I went on this tour (and the free walking tour) with Darko. He was a fantastic guide -- equally parts informative, funny and moving. The tour is a great way to understand the history of Croatia and the many wars that have happened here. He also gave us some great tips for restaurants, shops and experiences, which made my time in Zagreb all the better! Highly recommend.

Having taken communism and war-themed tours in the Balkans before, we almost passed on this one but decided to sign up because Luka was the guide. Luka had led our free city walking tour earlier that day and we'd been impressed by his knowledge and wry sense of humor. The Communism and Croatian Homeland War Tour included a comprehensive and, at times, personal perspective of events that occurred during the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s. A moving video presentation in an underground air-raid shelter illustrated the long-lasting, traumatic impacts of politically-fueled wars on everyday lives. Luka handled highly emotional subjects with sensitivity and sincerity.

This was probably the best informational tour I have ever been on. Luka is extremely knowledgeable and has advanced degrees in the history surrounding the tour. He gave a remarkably well balanced and informative tour while keeping it light and making the whole process enjoyable. Cannot recommend more, this is an absolute must do if you are new to the region and want to understand the history of the Balkans.

Darko is a historian who presents his ideas clearly. Excellent in every respect. There are few ways for tourists to get an understanding of the breakup of Yugoslavia, thank you for hosting the theme.

We spent a fascinating couple of hours with our guide, Luka, who was deeply knowledgeable and genuinely engaging. He managed to navigate our group through some of the most difficult chapters in modern European history. The context provided was invaluable: the legacy of Tito’s Yugoslavia, the historical, geographic and political tensions that made violent fracture almost inevitable, and the series of decisions — local and international — that ultimately turned those tensions into war. We were walked through the Croatian Homeland War with clarity and care. It was history told with purpose, not for shock value but for understanding and contemplation. Luka’s personal anecdotes and experiences made it all the more powerful, especially as he was very clear to point out that he was recounting facts from a Croatian perspective but it was also important to consider wider points of view. This is a thought provoking tour given the global conflicts that are currently impacting all of us in one way or another, and it is an essential one for anyone who wants to understand Croatia beyond the postcard image.
