Description
Explore Gobustan museum, ancient petroglyphs and mud volcanoes on a private 4-hour tour with a local guide. Gobustan National Park is one of Azerbaijan’s most popular sights attracting thousands of tourists annually. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. The stone carvings found in this area date back to between 5,000 and 20,000 years ago. One of the most exhilarating images is the ritualistic dance of early humans. There are a lot of similarities between Gobustan stone carvings and images found in other parts of the world. The boat motif is a typical example of Bronze Age art.
Throughout this journey, you will be guided by a professional and local English speaking tour guide. After the visit to Gobustan, you will also get direct experience with mud volcanoes (no worries, these volcanoes are actually cold!).
Our guide will also share useful information about the country, its culture and life in general to make your stay in Baku much more interesting and exciting!
Prices are per person when two book together; a solo traveller pays $175.
Larger groups pay less per person.
Out at sunset: the 2:00 PM departure is under way when the sun sets, around 5:48 PM in the coming weeks.
From the operator’s live schedule on Viator, checked Oct 11.

Gobustan Rock Art
Admission included120 min
We will utilize a private car/private minibus (depending on the number of people joining the tour) to reach Gobustan National Reserve. At Gobustan Museum you will get a broad information from your tour guide and explore life of Gobustan's ancient inhabitants through interactive screens and expositions.
After visiting Gobustan museum, you will advance to the mountain in order to see real rock paintings in the open air museum. The petroglyphs (stone carvings) located in Gobustan are as significant as Chauvet Caves, and were left untouched for milleniums until discovered in the 1930s. You will have a chance to witness those prehistoric engravings, including images of old inhabitants that seem to be dancing a tribal dance!
Mud Volcanoes
20 min
Later on, the tour will proceed to the mud volcanoes area which is 20 mins away from Gobustan National Museum. Azerbaijan keeps the first place in the world for the number of mud volcanoes. About 300 mud volcanoes are to be found in Azerbaijan – at the shore, in the sea and on islands. During this trip you will get a great chance to see these rare and active volcanoes from very close distance. Some people swear by the mud's medical benefits, so it might be worth to try it on your skin!
Important Note:
On wet seasons/rainy weather conditions, the Mud Volcanoes can be very muddy and impossible to reach by car. Therefore, in case of rainy weather/bad road conditions the trip to mud volcanoes will be substituted with a visit to Bibiheybat Mosque on the way back to the city center.

Gobustan & Mud Volcanoes
Amazing tour with Shahin. He was so knowledgeable about the whole area including how and why the mud volcanoes exist. He also knew a lot about the Gobustan rock art which was fascinating. Our driver also made sure we found some Azerbaijani saffron at a small spice shop to take home and had a good recommendation for dinner.

Great tour to Gobustan!
We had a great private tour of the Gobustan petroglyphs and the Mud Vulcanos Museum.
Traveling with our three small children, the private car was esential, making the journey so comfortable and flexible.
Our guide, Mirhashim was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights that truly brought the sites to life for both of us and the kids. His patience and expertise made this an unforgettable experience for our whole family. We genuinely appreciate it!
Would have loved to have more time and explore more trips with the same company!

Nice & Helpful guide - Riad
The experience through the app was good. My guide Riad was very very good, nice guy… trip was hassle free. Though I found the price for the trip was bit expensive. Was a small trip. Just a sight seeing…
Operator response
Thank you Prasad for the excellent review! For cheaper price, I always recommend to book it through our official website.
And would love to know why you consider it as a small trip (4.5 hours) and "just a sightseeing"? I really would like to hear back from you, so we get even better.

Great (and muddy) Day at the Mud Volcanoes and Gobustan
I had an amazing day with our guide Seymur and our driver. There was only one other person on the tour, which I think made everything go a bit smoother for the day.
We first went to the mud volcanoes which were really impressive. We needed to transfer to a 4x4 because of the road conditions and the mud.
I would highly advise boots/wellies in the autumn/winter as they suggest when booking, which I clearly didn't see! I had comfortable walking shoes (these were great for the rest of the tour) which were completely caked in mud by the time we were done at the volcanoes - but it was definitely worth it! We were provided bags for our shoes, but I wasn't able to keep mine on properly when sinking into the mud (and lost my shoe once or twice). We were helped to clean our shoes before transfering back to the original vehicle.
I should also note, there is another option that is not off-road at all and you are able to stay clean, away from the mud, but we wanted to get up close to the volcanoes!
Next we went to the Gobustan Museum where we learned about what Gobustan was like hundreds of thousands of years ago (covered by the sea) and what it's like now. We also learned about the animals and people that used to live in the area long ago - as well as all of the petroglyphs in Gobustan.
Finally, we went to see the petroglyphs which ranged from 40,000 years ago to just a few thousand years ago.
I would highly recommend this tour!

Great tour with Gunay in Qobustan!
We had a great time with Gunay on our tour out to Qobustan and theud volcanoes! Gunay was a genuine pleasure to your with. She's very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and funny. Do yourself a favor and get out of Baku for this tour. The length is perfect to still enjoy an afternoon in Baku, and you'll see a truly interesting and different part of the world with great company.

Good half day tour
Booked the small group, and it was only me, which was great as I could do it all at my pace.
The tour guide arif was a lovely guy and was able to answer my questions.
Overall, I enjoyed visiting both sites, each unique in their own way.
I would recommend this tour.
