The best way to visit the Cañada de la Virgen is with an expert guide. Along the way, we will share our knowledge of cultures of the Bajio region, including the Otomi people and other Mesoamerican cultures. After visiting the Welcome Center, we will walk a total of approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) together, taking the same path as the ancients. We will show you recent discoveries at the archaeological site and you’ll be able to climb to the top of the pyramid. Along the way, you will see the impressive landscapes as your mind goes on a journey. You will leave with a more thorough knowledge of this wonderful, historical site.

Fascinating tour
Alberto was an incredible guide, probably the best we’ve ever experienced. A true polymath, his knowledge about and passion for so many different topics was stunning. He had a poetic yet very scientific approach and he is the lead ethnic historian for Cañada de la Virgen. He has participated in DNA analyses helping to shape groundbreaking theories about this fascinating archaeological site. He was very enthusiastic, and a great storyteller, it was almost like reading a thriller, hearing his account of history. Can’t recommend this highly enough, spectacular!

An Amazing La Cañada de la Virgen Tour with Horacio
Horacio was an entertaining and knowledgeable guide who made the entire trip both educational and adventurous. The visit to the pyramid of La Cañada was such a memorable experience, and Horacio did a great job bringing the history and significance of the area to life. We highly recommend this trip!

Great tour!
Horacio was a fantastic guide! So passionate about the site and Mexican history in general. The tour exceeded our expectations. Climbing the pyramid was a bit steep but doable even at 65 and 70! Highly recommend this tour.

We felt like VIP’s
Horatio was a wonderful historian and storyteller. He was knowledgeable and unhurried as we explored the ruins. It’s incredible to see the ancient roads and artifacts, and everything has been meticulously maintained and/or restored for a one-of-a-kind experience. And how surreal to climb the pyramid and imagine what it must have been like in its time. We felt like VIP’s in Horatio’s care! He truly went above and beyond for us. Thank you, Horatio!!

Wonderful!
An amazing experience!!! Our guide was so informative and had a lot of new information as he had assisted with excavations when they were active. The site only allows 2 hours which is just enough. Yes it is uphill and downhill walking. You cannot take backpacks or bags with you past the visitor center. You can take water bottles carried by hand. The drive is not far and starting at 9am we were back at the meeting place by 2pm. I would highly recommend this to ANYONE visiting near San Miguel. It is a little pricey for a 1/2 day tour but the knowledge is priceless.
