Description

Experience the story of the Great Irish Famine, also known as the Irish Potato Famine or Great Hunger – a devastating period of mass starvation, disease, emigration and death in 19th-century Ireland. View original artefacts including historic newspaper reports, a personal letter from the era, and a famine soup pot that bring the human reality of the tragedy to life. Follow the epic story of Irish emigration as millions left their homeland for new lives in Canada, America, Britain and Australia, shaping the global Irish diaspora. Unlike larger general history museums in Dublin, this exhibition offers a more intimate and focused exploration of one of the most defining events in Irish history. Allow around one hour to explore the illustrated panels and watch a 15-minute documentary overview. A high-quality book on the famine is also available to purchase. This temporary exhibition aims to help inspire a permanent Irish Famine museum in Dublin.

Moving and powerful educational experience

I learned so much from this exhibit. I much appreciated the clearly presented posters about different aspects of the famine, with compelling photographs, maps, and other archival materials displayed in a visitor -friendly format. I feel that for the first time I understand the complex causes of the famine as well as its devastating human costs over so many years. Every visitor to Ireland should learn this history!

Excellent overall

It was very thorough and offered excellent explanations for all responses to blight and subsequent famine. More could be done to highlight the experiences of women who bore the brunt of family labor and large numbers of children.

Very informative exhibition about the Irish potato famine

A small but very informative exhibition about the Irish potato famine in the 1840s-50s. The exhibition is easy to follow and shows a clear timeline from what led to the famine right up until the end of it.

Historique

A very intersting museum. A good argument to tel to people who talk about « the death of communisme ». Liberalisme and private propriety is a part of this famine, like colonialisme.

Needs to be a permanent exhibit.

I think this is an important exhibition but a bit basic. Would have liked more of an interactive element just to mix it up. Also would like a mention that the Irish are more inclined to call it the Great Hunger.
