My first day in Cape Town, had the most amazing hike up Devil’s Peak with Don and Blue. Don was a great guide; very knowledgeable about the mountain and surrounding area, took lots of pictures, and super encouraging. I’ll be following his local recommendations for the rest of my trip, but I’m not sure anything can beat the view from the top!
Wonderful and amazing hike. Donovan was the perfect guide. He went at our pace, he was very knowledgeable about every question and very supportive. I could not recommend more.
I had a wonderful hiking experience with Donovan and Blu! Everything was very well organized, the pace was comfortable, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. Donovan is a fantastic guide — professional, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what he does. I felt safe, well taken care of, and truly able to enjoy the beauty of Table Mountain. A special thank you for the beautiful photos and videos — such a thoughtful touch that made the experience even more memorable ❤️ I will definitely be booking another hike with Donovan and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an unforgettable Cape Town hiking experience.
The hike up Table Mountain via Kasteelspoort Trail was breathtaking and unforgettable. Our guide Donovan told a lot of interesting things about the hiking route, plants and history. The hike was very strenuous, but it was definitely worth the effort. We can highly recommend Donovan and Ruminate to everyone.
We did the Kasteelsport hike on Table Mountain with our guide Don and honestly had such a great time. The tour felt very personal from the start. Our guide was super friendly and easy to talk to, and you could really tell he enjoys what he does. Along the way he shared lots of interesting details about the plants, animals, and some of the history of the area, but never in an overwhelming or lecture style way. It felt more like walking with someone who knows the mountain really well and enjoys sharing it. He also took some really great photos and videos of us during the hike, which we did not expect and really appreciated. What we liked most was how flexible the tour was. He paid attention to our fitness level and adjusted the pace and small details of the route so it suited us perfectly. We never felt pressured and could simply enjoy the experience and the views. We would definitely recommend this hike and this guide to anyone, whether you are very fit or just want a great and well supported mountain experience. It was a highlight!
Carmen was so cheerful and kind and gave us a safe hike, including interesting facts about CPT. I loved it and it was worth every step eventhough the hike was challenging and unfortunately without a view.
An absolutely fantastic hike with Donovan. I received lots of great tips and insights, and learned a great deal about nature, as well as the local flora and fauna. Donovan flexibly adapted the route to my pace and interests and also took many wonderful photos along the way.
Brilliant trip with Donovan - very knowledgable guide who was able to judge the weather to ensure we had a great hike up and down the mountain as the cable car was closed due to wind. Highly recommend
I visited Cape Town with my husband and daughters (aged 9 and 14) for the first time in December and was keen to book our first family hike. We are not seasoned hikers and my husband suffers from vertigo so we elected for Kloof Corner Hike as a gentler option. The service from Donovan was excellent and we couldn’t have asked for more. I was impressed with the speed and professionalism of Donovan’s responses prior to our arrival in South Africa and the option of transfers was an added attraction for us. We chose a sunset hike and it was particularly windy on the day. We felt in safe hands throughout the hike and Donovan’s substantial hiking experience and background gave us the reassurance (and more) we were hoping for. He was knowledgeable and informative, sharing interesting facts as we hiked. He was particularly considerate of our girls, lending them a helping hand (or plaster) and ensuring my husband felt safe when his vertigo kicked in. The view was incredible and the hike was everything I had hoped for and more. We found the price point very reasonable and Donovan has given us the confidence to try something slightly more challenging next time. When we do, we won’t be looking anywhere else for our preferred guide. Donovan was kind enough to take some impromptu photos of our family which have fast become screensavers on our phones! Thank you for your patience, professionalism and knowledge!
We booked the table mountain Platteklip Gorge hike with Donovan at Ruminate Travel & Experiences for 12/6. Before the hike, he sent us a questionnaire about hiking experience and an indemnity form to fill out. We booked the hike since we suspected that the cable car wouldn’t be operating due to strong winds. We also paid 400 Rand in cash to be picked up from our hotel at 6:10am. The hike started at 6:30am. We were going up the mountain and Donavan indicated that we were going slower than anticipated, so he suggested not going up to the summit and going around to a viewpoint which had the same view as the summit. He said that going to the summit would probably take another two hours and we would be very tired going back down. We took his suggestion and didn’t go to the summit. Donavan indicated that he started his business about 6 months ago and partners with other businesses but he makes sure that he does the activity for the other business to see how it is as a customer. He also was very knowledgeable about the various table mountain hike paths. When we were done, there was enough time, so we asked about lion’s head nearby. Donavan indicated that there was time and we did the Lion’s head hike but he didn’t say and we didn’t ask the cost was until the hike was done. He changed us 1,000 Rand each for the hike, which we thought was a bit high. Overall, it was a good experience hiking with Donavan.
Thank you very much for your review and for choosing to hike with Ruminate. I’m pleased that you enjoyed the overall experience and I appreciate the 4-star rating. I would, however, like to clarify a few points for the sake of accuracy and to help future guests understand how safety decisions are made on Table Mountain. Before every hike, guests complete a HikeSafe fitness questionnaire. Your responses indicated High fitness, regular strenuous activity, and experience with strenuous climbs. Based on this, the original plan to ascend Platteklip Gorge and reach the summit was appropriate. However, once we began hiking, it became clear that your actual fitness level did not match what had been indicated. This is not criticism—Table Mountain is challenging even for experienced hikers—but it does mean I must adjust the route to ensure your safety. In contrast, your sister was coping well with the pace as I adjusted it. To avoid placing you at risk of exhaustion—especially with the cable car closed due to wind, meaning a full descent on foot would be required—I changed the route from a summit ascent to a safer traverse along the Platteklip contour path towards Kloof Corner, followed by a descent via Kloof Corner. This decision was made solely to protect your wellbeing and is based on more than a decade of mountaineering and situational-risk experience. For every hike I guide, I also record the route using my Garmin GPS. This allows me to track exact times, distance covered, elevation, and my own heart-rate data. As a full-time mountain guide, my fitness level is significantly higher than that of most guests, so these recordings give me a clear and objective measure of the overall pace and exertion level of each hike. Your hike on 6 December aligns precisely with what I observed on the mountain. Based on this data, and on industry-standard guiding rates, I am confident that you were neither overcharged nor taken advantage of in any way. The entire modified route you completed took 2 hours and 20 minutes, which is consistent with the pace of groups with low to moderate fitness levels on similar traverses. My Garmin data confirm this, and my professional judgement remains that changing the route was the safest and most responsible option in the conditions of the day. Regarding pricing and services: • The R400 pick-up fee covers collection and drop-off from one location; the additional drop requested afterwards was provided at no extra cost. • The Lion’s Head hike, completed in 1 hour 52 minutes, was charged at R1,000 per person, which is standard for a guided hike—particularly one added spontaneously on the same morning. I gave you the option to summit but you did not want to... Professional guiding includes significant costs that guests do not always see: specialised training, high-risk insurance, park licences, guiding permits, operational expenses, tax, and more than a decade of mountain-navigation and emergency-response experience. These are the foundations of providing a safe and responsible experience on Table Mountain. I’m genuinely glad you enjoyed the hikes overall. At the same time, it’s important that the context around fitness requirements, safety decisions, and guiding rates is accurately reflected for future guests. My commitment will always be to ensure that every guest returns safely and enjoys Table Mountain responsibly. Thank you again for your feedback, and I wish you many more great adventures ahead.
