Central Park Beginner Birdwatching Tour

Description
I’m Steph — bird-influencer and host of That Quirky Bird Girl, where I share the joy, curiosity, and life lessons that come from connecting with birds. My goal is simple: help people slow down, look up, and discover that nature is all around us, even in the heart of NYC. Together, we’ll search for incredible birds like Sparrows, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Robins, and more. This stroll is perfect for beginners and bird lovers alike. We’ll learn what to look and listen for, get comfortable using binoculars, and uncover fun bird stories. Every season brings something new, with nearly 200 species passing through NYC. Winter brings ducks and resident birds, spring and fall bring colorful migrants, and summer highlights nesting birds raising the next generation. No two tours are the same, so come back in another season to experience a whole new side of Central Park’s feathered world. Leave with more curiosity, connection, and appreciation for the amazing nature happening all around us.

Itinerary
We’ll begin our adventure at Bethesda Terrace, near the horses and overlooking the famous Bethesda Fountain—one of Central Park’s iconic landmarks. This meeting spot sets the perfect tone for our journey into the world of birds and nature. At the start of the tour, you’ll get a brief overview of what to expect, including the birds we’re most likely to encounter and the key landmarks we’ll pass along the way. Please arrive on time, as I allow a 10-minute grace period before we begin our walk. During this time, I’ll go over important details to help you make the most of the tour, from how to spot birds to fun facts about the park’s history and seasonal changes. Once we’re ready, we’ll embark on our one-hour-and-thirty-minute stroll, discovering the hidden gems of Central Park while learning how to connect with nature in a whole new way!
Pause at Bow Bridge for a scenic view and a chance to spot more birds. Discuss how birds interact with the park’s landmarks and natural spaces.
Head into The Ramble, a bird lover's paradise with winding paths and dense foliage. Together, we will search for Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, White-Throated Sparrows, and Hermit Thrushes. I will teach you how to use the Merlin app here to identify bird songs and calls.
Exit The Ramble and make our way to the Boathouse where our tour will conclude.

We had an incredible experience on this bird tour with Steph and can't recommend it enough! She was so kind, knowledgeable, and thoughtful-especially during an extreme heat wave-and she tailored the tour to make sure everyone had a great experience. We saw an amazing variety of birds, wildlife, and nature while exploring beautiful areas of Central Park we had never discovered before as frequent NY visitors. Spectacular views. Absolutely a major highlight from this recent trip, can't wait to book with her again!
I had a wonderful time with Steph, she was very welcoming, kind and fun to explore central park with.
I’ve lived in NYC for 30 years, originally from London. I’ve been to Central Park countless times with my family, today we were given the opportunity of seeing Central Park from a new perspective, learning about nature and birds who live in the park via the expertise and enthusiasm of Steph, better known as The Quirky Bird Girl. I took my wife & teenager daughter, we all equally enjoyed this unique NYC tour. We now have a new appreciation for birds, wildlife and nature of Central Park. Steph is a highly knowledgeable and gracious tour guide and we’re delighted to recommend her park tours as a family living in NYC.
Wonderful and engaging experience!
Steph was fantastic! She was so easygoing and paced the tour perfectly, making it enjoyable whether you were new to birding or had some experience. Her knowledge was incredible—not just about identifying birds, but also their calls, colors, the differences between males and females, their mating seasons, and their behaviors. She was also very knowledgeable about the park itself, which made the experience even more interesting. I loved that she gave us a bird checklist to mark off during the tour and then emailed us a complete bird list afterward. She even encouraged us to keep birding on our own and let her know how we did in the future. You can tell she’s genuinely passionate about birds and wants others to enjoy them too. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone interested in birding or just looking for a fun and educational way to explore the park.
Stephanie did a great job highlighting the different types of birds we saw, 14 in total! She’s super knowledgeable about the birds as well. We also saw baby raccoons. Lastly, she was very kind and engaging with the kids.
My husband and I have lived in NYC for 11 years, but we've recently taken more of an interest in learning about our natural surroundings. Steph was an amazing guide who helped us spot and learn about almost 20 species of birds in our two hour experience in Prospect Park. She knew the terrain so well and had tons to share about every bird we saw - even the ones we take for granted seeing often in the city. Highly recommend!
We had an amazing time! We saw a common yellow throw which is unique this time of year! We learned a lot and explored quite a bit! We would definitely do it again!
Steph was fantastic — passionate, knowledgeable, friendly, and so engaging throughout the tour. She made the experience fun, relaxed, and incredibly informative, and you can tell she truly loves what she does. She was especially wonderful with my daughters (13 and 9), keeping them interested, involved, and excited to learn the entire time. We all learned so much and left with a much greater appreciation for birding and nature. It made for such a memorable Mother’s Day outing for us, and I would absolutely take another tour with her again. Highly recommend, especially for families with children!
I loved the tour! Steph was really kind and I learned a lot about the birds of Central Park. Hope to see her again in another tour. :)
