibited. As for a Jewish school, there is no Jewish day school in Norway, and in any case your visit took place during the summer holidays. Finally, I was sorry to learn that even the visit to Norway's oldest synagogue did not leave a positive impression. The synagogue is not normally open to visitors, and it was opened especially for you, which should be considered as a unique opportunity. I appreciate your comments and wish you all the best in your future travels.

One of the best Jewish Tours ever taken

If we could give Rami a 6 or 7, we would gladly do so. We cannot say enough positive things about how much we learned on our tour today and how much we enjoyed Rami’s ability to bring the stories he shared to life with pictures and places he pointed out. I have taken Jewish focused tours in many cities throughout Europe and this was truly one of the best. We very much appreciated being able to visit the synagogue during our tour. I did my homework in advance and saw only positive reviews and now I know why firsthand. Rami is an excellent tour guide.
