Itinerary
Piazza del Duomo is located in the heart of the historic center of Florence. It is dominated by the mass of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and related buildings such as Giotto's bell tower and the baptistery of San Giovanni.
The baptistery of San Giovanni Battista is a famous religious building in Florence, located in the Piazza San Giovanni of the same name, in front of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Dedicated to the patron saint of the city, it was for centuries the place where Florentines obtained baptism and was the place of investiture of knights and poets (Dante was also baptized here). You will see the Gates of Paradise, the main gate of the Baptistry. The Porta del Paradiso, in Italian, was created by Florentine goldsmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti between 1425 and 1452 and installed in the eastern portal of the Baptistery. The Gates have been praised by generations of artists and art historians for their compelling portrayal of scenes from the Old Testament. Over time, the seventeen-foot-tall, three-ton bronze doors became an icon of Renaissance, one of the most famous works of art in the world.
Giotto's bell tower is the bell tower of Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral of Florence, and is located in Piazza del Duomo.
The "Loggia del Bigallo," a late Gothic structure associated with fraternities involved in community service, and the "misericordia," the world's oldest brotherhood for medical care and the oldest continuously operating private voluntary organization, will also be discussed by your knowledgeable guide. The building is one of the most singular and important in the city, both for the history it documents and for its structure and decoration, in which sculpture, painting and ironwork combine with equal dignity to determine a work with a unitary character.
The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence preserves the original masterpieces created for the nearby Florence Cathedral. The museum houses sculptures, reliefs, and architectural elements by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, including Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Michelangelo. Through these works, visitors can explore the history, artistry, and spiritual significance behind the construction and decoration of one of Florence’s most iconic monuments.
The metropolitan cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as the cathedral of Florence, is the main Florentine church, symbol of the city and one of the most famous in Italy; when it was completed, in the 15th century, it was the largest church in the world, and can still boast the absolute primacy of the largest masonry dome today. It stands on the foundations of the ancient cathedral of Florence, the church of Santa Reparata, in the place that has hosted buildings of worship since Roman times.
The magic continues as you ascend Brunelleschi's Dome, the city's emblem and the largest of its kind in the world (with skip the queue Florence Duomo tickets). The inside of the dome is covered in 3600 square meters of paintings, making it the biggest painted surface in the entire globe. You will get a close-up look at these frescoes as your guide explains and fascinatingly comments on them, bringing them to life right before your eyes. From a height, you will be able to enjoy an amazing perspective of the interior of the dome. As you ascend the last section and walk through the two shells to observe the brickwork up close, you will be better able to appreciate the ingenuity that went into the construction.

You definitely need to be able to walk and have stamina to go up the stairs of the duomo. Experience was great
It’s a definite must see in Florence. Our guide, Emanuel, was very knowledgeable about the architecture and art of the entire buildings and they are massive! The climb up to the top of the dome is not easy but completely worth it! The view is spectacular! The only thing we didn’t do was tour the inside of the cathedral with our guide which I thought was part of the overall experience. However, he said our tickets were good for two days so if we had been staying longer we might have done that.
Guide was very knowledgeable. The museum tour was great. The climb is a challenge; narrow corridors and stairs. Overall a worthwhile experience
Great tour on such a hot day. Some of the tour was conducted inside the air conditioned museum. Tour guide was excellent. Good co-operation and informative. Husband went up the duomo some 463 steps but it was too much for me. Anyway, very much enjoyed and husband got some great photos.
Becky was our tour guide. Friendly, accommodating, and very knowledgeable. Couldn't ask for a better guide for this experience.
Becky was an amazing guide, she has a vast amount of knowledge and exceptionally passionate about Florence's History. Highly recommend the tour! Both my girls absolutely loved it, even though they were not very excited at the prospect of a 2.5 hour tour.
The experience was great. Tour was planned really well. Our guide was polite and spoke english very well, he gave us lots of information and answered every question.
