Great fun and really informative tour - Our Roman soldier guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. Much more than just a tour - lots of Roman history and a glimpse of the archaeology which is not normally seen.
Great experience for my 10 yr old son who has a love of history. Very knowledgable guide with some fascinating stories.
We had Gaius. He was good but we were very disappointed as desription said group size would be max 15 but there were at least 30 on our tour so it was harder to hear the guide and very distracting. We would not have booked this tour if it had advertised as being this size.
Hi We are sorry for the confusion but to Clarify where the max 15 comes from its when you are booking for your group it means your only allowed to book a maximum of 15 people in one booking not that the tour will only have 15 people maximum on the tour. As a small company we and our guides wouldn’t make enough if we only allowed 15 people on the tour especially in the summer which is the busiest time. If you wanted a quieter less busy tour we offer private tours for people who don’t want to book on our public tours. Just email via our website www.romantoursuk.com Regards Cellan Harston
Genuinely the tour was fascinating the guide was so into character throughout the whole time and made the trip feel so engaging and fun at the same time, not to mention the fact that he is beyond passionate about what he does which my girlfriendand I could feel theoughout the whole tour. I cannot recommend this enough for people who are visiting Chester cause it really unlocks a new view of how historically important this city is in a fun and engaging way.
The tour itself is very thorough and enjoyable. The soldier gets into character and makes it fun and interactive. Very good value. The only downside is the amplified sound of various buskers along the route. Whether we were on the tour or not the noise is awful. The guide had to really shout to make himself heard.
The guide was knowledgeable, interesting and funny.
Went with two teenaged kids. Gaius was really knowledgeable and friendly. Great stories and interesting facts. Even the fourteen year old really enjoyed it. Very glad we booked this tour.
I've done several tours over the years and always enjoyed them, so I was looking forward to this one — but it really didn't work for me. There's no doubt the guide knows his subject inside out, and the depth of knowledge is genuinely impressive. The problem is the delivery. Rather than letting the tour breathe, he tries to pour every fact, date and detail on you in one go, and it quickly becomes overwhelming. We did visit a few interesting places and there was a bit of time to look round, but you were expected to stand and listen to the guide at length, and it just became too much. In the end we simply walked away, because it had stopped being enjoyable. It wasn't only me either — my daughter's one-word verdict was "Bad". A good tour should be paced so visitors can absorb and enjoy it, with time to look around and ask questions — not a non-stop stream of facts. I've enjoyed plenty of tours before, so I know it can be done — with a bit more restraint this could be a really good experience. As it was, it was more exhausting than enjoyable.
Hi Ian, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I must admit I was surprised by your comments, as the guide who led your tour received very positive feedback from several other guests on the day. A number of people personally thanked him after the tour, and one visitor even returned to the Visitor Information Centre specifically to leave both a tip and complimentary feedback about how much they had enjoyed his presentation. We also offer other tours, including our Medieval Tour, and each of our guides has their own style of presenting the history. While the delivery may vary slightly from guide to guide, all of our tours are based on the same commitment to historical accuracy and engaging storytelling. Our tours focus on the history, archaeology, and everyday lives of the people of the period, using the evidence and knowledge we have about Chester. Presenting nearly 2,000 years of Roman history in an engaging and accessible way for visitors of all ages within a 90-minute tour is certainly a challenge, but it is one that our guides work very hard to achieve. This has always been the nature of our tours, and our guides do their very best to provide an informative and enjoyable experience for every guest. Unfortunately, it isn't always possible to meet every individual's personal expectations, particularly when those expectations differ from what is described in our tour information. We therefore encourage customers to read the tour description before booking so they know what to expect. We do appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback and we have of course investigated into what you've said to come to this conclusion. Kind regards, Cellan Harston
Excellent tour regarding the Roman era at Chester, the guide was fantastic, an excellent mix of serious historical facts with light hearted details. Huge expanse of knowledge and obviously very enthusiastic about his history, . Stayed behind answering questions and happy to have photos taken
I booked this on a bit of a whim and I’m so glad I did! We had Marius and Gaius (sorry if that’s inaccurate) - and they were so knowledgeable. I’m astounded that we are walking over Roman ruins and the Pret A Manger trip was a real treat. So, so good! Thank you
