Join this amazing walking tour to discover beautiful Matera, walking through its picturesque streets with a friendly local guide. Live an incredible exoerience among famous Sassi
In demand: 18 of the next 60 departures are already sold out.
From the operator’s live schedule on Viator, checked Oct 3.
The tour goes around the Caveoso District of the Sassi of Matera. During the tour, it's possible to visit one cave dwelling and one church. At the end of the tour, you can visit the part of the historical center with Baroque churches. Approach Matera from virtually any direction and your first glimpse of its famous Sassi is sure to stay in your memory forever. Haunting and beautiful, the Sassi sprawl below the rim of a yawning ravine like a giant nativity scene. The old town is simply unique and warrants at least a day of exploration and aimless wandering. Although many buildings are crumbling and abandoned, others have been restored and transformed into cozy abodes, restaurants, and swish cave-hotels. On the cliff top, a new town is a lively place, with its elegant churches, palazzi and especially the pedestrianized Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

i stayed at Bari so i organized my own transport to Matera via the bus. arrived earlier just in case, and ended up waiting for another half an hour after the scheduled time. as i didn't see other tour groups around, i was beginning to get anxious if the tour was cancelled without my knowledge. i called the local tour operator repeatedly - unfortunately as it was a Sunday; no one was answering! i also called Viator where i booked the tour from - but there wasn't much they could do but to lodge a report. i was rather upset as i came all the way from Bari and thought at the very least i should go wander around the sassi by myself. just when i was about to leave from the waiting point, a lady suddenly appeared and called my name. what a relief; she was my tour guide - and was surprised the tour operator didn't pre-empt me about the new delayed time as she was on another tour before. i was too thankful to be angry with the whole situation! the best part was, i turned out to be the only person for this tour and yet the tour guide (sorry i left her namecard but i think her name is Maria) was fantastic!!! as a local, her in-depth knowledge of the sassi was really impressive coupled with animated story-telling. happy the weather was great as it was forecasted to rain. overall, this tour is highly recommended - one of the most beautiful (in a very raw sort of way) ancient cities i've ever visited out of the many European ones. super picturesque in every angle... enjoy the pix! <3
An unforgettable place. Different from everything but, for those who like ancient history, will have a notion of life in the caves made in the stones (SASSIS). A bit tired but worth a visit. To rest a little, I recommend picking up a CALESINO (small motor vehicle). The drivers are great guides like ANDREA. MATERA is the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2019. It also has the modern and well developed part.
This walk was booked 3 months in advance. It took a lot of phone calls and emails to get the local guide organisation to agree a meeting point (our hotel). Viator was asked to help but were unable to do so. Therefore I was not happy when the activity was cancelled 5 minutes before the due meeting time. I will not go through Viator again as they were helpless. I would also urge anyone organising anything in the region/country concerned to get their hotel to do so for them. We learnt the hard way as the 3 activities we organised via Viator were fraught with problems. In the end it was the hotel staff who saved our days in Matera and made sure we had a great time.
This was an EXCELLENT tour! My granddaughter and I were transported back in time with an amazing guide. Thank you for sharing your city with us; we are forever enriched and we LOVED Matera. Susan Warren
will be that our guide loved what he did and loved his land but the visit was PHENOMENAL I can not say that if we did it on our own we will be back with all the beauty of the city in our hearts and memories. enjoy the history and let yourself be carried away by the life lived recently by people who lived in these caves Italy is history and Matera is one of the cities that represents it

Bruna sp? was our guide and was extremely knowledgeable about the town, and history of the region. Was not aware that this included only the Sassi portion of the Matera area. The other area on the opposite side of the valley needs to be accessed by car, separately. Fascinating story how the Sassi part of town has been occupied over the years, right up until Bruna's mother and family were moved out in the 1960's. A must see!

We had an excellent guide who gave us a full history of the Sasso caves. She was able to answer all of our questions and focused on the highlights of the area.

The guide was very pleasant but she could have had more in depth knowledge of the city. The walk was at a good pace and not too demanding for our elderly companion. The guide's knowledge of the rupestre church was excellent.
