Itinerary
Let's have a sample of pre-Hispanic flavors for breakfast. In the middle of the city, a railway line runs along an avenue. There, on Sundays, the most representative flea market of the capital city of SLP is installed: the rebound or better known as "las vías".We will try a sample of the original flavors of the Huasteca Potosina region. Of Mesoamerican origin, the main guest is corn in a great versatility of forms. Bocoles, tamales, tacos, sopes, enchiladas all combined with sauce, cheese and meat. A breakfast of champions: coarse and nutritious.
After breakfast it is time to visit a clandestine distillery. El Gran Tunal is an alchemy project for spirits from the potosino desert. Go hand in hand with Tomás and Francisco, our hosts. Two unique distillates from the region stand out: a Güisqui (Mexican for whisky) made from ancestral corn and a prickly pear gin.
A little bewitched after drinking these desert alchemies, we will visit the “Mercado República”. Traditional markets are the most authentic cultural sample of a destination. The people, smells, colors, movement, chaos, noise, herbal medicine, handicrafts and the deepest-rooted traditions of the true inhabitants of this colonial city. After touring its folkloric corridors, tasting the famous “enchiladas potosinas” and having the opportunity to buy a souvenir, our tour ends at the meeting point; same where we began our culinary adventure.

Miguel was an excellent tour guide! He’s extremely knowledgeable and a great host. San Luis Potosi is lucky to have him as an ambassador for the city and the region.
We had an amazing time with Miguel. He is passionate about the history of SLP and it shows. He took us on an amazing journey where we learn about corn trough the history of the town and it was awesome! We ate corn , drank corn (corn whiskey) and visited the market and learned so much about how the locals shop and what they eat. We saw real artisanal shops not just commercialized stuff. If you go to SLP you need him to be your tour guide! You won’t regret it!
This was an amazing tour that I would recommend to anyone visiting San Luis Potosí! Miguel is very knowledgeable about the history and local nature. We experienced lesser known areas of the city through the lens of corn. We first ate at a delicious local breakfast spot where Miguel explained the use of corn in the dishes. We then went to a distillery where Tomás explained the whiskey distillation process. Lastly, we went to a local market where vendors shared their stories and Miguel translated.
A wonderful tour of the lesser known areas and cultural experiences not as often experienced as a visitor to this beautiful city! Miguel provided a wealth of information and really appreciated the tour of the whiskey distillery with Thomas as well as the willingness of vendors in the market to happily volunteer information to be translated by Miguel. A great opportunity!
The tour was great. It started with a delicious breakfast at a local cafe. Miguel explained the various types of corn the was used and how the corn is processed. After breakfast we went to a distillery and the owner went through the distilling process. Very interesting and Tomás, the owner, was so nice. We ended by walking through a local market to see the various foods, produce, and goods. It was a lovely day.
Great tour. Excellent Huastecan breakfast, super interesting distillery tour with tastings with the owner Tomas, and then seeing the mercado and trying the local enchilada was fun. We’ve traveled around Mexico for 1000s KM amd 23 states and these tours are wonderful as an orientation to each city and Miguel was an awesome guide. I definitely recommend you do this tour early in your visit to SLP as he has lots of great recommendations of other things to see and do.
San Luis Potosí is a city with a lot of history and this allows you to enjoy family or alone and take some good photos. It is worth spending a few days in this excellent State of the Mexican Republic.
The highlight of my trip so far. Miguel puts it all together in such a fascinating yet accessible way—geography, history, culture, food—in a series of rich, behind-the-scenes, friendly encounters with the real San Luis Potosí. Made me think about who I want to come back with.
Miguel did an excellent job explaining the history of the area and brining people to another part of the city. Would recommend this to anyone and specially the portion visiting the distillery.
The certified tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and very kind. He did an excellent job of telling us about local culture and history and tied it all in beautifully with the scheduled stops. The food was incredible! The distillery stop was very educational and the it was very pleasant talking with the owner. Touring the market was a blast and interacting with the local stand owners and operators was amazing. Miguel (the tour guide) did a fantastic job representing the local culture and we left the tour feeling very full, very happy and a little more knowledgeable on the history of San Luis Potosi!
