Shanghai People's Square is located at the very center of Shanghai and is the demarcation point of East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a flourishing place for people to look around. Before 1949, the area of Shanghai People’s Square and the People’s Park was used as a famous horse racetrack which was built in 1861, honored as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in Far East’. Visitors still can find the ruins for the former main building standing at the northeast part of the People’s Square. We will see many scenic spots around people's square, such as the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum and Mu'en Church.
We will admire the facade of Shanghai Grand Theater. Shanghai Grand Theater is uniquely designed and beautifully shaped. It combines western and Chinese architectural styles perfectly. The white arched vault sets off glass curtain walls like a crystal palace.
Mu'en Church is located on Xizang Zhong Lu, in the middle of department stores right across from People's Square. It was formerly named the Moore Church to memorize the great American donator Moore. The church was a new gothic church designed by a European architect - Laszlo Hudec. It features a brick-and-wood structure. It has a big lobby, and the central part is the main body of the church. The rectangle pillars in the hall, the balusters in the balcony and the bema are covered with artificial stones. The concrete ribbed vault can be seen inside the church. Then, we will visit Shanghai History Museum to learn about Shanghai 6000 years civilization.
Shanghai History Museum is located in People's Square area, it is large Museum of Shanghai local history. Dedicated to the history of Shanghai, the museum houses more than a thousand relics and chronicles 6000 years of history from the region. If you have ever wondered what Old Shanghai was like, you can find the answer at Shanghai History Museum. Divided into two sections – Ancient Shanghai and Modern Shanghai, the museum traces the political, social, economic and cultural evolution of the city from 4000BC to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Then, we will enjoy yourselves at Shanghai Great World Amusement Park.
This building used to be the pinnacle of Night life in Shanghai many years ago. Da Shi Jie was the happening place in the foreign settlement area in Shanghai. Crowds flocked there to see the novelties and enjoy themselves. On the first floor they still have the "magic mirrors" which were brought over from the Netherlands many decades ago. Some of the shows still survive. From beautifully woven carpets in Xinjiang, to cave paintings in Ningxia, to a wide variety of skilled artisans showing off their handicrafts. Then, we will walk around Nanjing Road, explore surrounding communities and the thinnest building.
Nanjing Road is considered to be the 'No. 1 commercial street in China', which has been a landmark for this city for a long time. Along its 5.5 kilometers, you will find over 600 shops that on average are visited by some 1.7 million people each day. Here, you can purchase everything wanted, spanning from special and cheap souvenirs to the luxurious world famous brands. You can also visit the surrounding neighborhoods and the thinnest building. The thinnest in Ningbo Road is known as Paper Building(纸片楼). The building was once reported by British Daily Mail, stated as perhaps the world's flattest and thinnest building. Standing diagonally in the front of the the building, it just looks like a piece of paper. The old house had four floors, not all that thin; it takes the shape of triangular polygon. This novel and strange building still has a large number of residents. Then, we will transfer to Yuyuan Old Street and enjoy local speciality for lunch.
Shanghai Old Street, historically called Miaoqian Dajie, is an old business street that has a combination of tourist attractions, shops, entertainment and cultural exhibits. It owes its special social attractions and rich commercial background to the fact that the earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler's store, wine shop and tea house of the city were all to be found here. Visiting the old alleys of Shanghai is a great way to discover the traditional culture of this city and experience the real life of the Shanghainese. We can walk to the Zigzag Nine Bend Bridge. Chinese people believe that the number nine symbolizes auspiciousness. Walking across the Bridge is said to bring people good luck. The Bridge leads to Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse, which is the oldest teahouse in Shanghai. Then, we will take a cruise to enjoy the scenery along the Huangpu River.
The Huangpu River divides two iconic but different Shanghai sights: high modern buildings in the Pudong area and 26 various buildings of different architectural styles on the west side. We will take a one-hour cruise along the Huangpu River to enjoy the beautiful scenery on both sides of the river including the Bund, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower. Then, we will explore local Bird And Flower Market to experience original Shanghai lifestyle.
The tour will start by the crossing of Tibet Road and Fangbang Road, in one of Shanghai’s many antique neighborhoods, also known as the cricket market. Its full of flowers, bonsai, birds, fish insects and crowds of people searching for whatever their hearts desire. It is a good place to experience part of a local’s life kind of life. Later, we will transfer to Pudong to see Shanghai's financial district and wander in the Riverside Promenade.
