An extraordinary visit to Herculaneum with Mario

We visited the archaeological excavations of Herculaneum accompanied by Mario and it was a truly exceptional experience! Mario is a very well-prepared, competent guide who is passionate about his work. Thanks to his archaeological training and deep knowledge of Roman history, he managed to make us relive the daily life of ancient Herculaneum, telling us curiosities, anecdotes, and details that we would have hardly discovered on our own. What distinguishes him is the ability to explain even the most complex topics in a simple, engaging, and never boring way, alternating historical information, friendliness, and a pinch of irony. It was not a simple guided tour, but a real journey back in time. The two hours flew by! We recommend Mario without any hesitation to anyone who wishes to visit Herculaneum with a professional, passionate guide capable of bringing history to life. Thank you, Mario, for this beautiful experience!

Herculaneum came to life!

We had a truly excellent visit to Herculaneum this morning with Mario. With degrees in history and archaeology he is extremely well informed and very personable at the same time. He’s been doing this for 20 years and and is still as enthusiastic and interested in the excavations today. He organized our transportation, which went off without a hitch and met us in site. While I’m sure he could’ve given a longer tour and held our attention all day, he did an expert job at giving an overview in the two hours we had to spend there. I’ll be thinking about the people from 2000 years ago I feel I got to know today for a long time. Don’t hesitate for a second to hire Mario.

Operator response

Thank you so much for these incredibly generous words. Reading that Herculaneum “came to life” for you is exactly the kind of feedback that makes this work so rewarding. After so many years of guiding, my fascination with Herculaneum has never faded. In fact, the more I study it and the more the excavations continue to reveal, the more interesting it becomes. That constant sense of discovery is one of the reasons I still approach every tour with the same curiosity and enthusiasm I had at the beginning. With a background in history and archaeology, I always try to give guests more than a list of dates and monuments. Herculaneum is at its most powerful when you begin to see the people behind the buildings: the families who lived in those houses, the businesses, the baths, the objects they used every day, and the routines that suddenly make the ancient city feel surprisingly close to us. I am especially pleased that the two-hour visit felt complete and meaningful. A shorter tour does not have to feel rushed if the route is chosen carefully. The real skill is knowing what to select, what to explain, and how to connect each stop so that the guest leaves with a clear picture of the city rather than a collection of disconnected facts. Thank you also for mentioning the transportation. I am glad that everything ran smoothly from beginning to end. For me, good organization should be almost invisible: the logistics should simply work so that guests can focus entirely on the experience. Your final sentence means a great deal to me. Knowing that you will keep thinking about the people of Herculaneum long after the tour is probably the best compliment a guide could receive. Thank you again for your trust, your curiosity, and for such a thoughtful recommendation. Mario Frenna - amazing private tour guide

Mario Frenna was a great Naples area private tour guide find! Great communication led to seamless pickup in the historic district. He pointed out sites as we drove thru city to Herculaneum, spent hours showing and explaining to us all about Herculaneum. He is an archeologist by training and historian exemplar. Amazing day. He did archeo. digs in college at Pompeii. Fluent in several languages, so knowledgeable and personable. He also does Pompeii tours and Amalfi Coast arrangements. Highly recommend

Operator response

Dear Allison, thank you so much for this extraordinary review. It was a genuine pleasure spending the day with you and sharing Herculaneum together. I am especially happy that you appreciated the communication before the tour and the seamless pickup in Naples’ historic district. For me, a private experience begins before we ever reach the archaeological site. Even the drive through Naples is an opportunity to introduce the city, point out landmarks, explain the urban landscape, and give context to the history of the region. Herculaneum is one of the places I love guiding most because it allows us to get incredibly close to Roman daily life. The preservation of houses, upper floors, wooden elements, shops, baths, and domestic spaces creates a level of intimacy that is truly extraordinary. My archaeological background has always shaped the way I guide. I do not want guests to simply look at ancient structures; I want them to understand how archaeologists interpret evidence, how we reconstruct daily life from material remains, and how each building fits into the larger story of the city. I am also very grateful for your kind words about my knowledge and personality. For me, expertise is only useful if it can be communicated clearly and naturally. A private tour should be informative, but also conversational, engaging, flexible, and enjoyable. And yes, beyond Herculaneum, we also organize private Pompeii tours, Amalfi Coast experiences, transfers, and customized days throughout the region. One of the advantages of working with a small local family-run company is that we can connect these different experiences and build the day around the guest rather than forcing everyone into the same standard format. Thank you again for your trust, your recommendation, and for such generous words about my work. I am truly happy that the day felt both enriching and memorable. Great tour of Herculaneum

We had a wonderful tour of Herculaneum with Mario. He was very knowledgable having studied archeology and he made sure the tour was both fun and informative. We would not hesitate to recommend him and if we return to Napoli would definitely book another tour with him.

Operator response

Thank you so much, Nicky, for your kind words. It was a real pleasure to guide you through Herculaneum. I am very happy that you appreciated both the archaeological depth of the tour and the lighter, more enjoyable way in which I try to present it. Herculaneum is an extraordinary site because so much of everyday Roman life has survived there in a very intimate way. Thanks to the preservation of houses, upper floors, wooden elements, shops, baths, and domestic spaces, it is possible to understand not only how the city looked, but how people actually lived inside it. As an archaeology graduate and licensed national tour guide, I care deeply about accuracy, but I also believe that history should never feel heavy. A good tour should make people curious, encourage questions, create connections, and leave room for a few laughs along the way. The greatest compliment in your review is knowing that, if you return to Naples, you would choose to tour with me again. That means more than any advertising ever could. Thank you again for your trust and recommendation. I sincerely hope this will not be your last visit to our region, and I would be delighted to show you another side of Campania next time. Herculaneum fantastic

We booked a private guided tour of the Herculaneum excavations directly with Mario, complete with skip-the-line tickets. The organization was perfect: Mario provided us with all the directions in advance and met us directly at the entrance to the site. Thanks to the tickets already purchased, we entered immediately, without wasting time in line. The choice of a private tour proved to be essential. Mario was able to adapt the route to our interests, leaving us all the time necessary to observe the buildings, take photographs, and ask questions. Visiting Herculaneum with a knowledgeable guide allows you to understand details that, walking alone through the ruins, would risk going completely unnoticed. Mario is a very competent archaeological guide, with a deep knowledge of Greco-Roman history. At the same time, he manages to explain even the most complex topics in a clear, pleasant, and engaging way. He does not limit himself to describing what you see, but through his stories he reconstructs the daily life of the ancient inhabitants and manages to almost make the city come alive before the visitors' eyes. During the tour, he showed us the houses, the shops, the baths, the mosaics, the frescoes, and the public buildings, also explaining the differences between the eruption that buried Herculaneum and the one that struck Pompeii. Particularly interesting were the explanations on the exceptional preservation of the buildings, the upper floors, and the organic materials, such as carbonized wood. Mario is a passionate, professional, patient guide who is always available to answer questions. His enthusiasm is contagious and makes the visit interesting from beginning to end. We highly recommend his private tour to anyone who wishes to discover Herculaneum in depth and have an authentic, well-organized, and emotion-filled experience.

Best guide and tour we have ever had!

Mario provided an amazing set of tours and was the best guide my family has ever had! We went to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis over two days. My teenage sons and I love history and Mario's historical and archaeological knowledge and passion surpassed anything we could have imagined. Additionally, he helped arrange transportation, which not only made the whole experience very smooth on some very hot days but also provided lively commentary on everything from history to local food. We are so appreciative of our time with Mario and his team. We just wished we could have had more time learning from them.

Operator response

Dear Kari, “Best guide and tour we have ever had” — I have to admit, that is a difficult compliment to beat! Thank you so much. Reading your review genuinely made me happy. Spending those two days with you and your sons was an absolute pleasure for me as well. There is something particularly rewarding about guiding people who already have a real curiosity for history, because it allows us to go beyond the standard explanations, ask more questions, make connections between different sites and really explore the ancient world together. And you certainly chose the right combination for that! Visiting **Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis** over two days gives you three very different perspectives on the same Roman world. Pompeii gives us an extraordinary picture of an entire city; Herculaneum allows us to get incredibly close to the private and everyday lives of its inhabitants; and Oplontis, with its magnificent Roman villa, opens another window onto wealth, architecture, decoration and elite life around the Bay of Naples. For someone like me who has dedicated years to archaeology and Greco-Roman history, having the time to connect these places rather than treating them as isolated attractions is exactly the kind of guiding I enjoy most. And having two teenage boys who were genuinely interested and wanted to learn made it even more fun! I also appreciate your comments about the organization and transportation. Those were some seriously hot August days! Having reliable private transportation waiting for you between archaeological sites makes an enormous difference, particularly during the hottest part of the Italian summer. And with our drivers, apparently even the transfer becomes part of the tour — history, local life, food and probably a few opinions about where you should eat next! What touched me most, however, was your last sentence: that you wished you had more time to keep learning with us. For a guide, there really isn't a better compliment. My objective has never been simply to show people ancient ruins and fill two hours with dates and names. I want my guests to leave curious, to understand how these people actually lived, and perhaps to look at the Roman world a little differently than they did before we met. Thank you, Kari, for trusting me and my team with two days of your family vacation. I loved our time together, and please tell your sons that we have barely scratched the surface — there is still an enormous amount of Roman Campania waiting for them! So perhaps next time, we'll simply have to continue where we left off. Exceptional Service, Unforgettable Tours & a Team You Can Truly Rely On!

This was our second time hiring Mario and the Visit Amalfi Coast team, and once again, the experience was exceptional from beginning to end. This time, we were traveling as a group of 11, with several transfers scheduled, including transportation from Naples and later to Rome. Everything was perfectly organized and always on time. Mario’s drivers and guides are consistently some of the most professional, reliable, and pleasant people we have encountered during our travels in Italy. One of the highlights of our trip was our tour of Herculaneum with Mario himself. We visited during an intense summer heatwave, and our group included kids, teenagers, adults, and seniors—not an easy audience to keep engaged! Yet Mario managed to captivate everyone. His knowledge, enthusiasm, humor, and wonderful personality made the history come alive, and the entire group thoroughly enjoyed the experience despite the heat. What impressed us most, however, was how Mario and his team handled an unexpected emergency. We had to change our flight overnight and leave earlier than planned, which completely changed our transportation arrangements, including the airport we needed to reach. With very little notice, Mario reorganized everything for our group of 11 and made sure we had the transportation we needed the very next morning. During a stressful situation, knowing that we could rely on him was incredibly reassuring. Mario is always pleasant, responsive, accommodating, and genuinely committed to taking care of his guests. His transfers are punctual, his vehicles and service are excellent, and the professionalism of his entire team is outstanding. I have recommended Visit Amalfi Coast to several friends over the years, and every single person who has used them has also had a five-star experience. After two wonderful experiences of our own, I can recommend Mario and his team without hesitation. When we return to the Amalfi Coast, there is no question who we will call. Grazie mille, Mario, for once again taking such wonderful care of our family and friends!

Operator response

Dear Thais, What an incredible review to read. Thank you so much, not only for your beautiful words, but above all for trusting my team and me for the *second time* with your family and friends. For me, there is no greater compliment than having guests come back to us. And knowing that over the years you have also recommended Visit Amalfi Coast to your friends — and that they too have had five-star experiences — means more to me than I can say. For a small, family-run company like ours, this kind of trust and word of mouth is truly priceless. I especially enjoyed our time together in Herculaneum. I still remember that heat! Keeping a group of 11 — from kids and teenagers to adults and seniors — interested in Roman history under the August sun was certainly a challenge, but it was also so much fun. As a guide, one of my greatest satisfactions is seeing history become something alive and enjoyable for people of completely different ages and interests. Knowing that everyone had a great time makes me very happy. I also really appreciate what you wrote about the last-minute flight change. When something unexpected happens during a trip, especially with a group of 11 people, it can become incredibly stressful very quickly. At that moment, my priority was simply to find a solution and make sure you could all leave the following morning without having another problem to worry about. This is exactly the kind of service I want my company to provide: not simply a driver or a tour guide, but **someone here in Italy you know you can call and rely on when you need help.** Thais, after two trips together and all the friends you have sent our way, I think we are well beyond a simple client-company relationship. It has been a genuine pleasure taking care of you, your family and your friends. Thank you again for your loyalty, your recommendations and this wonderful review. Whenever you return to Naples and the Amalfi Coast, you already know who to call — and I will be very happy to see you all again! Grazie di cuore, Thais, and arrivederci! Herculaneum through the eyes of those who truly know it

We chose the private tour of Herculaneum with pickup and drop-off directly at our hotel in Naples, and the entire experience was impeccable from start to finish. Diego came to pick us up on time in a brand-new Mercedes vehicle that was spacious, perfectly clean, and equipped with air conditioning. He was extremely kind and thoughtful, helping us at every moment and making us feel at ease right away. For us, it was truly pleasant to be able to visit Herculaneum without worrying about traffic, parking, tickets, or the organization of the transfer. Upon arrival, we met Mario, our private guide, and from that moment on, Herculaneum literally came to life. Mario does not just list dates and information: thanks to his archaeological training, his passion, and his deep knowledge of the site, he made us observe every building and every detail through the eyes of someone who truly studies and loves archaeology. He helped us imagine the houses inhabited, the streets traveled by the ancient inhabitants, the shops, the baths, and the daily life of the city before the eruption. His explanations are clear, engaging, and never heavy. He knew how to adapt the pace of the visit to our needs, allowing us all the necessary time and making us always feel looked after. We also greatly appreciated the completely private and all-inclusive formula: transport from our hotel, a top-level vehicle, entrance tickets, and a private guide. No lines, no stress, and no wasted time. Herculaneum is an extraordinary place, but visiting it with Mario gave it a completely different meaning. We did not simply see an archaeological site: for a few hours, it felt like we were entering the life of a real Roman city. An experience organized with great professionalism, but also with that personal care and hospitality that only a local business can offer. We recommend this tour without hesitation to anyone who wishes to discover Herculaneum in an authentic, in-depth, and comfortable way.

Lesser known, but not less than Pompeii

For our port stop in Naples, we (parents & two teens) chose to tour Herculaneum as most of us had previously toured Pompeii. The communication, service and quality of this transfer & tour was exceptional. Our guide Mario was personable, knowledgeable and engaging. Herculaneum is an exceptional site with exceptional stories and, in my opinion, superior to Pompeii.

Dear Holly, Thank you so much for your wonderful review! It was a real pleasure meeting you and your family, and I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed discovering Herculaneum together. Many travelers automatically choose Pompeii because it's the more famous archaeological site, but as you discovered, Herculaneum offers an entirely different perspective on the Roman world. Thanks to the unique circumstances of the eruption of AD 79, many organic materials, wooden structures, and even everyday objects have survived in extraordinary condition, allowing visitors to experience an incredibly intimate glimpse into ancient Roman life. Thank you also for your kind words about my guiding. As a licensed Italian National Tour Guide with an academic background in archaeology, my goal is always to transform archaeological remains into real stories about the people who once lived there. I believe that understanding the history behind what you see makes every stone, house, and fresco much more meaningful. We're also very pleased that you appreciated our communication and organization from start to finish. We believe that an exceptional experience begins long before the tour itself. Thank you again for choosing our family business. We hope to welcome you back to Italy one day—there are still many fascinating archaeological treasures waiting to be discovered!
