Itinerary
Midhope Castle is Lallybroch , the ancestral home of Jamie Fraser. Jamie sets up home here with Claire in the first season of Outlander . Midhope Castle, a 16th-century tower house, is used as Lallybroch (also known as Broch Tuarach) in Outlander . Left to Jamie by his parents, Brian and Ellen, Lallybroch is also home to Jamie’s sister, Jenny, her husband Ian Murray and their children. Since Lallybroch is an important part of the Outlander story, much use is made of Midhope Castle in season 7 . Also features in Outlander Blood of my Blood
Linlithgow Palace - Wentworth Prison , castle tours from Private Tours Edinburgh. Linlithgow Palace ( Wentworth prison )This royal pleasure palace and birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots became the backdrop for some of the most harrowing scenes of the show. Used as Wentworth Prison, the prison corridors and entrance were used in episode 15 of the first series when Jamie Fraser was brutally incarcerated by his adversary, Black Jack Randall. Claire helps Jamie to escape from the prison . Interior scenes were filmed at Wardlaw studio . Built by King James V in the 1400s , the now-ruined palace is set among the spectacular surrounds of Linlithgow Loch and Peel. The tour spends up to an hour at each location . Linlithgow Palace is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Climb up to the top of the Palace for a panoramic view of the Loch and Palace
Doune Castle was built in 1400 and provides the setting for Castle Leoch in Outlander. Doune is the home of Clan Mackenzie. When Claire first meets Jamie they escape to Castle Leoch with Colum Mackenzie. Doune Castle was also Winterfell in Game of Thrones . The Feast of Winterfell was filmed in the Great Hall at Doune
Culross was Cranesmuir in Outlander
Hopetoun House and its grounds provided multiple filming locations for the series. The rear of the grand house was used as the Duke of Sandringham’s home (with scenes also filmed in the Red Drawing Room) in season 1. The courtyards provided the backdrop for the Parisian streets of season 2 as well as the Helwater stables in season 3. Meanwhile, the front of the house served as Ellesmere Manor in season 3.

Viator chose Private Tours Edinburgh for our Outlander Tour. Our driver was David. We expected our guide to be very knowledgeable about Outlander and also about Scotland in general as we would be in the car for a lot of the day but unfortunately this did not happen. Most Scots are very talkative but not David. If my husband did not ask any questions I honestly don't think he would have talked much at all. He texted me an email late the night before knowing we were at a hotel and said we would need to pack a lunch because we wouldn't have time to stop. We were meeting the next morning at 9am so how would we do that?? A whole day tour and we can't stop to pick up food? He did have to stop of course. We paid extra for this private tour and this did not fit the bill. If you are a real Outlander lover you would not want to use this person, I am sorry to say. The next day we had a tour with Ecosse Executive of Edinburgh and when we told him our situation from the day before he couldn't believe it and immediately called his partner (who was off the next day) to take us out the following day to some more of the Outlander stops and he said yes and was WONDERFUL!! I would highly recommend Ecosse Executive and Paul for the Outlander Tour. We had Alan for Edinburgh tour and he was fantastic! They both cared that we had a great experience and we did with them.
The tour was carried out in a professional way and I gave you a lot of information about the Outlander locations we visited . We received positive feedback during the tour. Thanks for bringing a packed lunch as requested. I am sorry if you were disappointed with your experience .
Thoroughly enjoyed our day in this tour. David is super friendly and really knowledgeable. Grateful to be guided around by an expert and the sites were amazing as well. Thank you David.
Thanks for your kind comments
David was an excellent driver and guide who cheerfully offered tidbits of accurate historical background, as well as filmmaking trivia related to Outlander, Game of Thrones, James Bond, Monty Python, Downton Abbey and other movies and television series that were filmed in areas of Scotland. Even though this was technically an "Outlander" tour, he was well versed in everything else you could think of, including one of my favorites: Doctor Who! He answered all my random questions about sites we passed and offered stories about others that I didn't even know existed. He told me about natural geological features of the land and even explained some of the cultural differences between Highland and Lowland Scots. David knows the best routes to get to each location, where the entrances are, and where the ticket offices are located (if they're separate from the entrances). He makes sure you see him when you come out, so you don't need to worry about wandering around looking for him when you've finished looking at a site. I highly recommend this private tour service! It's so much more personalized and efficient than group tours and coaches!
Thanks for your kind comments . I think I forgot to mention that if you make a direct booking for another tour with us you can get a 10% discount .
