Itinerary

Admission not included60 min

After pickup at the arranged meeting point in Baku, we drive 50 minutes to the Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve. Guests begin their journey at the Gobustan Museum, a cutting-edge facility showcasing over 6,000 Stone Age rock engravings that depict prehistoric hunting, rituals and daily life. The museum provides a deep scientific context, enhancing understanding of the region’s archaeological and cultural significance. Visitors spend approximately 60 minutes here with explanations from their private guide.

Gobustan Rock Art
Admission not included40 min

Next, the tour moves 3 minutes to the Gobustan Rock Shelters and Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These shelters contain thousands of petroglyphs dating back 40,000 years, revealing the behavior, social structure, and spiritual practices of early humans. The natural formations also served as protective living spaces and communal areas. Archaeological excavations have uncovered tools, pottery, and dwelling remnants, offering a comprehensive view of prehistoric life. Guests spend about 40 minutes exploring this extraordinary landscape.

60 min

The journey continues with 20 minutes driving to the Gobustan Mud Volcanoes, where over 50 geological formations dominate the surreal terrain. These mud volcanoes are formed as natural gas, primarily methane, rises through underground sediments, mixing with water and erupting as mud, creating conical mounds that evolve over time. The landscape is both scientifically fascinating and visually striking, perfect for observation and photography. Visitors spend around 30 minutes witnessing this rare geological phenomenon.

Bibi-Heybat Mosque
20 min

On the return to Baku, we stop after 50 minutes at Bibi Heybat Mosque, a historically and architecturally significant structure originally built in the 13th century and reconstructed in the 1990s. The mosque represents classic Islamic architecture and remains a spiritual landmark. Guests explore the site for 15 minutes with insights from their guide.

Ateshgah - Fire Temple
Admission not included60 min

The tour then proceeds 40 minutes driving to Ateshgah - the Fire Temple of Baku, an ancient Zoroastrian site in Surakhani. Built in the 17th–18th centuries atop natural gas vents, the temple’s central fire pit exemplifies the region’s long-standing fire-worship tradition. This sacred site highlights the interplay between natural phenomena and spiritual practices, attracting historians, archaeologists and cultural tourists. Guests spend 40 minutes immersed in the temple’s unique ambiance.

Yanar Dag
Admission not included30 min

The final stop is Yanardag - Burning Mountain, located 30 minutes from the Fire Temple. This natural eternal flame has burned continuously for centuries, with flames reaching up to 3 meters high from porous sandstone vents. Unlike mud volcanoes, Yanardag produces a steady, mesmerizing wall of fire, especially dramatic at dusk. Guests spend 30 minutes observing this natural wonder while enjoying panoramic scenery. The tour concludes with a 40-minute drive back to the hotel or arranged drop-off point in Baku. The total duration is 7-8 hours under standard conditionsş

A Different Day Around Baku

Have you ever seen a mountain that burns, mud that bubbles like it is alive and drawings made on rocks thousands of years ago all in one day? That is what made this tour so interesting for us. We visited Baku just after Formula 1, and the city still had a really nice atmosphere. You could still feel the energy around the streets and it made our stay even more enjoyable. The pickup from the hotel was easy and on time. The car was comfortable, the driver was calm and professional, and everything was organized smoothly. Our guide was friendly and easy to understand. He explained the important things without giving too much information, answered our questions, and gave us enough time at every stop. I think this is also one of the biggest advantages of a private tour. You do not feel rushed, you can ask questions freely, spend a little more time at the places you enjoy most, and the whole day feels more relaxed and personal. The mud volcanoes were very unusual. The landscape looks completely different from the city, and seeing the mud bubbling naturally from the ground was something new for us. The Gobustan Museum was worth visiting before the rock carvings. It helped us understand the history better, so when we reached the rock shelters and ancient drawings, everything made more sense. The Fire Temple was another interesting stop because of the story behind it. Yanar Dag was a nice way to finish the tour. Seeing natural fire coming from the hillside is simple, but very memorable. A small tip: wear comfortable shoes, take some water and bring sunglasses or sun protection if the weather is warm. I would also recommend visiting the museum before the rock carvings. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day with a good guide, careful driver, comfortable transport and a nice mix of history, nature and unusual places. The relaxed pace of the private tour made the whole experience even better.

A wonderful trip!

We had a wonderful full-day private tour covering Gobustan Petroglyphs, the Mud Volcanoes, Ateshgah Fire Temple, and Yanar Dag - the Burning Mountain. There were two of us and the entire day was very well organized by the agency. We were picked up privately from our accommodation, and both the guide and driver were professional, friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout the tour. The Gobustan Petroglyphs were one of the highlights of the day. It was fascinating to see the ancient rock carvings and learn more about the early history and culture of the region. The Mud Volcanoes were absolutely marvelous and felt like a true natural wonder. The unusual landscape and bubbling mud made the place very unique and memorable. The Ateshgah Fire Temple was also very interesting, especially because of its historical and cultural connection with fire worship and Azerbaijan’s identity as the Land of Fire. Yanar Dag – the Burning Mountain was another impressive stop, where we could see the natural flames burning directly from the hillside. A very nice surprise was that the company also included additional stops that were not originally part of the itinerary. We visited the world’s first drilled industrial oil well and the Bibiheybat Mosque, which made the experience even more complete and enjoyable. The tour took place during the Formula 1 period in Baku, so traffic in some parts of the city was quite heavy. Despite this, our driver handled everything extremely well. He was very professional and flexible, using alternative routes whenever possible to reduce travel time and help us spend more of the day sightseeing instead of sitting in traffic. Overall, it was a very enjoyable, comfortable, and well-planned experience. We especially appreciated the private service, the extra sightseeing stops, and the effort made by the team to make the day run smoothly. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy a complete and memorable full-day tour around Baku and its surrounding attractions.

Operator response

Amazing tour. A must when in Baku.

If you are coming to Azerbaijan (Baku), you have to take this tour. I did it with my family, wife and 2 small kids (7 and 10 year old). The pick up was perfectly on time. Valeh greeted us in the lobby of our hotel and took us to the car. It was a Mercedes Benz Van, very well equipped and clean. The driver was very courteous and drove very safely. Valeh is an archeologist, he know in and out the region and all the details about it. He explained all the details, answered all of our questions and during the driving explain a lot regarding the history of Azerbaijan. It was an amazing experience. I recommend this tour without hesitation. Thanks to Valeh and our fantastic driver for the great time.

Operator response

What a pleasure to read such a detailed account of your family’s day with us. We are especially happy that the experience worked so well for the whole family, including your two children. From the punctual hotel pickup and comfortable Mercedes-Benz van to the safe driving and the explanations throughout the journey, every part of a private tour should contribute to making the day feel easy and enjoyable. Your comments about the guide’s knowledge of the region, archaeology and Azerbaijani history are deeply appreciated. Being able to answer questions, add context during the drive, and connect the different sites into one meaningful story is an important part of this tour. It is also very encouraging to know that you would recommend the experience without hesitation. We will gladly share your kind words with the driver as well. Thank you for choosing to explore Gobustan, the Mud Volcanoes, Ateshgah and Yanar Dag with us. We are very glad that your family left with such positive memories of Azerbaijan...

My father and I hired...

My father and I hired Valle for this private tour, and it was fabulous. With a PhD in archeology, Valle was extremely knowledgeable, but above all, friendly, kind, and and patient. We took a private tour rather than a group tour because my elderly father has limited mobility, and Valle thoughtfully managed these restrictions for a tour both of us enjoyed. He also arranged drivers for us for the rest of the week, both within Baku and to Quba and the Red Village and back. They were helpful and enthusiastic, and knew all of the best places to bring us! I couldn't more highly recommend him and his company.

Operator response

It was a true privilege to share this journey with you and your father. Travel is at its finest when it becomes accessible, comfortable, and meaningful for every guest, and I am delighted that we were able to create an experience that suited your father's needs while allowing both of you to fully enjoy the rich history and culture of Azerbaijan. Exploring ancient heritage is always rewarding, but what makes these moments truly memorable are the people we meet along the way. Your curiosity, kindness, and enthusiasm added a special dimension to our time together. Azerbaijan is a land of remarkable stories, landscapes, and traditions, and it was an honor to help you discover some of them. May the memories of these days remain with you long after your return home, and may our paths cross again on a future adventure. Wishing you and your father many more inspiring travels ahead...

Excellent Guide and Very Interesting Tour

We are not very good at English, but the guide explained it in plain English, so we understood the content well and had a lot of fun going on the tour. Thanks to the explanation of Azerbaijan's history at the beginning of the tour, I got a better understanding of the country before visiting tourist destinations. The content of the tour was also very interesting and I learned a lot throughout the day. The driver was also kind and professional. Thank you so much for a great day. This is a tour that I really recommend to visitors to Azerbaijan.

Operator response

It is wonderful to hear that you had such an enjoyable experience with us. We're especially pleased that our guide's clear and easy-to-understand English made the tour accessible and engaging despite any language barriers. Providing historical context at the beginning of the journey is something we value, as it helps visitors connect more deeply with the places they visit, so it's great to know that this enhanced your understanding of Azerbaijan. We're also glad that you found the itinerary interesting and informative, and that our driver contributed to a comfortable and professional experience throughout the day. Your recommendation means a great deal to our team. We hope your memories of Azerbaijan stay with you for a long time, and we would be happy to welcome you again whenever your travels bring you back.

More than a tour - also a cultural exchange

Our tour guide, Shahriyar, was kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely curious. We ended up exchanging cultural perspectives and learning from each other - a rare bonus since most tours can feel a bit dry. This one had some spice. I also appreciated how thoughtfully he captured photos of us and the beautiful, fascinating sites around Azerbaijan.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your kind review! We’re truly happy to hear that you enjoyed your tour to Gobustan, the Fire Temple, and the Fire Mountain. It was a pleasure to have you with us and to show you the beauty and history of Azerbaijan. We’re also glad that you were satisfied with our guide and service. Your appreciation means a lot to our team. We hope to welcome you again on your next visit to Azerbaijan!

Fun day trip outside Baku

Fun day with guide Aga, who can tell well. Surprised at the prehistoric drawings by the large amount on display. Driving a Lada through the landscape was also an experience in itself. Finally, we could quietly wait for the dark for the most beautiful pictures of Yanardag. Top day day!
