Excellent tour. Learned a lot
Gary was our guide and he was very informative and interactive. We learned so many things about the famine and the mass exodus to save lives. I would recommend this to anyone, even if you don’t have Irish ancestry.
Garold was lively and informative. A great storyteller of the ship, its history and passengers.
Really great tour. Our guide was excellent. He was a really good storyteller, and the stories were fascinating. I highly recommend this tour.
The story of the Jeanie Johnston is one worth knowing. An incredible part of Irish history. The tour guide made an excellent presentation.
Katrina did a tremendous job of explaining the potato blight and the desperation of peasants working for overlords. The unimaginable distances they had to walk to board a famine ship, and the starvation they experienced throughout their journey is truly horrific. “The Hunger” is a significant chapter in Irish history that we will never forget!
Our guide was really enthusiastic and keen to talk to the group, but, the entire ship is a very modern replica. There was some detail given about the ship's use but there was also a lot of superfluous/unrelated information. You also get to see next to nothing of the ship, only the front part of the deck and one open area below deck. It was very odd that the ship seems to no longer move anywhere despite being so recently refurbished and it wasn't clarified why it had ended up in Dublin. Frankly it felt like a polished tourist attraction rather than an authentic experience. I would say save your time visiting the ship and spend more time in the 'EPIC' museum next door which does an excellent job at covering many significant cultural topics allowing a depth of discovery.
I wish I could remember the tour guides name, but it escapes me. (An older gentleman, thin, shaved head, glasses, with a great demeanor, and extensive knowledge). He was a very nice man that led a wonderful tour, describing the amazing story of the Jeanie Johnston. This particular ship is a replica of the original that collectively shipped 2500 people to the new world, without a casualty. That was an amazing feat in that era, because the people involved had heart, took proactive measures and made hygiene and best practices a priority. The ship is a work of art and the story was inspiring. I would highly recommend this museum.
The guided tour helps put the history of the Great Famine into perspective. The guide was great with very clear explanations.
I almost canceled this tour but I’m so glad I didn’t! Katrina was very knowledgeable. She was a great storyteller of the Irish famine ships. She answered any questions we had. She even helped us hail a cab at the end. Highly recommend!
