Sultanahmet square used to be a hippodrome in the Eastern Roman period. For public entertainment, they were arranging chariot races and to split the track there brought monuments from all over the world such as the Egyptian obelisk, and serpent column. The second largest mosque in the old city was built by the order of Sultan Ahmet The 1st and it is also known as Sultanahmet mosque which is the original name. Decorated with blue and turquoise tiles. It was the second biggest mosque in the capital of the Ottoman Empire from 1617.
