Itinerary
The food tour will start at Apollo Bagels, one of the most popular bagel shops in the East Village. Here, we'll try a hand-rolled New York-style everything bagel with a schmear of cream cheese.
Next up is S'Mac, an East Village institution that's been around for over 20 years. They specialize in one thing and one thing only: mac & cheese. This isn't your average mac & cheese either, it's the real deal and the best in the city. Here, you'll sample some of their famous mac & cheese, an all-American classic.
The next food stop is East Village Meat Market, a Ukrainian butcher shop and true neighborhood institution. Here, you'll sample their house-made pierogi alongside kielbasa and kabanos sausage with spicy mustard. It's one of the last shops of its kind in New York City, and a delicious taste of the East Village's Eastern European heritage.
The next stop is Titi's Empanadas, a family-run hidden gem bringing the flavors of Venezuela to the East Village. Here, you'll try a handmade empanada with a golden, crispy shell and bold, flavorful fillings.
The tour also takes you down St. Mark's Place, one of the most legendary streets in New York City and the cultural heart of the East Village. Once home to punk rockers, poets, and artists, this iconic three-block stretch still buzzes with energy, music, and personality.
The tour also takes you past the iconic building featured on the cover of Led Zeppelin's 1975 album Physical Graffiti. Located on St. Mark's Place, this East Village landmark has also appeared in the Rolling Stones' "Waiting on a Friend" music video and is a must-see stop for any music fan visiting New York City.
The tour also takes you past Porto Rico Importing Co., one of the oldest coffee shops in New York City. Founded in 1907, this iconic spot has sacks of freshly roasted beans piled high and the rich smell of coffee in the air. You'll have a chance to step inside and purchase a cup of coffee or a bag of beans to take home.
No East Village food tour is complete without a slice of classic New York-style pizza, and Cello's Pizzeria delivers exactly that. Here, you'll try a thin and crispy slice of New York-style cheese pizza, which was ranked the #14 best slice of pizza in the USA.
Next, we'll walk past McSorley's Old Ale House, one of the oldest continuously operating bars in New York City. Opened in 1854, this iconic spot has sawdust on the floors, walls covered in over a century of memorabilia, and just two beers on the menu (light or dark).
We'll finish the tour at The Donut Pub, one of New York's oldest donut spots that's been serving up fresh, hand-made donuts for over 60 years. Here, you'll get to try a selection of their best-selling donuts, hand-picked by your guide.

Lots of fun, excellent food choices, and our guide Alex was wonderful! We really enjoyed ourselves, including my 12 year old granddaughter!
Hey Kaye, thanks for this. Alex is good at keeping a group happy across ages, so it's nice to hear your 12 year old granddaughter had as much fun as you did on the East Village food tour. Hope the two of you will come back and eat with us again.
I am beyond full! Come with an empty stomach and leave in a food coma. Delicious food, amazing tour, and fantastic information. Alex was our tour guide and she was wonderful.
Empty stomach in, food coma out, that's the plan working exactly as intended. Glad Alex took good care of your group on the East Village food tour, and that the information was as good as the food. Come back hungry again sometime and we'll do it all over.
Alex was a great tour guide! She was super helpful and patient in guiding us around the city! She was super informative, told us about landmarks around the village, took us to local restaurants that I wouldn’t have found on my own.
Hey Jenn, thanks for the lovely review. Those neighborhood restaurants are the heart of the East Village food tour, so we're glad Alex could point you to a few you wouldn't have found on your own. She has a real patience for questions and a deep well of local knowledge, and it sounds like both were on display. We'd love to have you back out with us again sometime.
We had so much fun on our food tour of the East Village! Meri was a fantastic tour guide! The fact that she once lived in the neighborhood made it perfect because she was so knowledgeable about the food and the area. She told us so many fun facts and cultural references about the neighborhood. We learned a ton that we probably wouldn't have otherwise about this neighborhood. Everyone in our family loved the tour, ages ranging from 13 yrs old to 50 yrs old! The food stops were a great selection and super well rounded. This was my favorite thing we did in NYC on our family trip! I would highly recommend it and would definitely do it again!
Hearing this was your favorite part of the trip is about as good as it gets, thank you. Meri's years living in the East Village really do come through in the stories she tells, and it's great that the whole family enjoyed it, from your 13 year old on up. We put a lot of thought into keeping the East Village food tour stops well rounded, so we're glad that came through too. Whenever you're back in New York, we'd love to feed your crew again.
Our guide Seth was personable and extremely knowledgeable of the subject matter. He was prompt and well prepared as well as organized. I would highly recommend this tour and if you can arrange for Seth he would only make it better.
Bonnie, thank you for such a thoughtful review. Seth takes real pride in showing up prepared, and it's nice to hear that came through on the East Village food tour. We'll pass along the kind words, and we'd be glad to have you out with us again on a future visit.
Ryan is fantastic!! Great stops. Great food. Great conversation. Ryan hit every aspect you are looking for in an exceptional food tour. He had the story of the area. He knew the story of the restaurant. He knew the people. They knew him. It was very much like being taken around by an old friend and meeting all their new friends… who just happen to be remarkable restauranteurs. We had a blast and already booked another tour. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend you book a tour. Just be sure to wear comfortable and bring your appetite!
Thanks for this. Being described as an old friend showing you around is about the best compliment I could ask for, because those restaurant owners really have become friends over the years of running the East Village food tour. I'm glad the stops, the food, and the conversation all came together for your group. Since you've already booked another tour, I'll just say see you soon. - Ryan @ Tasty Tours NYC
Tour was great, all the food was really good and the tour guide was very informative. My wife and I had our 1 month old baby and we are extremely thankful for how understanding and helpful the tour guide Meri was in making sure that we could participate.
Bringing a one month old on a food tour is impressive, congratulations to you both. Meri will be really glad to hear you felt taken care of, she works hard to make sure everyone can settle in and enjoy the stops. It means a lot that you'd spend one of those precious early outings on the East Village food tour with us. We'd love to see the whole family back when your little one is old enough to eat along.
Great experience good food got to see a lot and learn a lot about the area
Thanks for the review, glad the food delivered. The East Village food tour packs a lot of neighborhood history in between the eating, so it's nice to hear both sides landed for you. Hope you'll wander through another part of the city with us sometime.
Alex was great. Apollo bagels rock!
Thanks, Annemarie. Apollo Bagels wins people over every single time, and Alex will be happy to hear you agree. We'd love to have you back on the East Village food tour, there's plenty more where that came from.
Great tour! Good food and fun guide. Alex was amazing!
Hey Mike, glad you had a good time out there. Alex brings a lot of the fun to the East Village food tour, and she'll be pleased to hear it showed. Come eat with us again sometime.
