Harlem Jazz Tour: NYC Speakeasies and Juke Joints - Live Jazz

Description
This is Big Apple Jazz Tours' most popular tour for the past 25 years. We created a truly immersive experience that walks you in the footsteps of Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. Enjoy Harlem's best live jazz in a minimum of two hidden jazz haunts for hours of swinging music. Perfectly integrated into the natural flow of the evening, we pause to see and hear about Harlem’s historic past and dynamic current scene. Learn about the Cotton Club, Savoy Ballroom, Minton’s Playhouse, Swing Street, The Tree of Hope, and the Apollo Theater. If you’re a player or singer, let us know so we can help you join the jam. If you’re feeling sociable, your guide can introduce you to all the cats. Where necessary, all music charges at clubs & transportation included! We create the ideal itinerary each night, so you're guaranteed to hear the best shows available no matter which night of the week you join.

Gordon, our tour guide, was very attentive, informative, and friendly. He kept us informed the day of the tour and even provided me with suggestions of things to do in the area as we were early. Gordon is extremely knowledgeable about all things jazz! I was very impressed at the end of the night as Gordon advised the owner of the last venue that it was my husband’s birthday. The band sang a personal happy birthday song to him which was unexpected and quite a memorable experience! Great tour!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a kind review. It was a great pleasure to meet the family and get to share that special birthday in Harlem with Joe. Please keep in touch so I can help you find more great live jazz events throughout the city. Peace, Gordon
It was wonderful to get to tap into Gordon’s knowledge of the history and current jazz scene in Harlem and New York in general. We throughly enjoy our tour and have decided to look him up every time we are in the city.
You guys are amazing. Thanks for sharing your warmth and knowledge and humor, and helping to make it a great night of jazz and football! See you again soon. Let me know the next time you're coming to town, every night can be a different itinerary. Peace, Gordon
Gordon was a fantastic host! His extensive knowledge of the past and current jazz scene and key players in NYC was impressive. The food was delicious, bands were jumping, and people met-instant friends. We had a wonderful time!
Woohoo! I couldn't have asked for a more enthusiastic and good natured group! We all lucked out last Friday! Thanks for bringing the love and curiosity and good will to the Experience; and signing up at the last possible second to make it a really special night. I hope we meet again and get to enjoy more jazzy nights together, perhaps after P. makes NYC his home! Peace, Gordon
Our family did the Round Midnight tour with Amanda to celebrate my dad’s 86 birthday and it surpassed our expectations. My dad ABSOLUTELY loved it! So much fun and would have never had that same experience going out on our own. Amanda was so much fun and made sure that the night was perfect for our family.
Thank you for your lovely review. We are delighted that your dad got the birthday celebration he dreamed of and you were all able to celebrate together with Amanda and the Harlem jazz scene. Amanda always puts everything she has into making the Experience great. Thanks again for taking the time to share your enthusiasm. Peace, Gordon
We had an incredible night on the Harlem Jazz tour with Gordon. Gordon has a special bond with the close knit jazz community in Harlem. We started the evening at Bessie’s Place to celebrate the birthday of a local jazz legend with impromptu drop-in performances by local artists..an almost spiritual experience! We finished the evening at a Jamaican restaurant and bar with great food and great music. Gordon is an encyclopedia of New York jazz history and it was a pleasure to spend the evening with him. We highly recommend this tour!
It was a delight to share this once-in-a-lifetime night with such a charming couple. I’m so glad it worked out so well and we were able to experience all of Harlem’s best vocalists all in one place celebrating Boncellia’s birthday. You got a taste of the Harlem spirit that I fell in love with 30 years ago, and that continues to thrill me to this day. And we had such a nice group of visitors to enjoy it with!! Thanks for adding to the positivity of the night and for such a nice review. I hope we meet again. Peace, Gordon
IF YOU LOVE MUSIC LOOK NO FURTHER! Quite Simply one of the BEST NIGHTS my husband and I have EVER EXPERIENCED!!! We met Gordan in Harlem. The communication was first rate from the start - accommodating, attentive and relaxed. We sampled some delicious dishes and heard some incredible live jazz/blues while Gordan spoke to us with a great knowledge and love and passion about musicians and the Harlem scene. We then went to a second bar and the place erupted!!! My god what TALENT! 2 fabulous sets played by crazily talented musicians, it was truly astonishing! We love music and go to many live shows but have never ever heard anything like this! We were on a high for days!!! A night we will treasure forever and a friend in Gordan that we shall keep forever too! We are determined to go back to New York more than ever - and we will DEFINITELY be meeting up with Gordan again to learn from his extensive experiences and knowledge and to listen to Harlem jazz…it lives on…see for yourselves
I can't possibly thank you enough for joining the tour and sharing such enthusiasm for the clubs and musicians. You were both really wonderful company and so easy to be around. And this review is so meaningful! Thanks for sharing your delight with the world. I'm so glad we'll have more nights like that again. Have a great trip down south...I'll start putting together some travel ideas for you. Peace, Gordon
A fabulous night of entertainment in Harlem, hosted by our charming guide Gordon, a passionate fan of jazz, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the district and its musical history. We began our evening with soul food and tunes in Patrick’s on the Hill, where we met guitarist Michael Howells who played with Dizzy Gillespie before sampling the Red Rooster. Great house band, joined by guest soloists, an evening full of soul and style. We’ve rarely seen such a fashionably dressed crowd who made us very welcome. Harlem has a rich creative and cultural history, and provides another special chapter in New York’s extraordinary story. A highly recommended night out. Thanks Gordon.
What a great recap and review of our fantastic evening together Lindsay and Lynda. You were such a great couple to hang out with all night in these intimate clubs. The musicians we met really enjoyed your company too. I hope we get a chance to enjoy some great jazz and cocktails again on your return trips to the city. If you ever need more playlists or club recommendations, I hope you'll feel free to get in touch. Until next time... Peace, Gordon
This was more than I could have imagined. Gordon made sure we had the best evening ever. The blues at Silvana and the jam session at the New Amsterdam Musical Association were so much fun. One of the best things I did in New York.
That’s so nice, Nidhi. You were a delight to hang out with. It was great sharing the evening with you and such a fun group. Thanks for your wonderful review…Music to my ears! : ) Peace, Gordon
Honestly, I was very dissatisfied and felt missing out. I was hoping to visit clubs and listen to several kind of music. Means... a lot of music and some talking. Actually, it was the opposite The first "groove" club was GREAT, but we left right before the real session started and most of croud shuffled in. Very sad since the misic was great and probably got even better. Then... a lot of talking and storyteller but when we got the second club we barely were able to participate the fun. The third club was under renovation, so we bailed. To make a long story short... I should have put 100$ on "real" show, rather than this tour. If you are after storyteller and history ... Gordon is your man. If you after the music .. skip.
Thank you, Shimon, for your honest assessment of our tour together. It's gratifying to know that you thoroughly enjoyed the first club and would have stayed to hear more. We are always striving to create just the right mix of storytelling and a variety of great music, which apparently we were not able to achieve to your satisfaction and for that we are truly sorry. I hope our good will offer to invite you on a free tour helped to display that our heart is in the right place and we welcome a second chance to prove that Big Apple Jazz can deliver a 5-star experience to your satisfaction. Peace, Gordon
If you don’t already know your way around the Harlem jazz scene, Gordon is the way to start. He’s been doing this for decades so knows this works intimately, as he himself owned a club uptown for many years. He took us to hear Phil Young’s House of Blues at the Silvana bar/restaurant - the music was fantastic, all top-flight musicians, led by drummer Phil himself, one of the most engaging musicians I’ve ever heard/seen. What a delight! Very happy crowd there, excellent food and drink too and nice looking place. We also walked all around parts of Harlem, such beautiful architecture! And then went to open-microphone club where we had the great fortune to hearsay player James Carter, who just happened to be there. Very fun, I recommend.
I'm so glad you and Nico enjoyed the night in Harlem so much, Andrea. It was a gorgeous summer night and the music was fantastic. We were lucky that all the elements came together so well, and you got to experience the Harlem jazz community's open arms - I hope you guys can come back and try another night soon. The scene has more variety to offer each night of the week. Thanks again for the wonderful review. Peace, Gordon
