Doha:ATV,Quad or Buggy Dune Bashing,CamelRide & Sandboarding

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, and one I would happily recommend. Pickup was arranged for 2.30pm and we were collected at 2.45 — though in fairness we had muddled the meeting point ourselves, so I lay no blame there. We were then joined by other passengers, which I had not been expecting. It would be helpful if this were made clear at the time of booking; it made no material difference to the day, but I would rather have known in advance. Once out of the city the trip was excellent throughout. We began with the quad bikes, which both my daughter and I enjoyed enormously. One point worth flagging for other visitors: the insurance does not extend to riding in the desert, so I chose to drive myself rather than let my daughter take the controls. Better to know this beforehand than to discover it on the day. The machine I was given had clearly seen some service, but it did the job. Camel riding followed, and then the dune driving, which was the highlight. Our guide, Zohaib, was twenty-four, and I confess I raised an eyebrow — quite unnecessarily. His handling of the vehicle was genuinely impressive: the climbs, the descents, the way the sand sprayed away from the wheels. Watching him work was as much a pleasure as the ride itself. The Land Cruiser was clean, in good order and comfortable throughout, with plenty of cold water on board — and he took the trouble to let the tyres down properly before we went into the dunes, which tells you something about how he approaches the job. We stopped afterwards for sandboarding, sitting or standing, rather like snow but an entirely different sensation underfoot. We also came across a rather splendid lizard, which was an unexpected bonus. The sunset was beautiful, though it goes down faster than you expect — have your camera ready, because we missed our own photograph of it. We then descended to the shore of the Gulf. The air was very humid that day, so the far coast was not visible; in drier conditions I gather you can see across to Saudi Arabia. One piece of practical advice: we deliberately did not eat beforehand, and I am glad we did not. Between the quad bikes and the dune driving, a full stomach would have spoiled it. There are rough edges — there always are, and no operator can satisfy everyone completely. But the substance of the day was excellent. For anyone with a free afternoon in Doha, whether with family or friends, this is a very pleasant way indeed to spend it.
