Inhabited since pre-Historic times, Conímbriga was occupied by Roman troops in 139 BC and it became the prosperous capital city of the Lusitania province. In the next century, during the reign of Emperor Augustus, the urban part of the city grew. It was during this period that some of the most important buildings for everyday life in a Roman city were build such as the forum, the amphitheatre and the thermal baths. Later, a three-nave basilica was built in the town’s centre.
You can also visit the Museum where several rooms will take you to everyday life at this Roman city through objects discovered after many years of excavations, its religious life, architecture manor houses and their decoration and even life at the forum.
Cascata Do Rio De Mouros
180 min
Hike through the Mouros River valley, past the waterfall where the Romans bathed and making much of the route on the banks of the same river. We will also pass by a small village at the base of Sicó Mountain. It is a 10 kms very pleasant hike.

Soke up the real culture
Awesome history and hiking. Great pick up and communication. The description may be for more than this hike. There was no souvenir photo or professional photographer, but that is not a deal breaker. Alfredo took our photo with our phone. The water in the river is dry without a lot of rain so there might not be a waterfall. 5 stars. Alfredo was soooo informed and genuine.

If you want something different from city touring do this!!
Alfredo was the best tour guide. We hiked along the ‘dry’ Mouros River early in the morning so it was cool - Beautiful views, bridges that crossed the river and well marked path. Alfredo gave us options for easier or more challenging ways to travel. We chose the more challenging ways and did not regret anything. The Roman ruins were equally interesting. Alfredo made sure we knew the history of the ruins and gave us free time to explore on our own. He pointed out many things which we would have missed on our own. I recommend this tour for anyone wanting to get out of the city for a quiet day in the mountains outside Coimbra.

Take a Nature Break
We had a lovely time with Alfredo! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the Roman Ruins. He also ensured the hike was at a pace and difficulty that fit our group. We couldn’t recommend it more! Great way to get out of the city and out into nature.

Knowledgeable guide!
It had been raining and the guide's advice was that the trail would be slippery and involved some rock scrambles, so we decided to instead go to the RO, a museum dedicated to the ancient Roman presence in current-day Portugal. It serves as a great introduction to the Conimbriga ruins. If you're like me, the last time you studied Roman history in earnest was in secondary school, so it was a great refresher for my knowledge and it never ceases to be fascinating the technology and civil infrastructure that the Romans built and enjoyed, that was later lost to the world for centuries.
After the museum, we explored Conimbriga and they surely must be some of the most well-preserved Roman ruins in all of Europe! It's in good enough shape to easily imagine yourself living there 2000 years ago.
I probably still would have enjoyed hiking, rain or shine, but I appreciate the guide's flexibility and the tour was a great success by any measure.
Operator response
Thank you for your nice review, Chris. I'm glad you liked the alternative tour and, due to the weather conditions, I believe it was the best option!

A wonderful morning hiking near Coimbra
We had a brilliant morning hiking and viewing the Roman ruins at Conimbriga with Alfredo. We were picked up at our Airbnb in Coimbra, and driven around 20 mins to the start of the hike site. It was a beautiful morning and after a few days in Lisbon it was lovely to get outside for some fresh air. The hike is not too challenging but I'd still recommend decent footwear as some sections were a little slippery. The Roman ruins exceeded all expectations and were incredibly impressive. Alfredo gave us the history as we walked around and answered our questions as we went. Highly recommended.
Operator response
Thank you for your nice review, Claire. To be able to have an hike into nature just outside of Coimbra and visiting the Conimbriga roman ruins in the same tour is something special...!

The hike was really...
The hike was really beautiful, and the ruins (with excellent explanation by Alberto) were very interesting. (Note that the hike involved some scrambling, so it is not suitable for people with a lack of agility.)
Operator response
Thank you for your nice review, Kent. The hike is very beautiful indeed and the ruins, well, is the better preserved roman city in Portugal...!

We enjoyed this tour. It was great to do a short hike in the countryside. Unfortunately the river was dry but the trail was still
very enjoyable. The tour of the ruins was very good. Alfredo was very knowledgeable and provided great insight into the history of the ruins.Would recommend this tour to others .

Amazing visit!
Alfredo was the most amazing guide, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the history of the ruins and nature of the landscape. He was friendly, interesting, and gracious and let us set the pace on the hike and indeed the whole tour. Conímbriga is a “must see” — especially the mosaics and fountains. The hike was a lot of fun too (wear the right shoes!) We will definitely come back and maybe try to catch a performance one evening at the ruins.
Operator response
Thank you for your nice review Edith. It was really a nice afternoon with you. And, ofcourse, Conimbriga and the Mouros River valley are amazing...!
