Ruinas Sanatorio Carlos Duran
Pass by
We will stop in a viewpoint to see the Sanatorio Duran Ruins.
Sitting in a beautiful area of the Cartago mountainside is the mysterious Finca Sanatorio Duran. Many people who visit Irazu Volcano drive right past it thinking it’s another abandoned farm when in reality, it was an important hospital back in the 1910’s – 1920’s for tuberculosis patients.
Since the hospital closed in the 1960’s, it has decayed and now lays abandoned. Only in recent years was it turned into a tourist attraction for those curious and brave enough to venture into this place called the most haunted building in Costa Rica.
Irazu Volcano National Park
Admission not included120 min
During the journey of approximately one hour we will observe beautiful natural landscapes and agricultural fields on the slopes of these brother volcanoes, to go to our first destination, the highest volcano in Costa Rica, the Irazú Volcano.
After observing the main crater and walking around the different craters of this volcano surrounded by an amazing lunar landscape we will go to the restless Turrialba Volcano where we will observe his volcanic cone with its characteristic activity of gases and ash.
Turrialba Volcano
Admission not included180 min
Once in the Turrialba Volcano we will venture to walk through the impact zone of the 2014 and 2016 eruptions where we will be able to appreciate the destruction that these eruptions left as well as the changes in the vegetation and the affectation to the life of the local people.
Santuario Nacional Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles
Pass by
We will visit the Basilica, it was constructed in honor of the apparition of the Virgin of the Angeles in 1635 who is the patron saint of Costa Rica. The stone statue is located in this church. The first building (chapel) was erected in 1639 and was later expanded, rebuilt and renovated.
The current building is in Byzantine style and was constructed between 1912 and 1930 and designed by the architect Luis Llach. The facades were designed by the engineer Fabio Garnier. It was declared a historic architectural heritage site of Costa Rica in 1999. Our Lady of the Angels Basilica is a first-rate National Sanctuary. Hundreds of thousands of Costa Ricans make the pilgrimage to this site to profess their faith. It is one of the most important religious events in Costa Rica.
Ruinas de Cartago
Pass by
We will visit the Cartago Church Ruins, built in 1575, Las Ruinas de la Parroquia's outer walls only remain today after being destroyed by two earthquakes, but the unique architecture and intricate design is still worth a visit. This isn't the only area of ruins that are worth a peek. Las Ruins of Cartago has a deep-rooted past that began with two brothers who were fighting over the same woman. After one brother killed the other one night, he decided to build a church on the site. Each time it was constructed, an earthquake destroyed it. After devastation in 1910, the ruins were left as they were, and it remains as the town square today.

Great experience!
I booked this tour with Adrian through Viator, but he also provides completely customised tours.
I got to see two amazing volcanoes, Irazu and Turrialba.
Adrian was a great tour guide. In addition to learning all sorts of interesting facts about the volcanoes, I had interesting conversations, learning about life in Costa Rica and getting insider information in relation to other places that were on my radar too, which was very helpful.
Thanks to Adrian’s insider knowledge of vantage points, I got some great photos, and a cool video of me walking at Turrialba.
Doing this tour on my second day there, was a great introduction to Costa Rica.
Highly recommended!
Operator response
Thank you. Booking on day two was the right call. This volcano region is hard to fit into most Costa Rica itineraries, so seeing it early gives you a frame for everything that comes after, and the questions you asked about other places on your list were easier to answer once you had seen some of the country up close.
Irazú and Turrialba make a good pair in a single day, but only if you know how to run it. As you saw, those back roads are not the easy part, and there is very little traffic out there for a reason.
Irazú is the one people know, with the crater you can drive right up to. Turrialba is the one almost nobody puts on the itinerary even though it is the more active of the two, and the drive out there is half the reward.
The vantage points are the part I care about most. Anyone can take you to a viewpoint. Knowing which one has the light at the right hour, and where to stand for the walking shot, is what turns a stop into a photo you actually keep.
Come back for the rest of Costa Rica whenever you are ready.

Excellent trip for those who enjoy nature and hidden spots
Adrian was a wonderful guide, very knowledgable about the area and the volcanoes. He picked us up right at our hotel and spent all day driving us around. He will alter the tour to focus on whatever you are most interested in. The hike on Turrialba was especially amazing as we got to see the results of a recent eruption. Also, we were the only tourists there. We lucked out and got clear views of both volcanoes. The weather is very unpredictable in these high altitude areas so come prepared for rain, chilly wind, or hot sun (most likely all three throughout the day).

Excellent Tour with Adrian.
I started my trip in San José, where I was picked up by Adrian, and we visited both the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes. Adrian was incredibly trustworthy and flexible throughout the entire journey. I made several changes to the plans and we had some long drives, but he handled everything with patience and professionalism. He’s pleasant to travel with and a genuinely good tour guide. I highly recommend him.

Superb, Informative and Safe Tours with Adrian Gutierrez
We had a great tour of Irazu and Turialba volcanoes with Adrian Gutierrez. He had deep local knowledge, was a very safe driver with a new very comfortable vehicle, conducted an un-hurried tour, and we stopped for dinner at a small local restaurant on the way back to our hotel. Adrian took us on the back-road scenic route from Irazu to Turialba. At Turialba we had an especially great hike along the base of the volcanic cone to see the varying degrees of destruction wrought by the last major eruption. Two days later, we realized we had an open day so we called Adrian the night before, and he was able to accommodate us the next morning with a tour of the Waterfall Gardens near Poas Volcano. He had great local knowledge as we went through the various flora and fauna exhibits at the gardens, an as a special extra we stopped nearby on the way back at a restaurant for local food and great on-site bird watching. We highly recommend Adrian's private tours: informative, safe, excellent value and a LOT better than a shared, rushed bus or van tour!

Highly recommended!
This was such a wonderful experience. Adrian went out of his way to make our private tour extra special. He asked us how we wanted to proceed with the day by giving a couple of different options, and was able to roll with Mother Nature! Both volcanoes were breathtaking. The views everywhere we drove were spectacular. We had plenty of water and snacks and stopped for lunch and at a local shop for coffee, candy, and souvenirs. Adrian is so knowledgeable of the volcanoes and Costa Rica in general. The vehicle was very roomy and comfortable. If I could give this experience 10 out of 5 stars I would!

Top notch
If you are looking for something to do or are uncertain about what to do in costa rica I HIGHLY recommend Adrian. You will get a custom experience that is professional yet personable. If it's nightlife, restaurants, museums, nature, beaches or city/country tours he can make it happen. My trip was definitely made because of him, and no time was wasted. I'll be contacting him on my next visit for sure!
Thanks again for taking my trip to the next level, I definitely wouldn't have been able to all that I did without you 💪🏽😎
