Discover how a dirt road known as Pine Street transformed into a "Paris on the Prairie" and later into the Magnificent Mile, the city’s premier shopping district. Hear the secrets and stories behind the striking buildings on North Michigan Avenue that have become architectural icons.
Developed over the past 100 years, the street includes historically-inspired architecture in Parisian, Gothic, neoclassical and Art Deco styles sprinkled among Modern and 21st Century buildings. You’ll see skyscrapers, vertical malls, hotels, residential towers and some buildings that were designed to embody the brands sold inside.

Docent was fantastic and always learn something new
Ron Roman led the tour and he was absolutely wonderful! Deep knowledge of the history of the buildings and very caring presentation-he obviously loves
being a docent and giving joy to other people. We have been on seven or eight tours in the last year and we always learn something new. Well done!

Magnificent Mile
My friend and I are visiting from Nashville in Houston and wanted to explore a little bit of the architecture of the city. We went on a tour with Ron, (who was absolutely fantastic!!), and learned a lot about the buildings on the magnificent mile. My only wish is that we would’ve done it on our first day here, versus the day before we left, so we would know more about the buildings and which ones to explore a little more. Thank you so much. Look forward to another tour the next time I’m in Chicago!

Fun and informative
Fun and Informative. Enjoyed our tour with docent Bob Morehead who described architecture style and elements, history and relevant stories of the buildings we have walked by many times with only a passing glance. We have better appreciation of their elegance and significance to Chicago.

Interesting and enjoyable tour!
I took this tour with Mitch, and it was so interesting! His explanations were clear and organized, yet he truly tailored the experience to his audience (and in consideration of the cold weather!). He was a wealth of information, with interesting facts and quotes. Now I can walk up and down Michigan Avenue enjoying the buildings I got to know through his tour.
Operator response

Great Mag Mile Walking Tour
We took this tour with Mitch. There was one other couple on the tour and it was a beautiful warm November day. Mitch was really knowledgeable and we learned a great deal about the building styles along Michigan Ave. as well as about the personalities of the movers and shakers in Chicago. There’s a fair amount of walking - an hour and a half that flew by but wear comfortable shoes and be dressed for the weather. This was another great CAC volunteer led tour
Operator response
