Meeting point
The guide will contact you the day before to coordinate the meeting point at Torre Atrio in front TransMilenio Station Calle 26 for the shared option.
Description
For some time now, communes and favelas have been associated with complex and sometimes dangerous social contexts. However, thanks to community work and the different initiatives of cultural and artistic collectives, these neighborhoods have become an example of transformation and territorial appropriation. Today, visiting them is not just a way to learn their history but also to support these proposals that seek to preserve their heritage while showcasing the impact art and culture have on the community.
To get there, you will also use public transportation: Transmilenio and Metrocable. From the Metrocable, you’ll have the best panoramic views of the southern part of the city. After ascending the mountain, you’ll walk through colorful streets and alleys filled with urban art. You’ll visit a small museum, taste traditional flavors, learn about the diversity and history of these neighborhoods, and return with fresh, broader perspectives on the city.

Brian was an excellent...
Brian was an excellent guide! We really enjoyed our day with him. Taking public transit was a really good experience and of course seeing Paraiso was something we’ll always remember. The street art was great and Brian explaining how District 19 came into being was very interesting. A tour well worth taking. Very safe.

Eye-opening experience
The southern neighborhoods of Bogota are the most populous and least wealthy part of this vibrant city without the traditional tourist attractions. El Paraiso in one such section, the terminus of the Transmicable, a cable car skyway that connects several hilly Cuidad Bolivar in the southern neighborhoods to the rest of the city. We learned so much on this tour from our guide, Alex, who lives nearby, about the history of Bogota, the political and economic struggle the southern residents fought to get services, and how they now move with dignity and speed on the skyway from their homes to where so many work in the north. (More cable lines need to be constructed to serve more neighborhoods!!) You don’t feel like an outsider visiting a slum on this tour. The people here are justifiably proud of all they have accomplished and their continued economic development. They want you to come and see. The streets we toured near the cable car station are very well kept and have stunning graffiti art. The view of the city is expansive, magnificent, and colorful. We felt safe at all times, although using the system is not totally straightforward, meaning going with a guide is better than going solo.

Our best Bogota experience
Despite doing a bit digging, I came across this tour. We were staying in Chapinero which is very beautiful but to me only shows one side of Bogota. We were keen to explore further and El Paraiso provided us a terrific opportunity to see another side of the city. Our guide Alex was very informative and we had the benefit of course of the cable car that takes you to the area. We learnt much about the history, stories behinds the street art and hearing about community initiatives to improve wellbeing of the locals. It was completely safe and I could not recommend it more highly. My only wish could be to go a little deeper into the neighbourhood.
Operator response
Thank you so much for this review. We love hearing that the experience gave you a different perspective of Bogotá beyond the usual spots. Sounds like Alex helped bring the stories and community behind El Paraíso to life, and we really appreciate your feedback too. Thanks for spending part of your trip with us!
