Chengdu to Taoping & Ganbao Tibetan Villages Heritage Day Trip

Description
Begin your adventure with a pickup from your hotel in downtown Chengdu. Travel to Taoping Village, a living fortress frozen in time. Built in 111 BC, this is the best‑preserved Qiang settlement. It's a labyrinth of stone where 8 hidden entrances and winding passages only locals can navigate. At its heart rise 30‑meter stone watchtowers, built without nails or mortar, yet they've survived centuries of earthquakes. Beneath your feet, an ancient spring‑fed water network still flows, Visit local Qiang households, where the people keep alive their traditions and a way of life unchanged for generations. Next, head to Ganbao Tibetan Village, the largest Gyalrong Tibetan settlement. Built entirely from river stones and giant boulders, this is also the birthplace of "Boba Senge" (Tibetan Lion Dance), a national intangible cultural heritage – a powerful, slow dance created by returning soldiers to commemorate their fallen comrades in battle. Lunch in Tibetan family-run restaurant.

Remy performed his job with great attention to detail and expertise. The preparatory session, which included an informative presentation, was very helpful. He addressed my interests, and his explanations were clear and easy for me to understand. The lunch he ordered, featuring local dishes, was delicious and plentiful!
Remy and Jasmine were exceptional guides—warm, thoughtful, and deeply committed to making our family feel at home. We loved not only the destinations but also the journey itself: the landscapes, the food, the stories, and the genuine conversations about their lives and work. Visiting Ganbao and Taoping Tibetan villages was an unforgettable highlight.
If you're looking for a wonderful and educational day out with an expert, friendly, and fluent English-speaking guide, then this trip is highly recommended! With Rémy from Canvas, visiting Taoping and Ganbao is a real experience. Not only does he know his way around this area, but the lunch in Ganboa was also well taken care of. Yes, the day trip isn't cheap, but in our opinion, it's more than worth the money if you want to see more of Tibetan culture. We spent over 12 hours on the road with our guide. Instead of overcrowded tourist villages, we found peace and quiet in traditional villages with stunning views of the mountains. Thank you, Rémy, for a fantastic day—highly recommended!
Although I’ve been traveling for business throughout much of China since the 1980s, I decided to book this tour. With Remy, I really hit the jackpot. He’s very knowledgeable about Chinese history, came well-prepared with a brief presentation, and is very personable. He addressed my questions individually. It was a complete success!
Remy guided us through the day with remarkable attention to detail and genuine expertise. The preparation session before the tour was incredibly helpful — he took time to understand what I was truly interested in and shaped the experience around that. His explanations were clear, thoughtful, and easy to follow, bringing to life the rich stories woven into the ancient Qiang and Tibetan villages we visited. The landscapes were breathtaking — from the stone‑clad watchtowers of Taoping to the peaceful mountain valley where Ganbao Tibetan Village rests. The local lunch he arranged was not only delicious but also a beautiful introduction to the region's culinary traditions. It was plentiful, authentic, and served with a warmth that made the whole day feel less like a tour and more like a journey with a friend.
