Description

Welcome to Split. At its ancient heart is Diocletian's Palace, which is 1,700 years old. It's on UNESCO's World Heritage List too. Walk through its basement halls, stand among the Egyptian granite columns of the Peristyle and rub Bishop Gregory's lucky toe at the Golden Gate. You'll follow the original Roman streets past the emperor's mausoleum, now a cathedral honoring a saint he had executed. Your narrator, Ivica Profaca, is a licensed local guide and longtime journalist. He shows you the corners most visitors miss: one of Europe's oldest active synagogues in the old Jewish Quarter, and Prokurative Square, a mayor's unfinished copy of Venice's St Mark's Square that cost him his fortune. You start on the French-built Riva and finish at Fruit Square. Highlights: - Diocletian's Palace, from its cellars to an ancient Egyptian sphinx. - Discover Split's hidden Jewish Quarter and its centuries-old synagogue. - Hear the story of Prokurative Square, Split's half-finished St Mark's Square.

So worth it

10 out of 10 self-guided tour. So interesting and you can start and stop, take your time, etc. I stopped to do a museum tour and then for a people-watching lunch on my own - fantastic day

Great way to experience Split’s old town

Easy to follow and fun to listen to. This guide made sure we saw the key sights and understood what we were looking at. We enjoyed hearing about the history and culture as we strolled through Split. It was nice to go at our own pace.

An easy, accessible guide to see around a city.

First time to try this but we wanted something that wouldn’t be too intense and which we could stop and start as we wished. It was very easy to follow and gave good information on the Roman sites which we were interested in. Would definitely do again in another city.
