Itinerary
You'll experience the highlights of the Cabot Trail through a carefully planned route that balances breathtaking scenery, local stories, comfortable pacing, and reliable return to your cruise ship. Specific stops may vary slightly so your guide can make the most of weather, traffic, and seasonal conditions.
Your Cape Breton adventure begins the moment you step off your ship. Meet your knowledgeable local guide and settle into comfortable transportation as you travel through Sydney and into the island's spectacular coastal landscapes. Along the way, you'll discover the history, culture, and stories that make Cape Breton one of Canada's most welcoming destinations.
St. Ann's Bay Lookoff (Kelly's Mountain) - Climb Kelly's Mountain for one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Cape Breton. On clear days, enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic coastline, forested hills, and the entrance to the Cabot Trail as your guide shares stories about the communities, history, and landscapes that have shaped this remarkable region.
Named for the mist that often clings to its mountainsides, Cape Smokey has welcomed sailors and travellers for centuries. Today, it rewards visitors with breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline and the Cape Breton Highlands. It's one of our favourite stops for photographs and for sharing stories about the island's natural history.
Discover the beauty of Ingonish, where the Cape Breton Highlands meet the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the historic Keltic Lodge property, perched high above the coastline, and enjoy spectacular views overlooking Ingonish Beach and Middle Head Peninsula. Depending on the day's conditions and timing, your guide may also include time to explore the shoreline or other scenic areas that make Ingonish one of Cape Breton's most beloved destinations.
Explore one of the Cabot Trail's most rugged coastlines, where billion-year-old rocks meet the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on conditions, your guide may stop at scenic viewpoints such as Green Cove Lookoff or Lakies Head to admire the dramatic landscape, learn about the region's remarkable geology, and capture stunning photographs.
Relax on the scenic drive back to Sydney as you reflect on a day of breathtaking landscapes, local stories, and unforgettable coastal views. Our shore excursions are carefully planned around your cruise schedule, with a return to the cruise terminal at least one hour before your ship's scheduled departure, allowing plenty of time to re-board with confidence and peace of mind. About the itinerary: The stops listed above represent the highlights of a typical tour. Because weather, visibility, traffic, seasonal conditions, and cruise schedules can vary, your guide may adjust the route or include additional scenic viewpoints to provide the best possible experience while ensuring a timely return to your ship.

Pickup Locations & Times
Before Your Tour Tour Departure Your tour is scheduled to depart approximately 15 minutes after your cruise ship docks, giving everyone time to disembark and meet their guide. For example: If your ship arrives at 8:00 a.m., your tour will depart at approximately 8:15 a.m. If your ship arrives at 9:00 a.m., your tour will depart at approximately 9:15 a.m. If all guests have arrived earlier, we may depart a few minutes ahead of schedule. Because cruise ship arrival times can occasionally change, your ticket may display a specific departure time. Please disregard any printed time on your ticket. Your guide will meet your ship based on its actual arrival time. To help ensure everyone enjoys a full day exploring Cape Breton, we kindly ask that you disembark as soon as possible after your ship arrives. If guests have not arrived within 30 minutes of docking, the tour will depart so as not to delay the experience for the rest of the group. Meeting Your Guide Your guide will be wearing a blue Cabot Discovery Tours shirt or jacket and will be waiting near your ship, typically between the cruise ship and the tour buses. If you have difficulty locating your guide, simply ask a port volunteer or staff member for Cabot Discovery Tours, and they will be happy to point you in the right direction. Cruise Terminal Information The Port of Sydney has two cruise berths, and we will meet you at whichever dock your ship is assigned. If your ship docks at Liberty Pier, please remain there. Occasionally, guests are mistakenly directed to the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion at the Main Dock. Please do not take the shuttle bus. Your Cabot Discovery Tours guide will be waiting for you at Liberty Pier. Weather & Cruise Schedule Our tours operate rain or shine. Cape Breton's weather can change quickly, and while we cannot guarantee clear skies or unobstructed views, our guides will adjust the day's itinerary whenever possible to provide the best experience. The only circumstance in which a tour would be cancelled is if your cruise ship is unable to dock in Sydney. If your ship arrives in port, your tour will operate as scheduled.

My daughter and I booked a Cabot Trail tour through Costco on our trip with Holland America. We went on the last week in July and it was with Brian. He was very knowledgeable and it was a great tour. Additionally we appreciate how accommodating he was by coming back to pick us up since we were a few minutes late. Thank you Brian, we had a wonderful trip to Cape Breton. Sarah Levitas
Had a very enjoyable day exploring Cabot Trail in a 15 passenger van with 12 people. Brian was a great guide, imparting lots of information and stories. Took us to some off-the-beaten trail places. Brian was mindful of our interests and of our cruise schedule.
Brian, our guide, was friendly, knowledgeable and made our trip on the Cabot Trail very memorable. I would recommend this tour.
Thank you for your wonderful review! We're so pleased to hear that Brian helped make your Cabot Trail experience so memorable. We'll be sure to share your kind words with him. Thank you for choosing Cabot Discovery Tours—we hope to welcome you back to Cape Breton again someday!
Brian was an awesome guide and very knowledgeable having grown up on Cape Breton Island. Plenty of interesting stops and restroom breaks.
Thank you for your kind review! We're delighted to hear you enjoyed your day with Brian. His local knowledge and love for Cape Breton are what make each tour so special. We're glad you enjoyed the scenic stops and comfortable pace, and we appreciate you choosing Cabot Discovery Tours!
I appreciated that this tour was specifically designed for cruise ship passengers and that we were able to see so much in a comfortable touring van. Our guide Brian did a great job of providing a ton of information, but of course, his personal stories and memories were the highlights. There were a lot of picture stops, and he was smart to have us grab sandwiches along the way to enjoy later at the beach. I think I most enjoyed riding the ferry across a tiny stream and how that underscored the pace of life on CBI. It’s a shame that we didn’t have more time and had to backtrack instead of making a big loop, but at least the stops on the way back were different.
Thank you for such a thoughtful review! We're delighted you enjoyed exploring the Cabot Trail with Brian and that his local stories and memories helped make your day even more memorable. It's great to hear you appreciated the scenic photo stops, the beach picnic, and even the little ferry crossing—those unique Cape Breton moments are favourites of ours too. While cruise schedules mean we can't complete the full Cabot Trail loop, we're glad the return journey offered new sights and experiences. Thank you for choosing Cabot Discovery Tours, and we hope to welcome you back to Cape Breton for an even longer visit someday!
If you’re after jaw-dropping scenery, and entertaining stories, this tour is the way to go. Our guide Brian deserves his own plaque somewhere along the route. Not only was he a walking encyclopedia (with lineage dating back to the 1700s!), but he managed to make centuries of history feel like a chat with an old friend. What Brian doesn’t know about the area could probably fit on the back of a stamp — and not one of those oversized commemorative ones either. Yes, there was a fair bit of driving (so if you’re prone to car-induced existential crises, pack your travel sweets), but every mile was rewarded with a view that made us collectively gasp and fumble for our cameras. By the end, we were sun-soaked, story-filled, and wondering how to adopt Brian into the family. In short: scenery worth a postcard, stories worth a book, and a guide worth his weight in lobster. Highly recommended.
Thank you for such a wonderful (and hilarious!) review! It truly made us smile. We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and that Brian's stories, local knowledge, and family history helped make your day so memorable. We'll definitely be sharing your kind words with him—we're sure he'll be especially pleased to know he's "worth his weight in lobster!" Thank you for choosing Cabot Discovery Tours, and we hope to welcome you back to Cape Breton for another adventure someday!
We have been on 20+ cruises and we can say that this excursion was the best of all excursions we have taken. Our guide, Brian, was so knowledgeable of the area, took us to little out of the way places that the big buses can’t get to, stopped at a local restaurant that won an award for their chowder and had many stories to share about the area. He was also very funny - typical east coast charm! He kept an eye on the time to ensure that our group of 11 got back in plenty of time to board our ships. Highly recommend this tour!
Thank you for such an incredible review! To hear that this was the best excursion of your 20+ cruises truly means the world to us. We're so glad Brian's local knowledge, humour, and East Coast hospitality made your day so memorable, and that you enjoyed discovering some of Cape Breton's hidden gems along the way. Providing a relaxed, authentic experience while ensuring our guests return to their ship with plenty of time is always our priority. Thank you for your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back to Cape Breton again someday!
We loved the tour and found our guide to be very interesting and knowledgeable. But before you book, know that this is a lot of riding and looking with little to "explore." It was perfect for us, but I can see that a much younger clientele might not enjoy this tour as much as we did.
Thank you for your thoughtful review! We're delighted you enjoyed the tour and Brian's local knowledge. As a shore excursion designed around cruise ship schedules, our tour focuses on showcasing the spectacular scenery of the Cabot Trail with frequent scenic stops and photo opportunities while comfortably returning guests to their ship on time. We're so glad it was the perfect fit for you, and we appreciate you sharing your experience!
The tour was very organized and Brian was so friendly and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the experience of seeing the island.
Excellent communication by Misty, owner of Cabot Discovery Tours. Brian, our guide, safely drove us through the beautiful countryside. He was personable, accommodating, and very well informed. Brian grew up in this region and was the source of a wealth of information on a wide range of topics. Our transport van, which I believe was 2 years old, was spotlessly clean and looked almost brand new. Highly recommended.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review and recommendation! We're delighted to hear that you appreciated the communication before your tour and that Brian's local knowledge, friendly personality, and safe driving helped make your day enjoyable. We're also pleased that you found our vehicle clean and comfortable—we take great pride in providing a high-quality experience from start to finish. Thank you for choosing Cabot Discovery Tours, and we hope to welcome you back to Cape Breton again someday!
