Birdwatching Adventure a Day in Kigali Rwanda

My girlfriend and I had really interesting and well organized two days of birding around Kigali with our guide Claudien. Although we were absolute beginners, he gave us a great insight in the colourful world of birds there and is an expert in this field- don‘t miss it when you visit Rwanda!

We had the chance to go on a birding tour in Kigali, and to say it was wonderful is an understatement. Our guide, Joseph, was amazing, so knowledgeable but most of all, incredibly passionate. His love for birds and conservation is truly contagious. We enjoyed spending the day with him and our driver, Alex, so so much. We only wished we had more time to absorb more knowledge. If you like birds, book this tour, you will not regret it. If you don’t like birds, you should also book this tour, I’m sure you’ll like them by the end. I can’t stress enough how amazing Joseph was. We are so happy we found this tour, and honestly can’t wait to come back and go birding with him again. We were able to identify over 60 different species of birds. Thank you so so much, we truly loved it.

Amazing morning birding in Kigali this morning with Claudien in Nyandungu eco-park. He knows the park and birds very well and we were able to see 76 species in this urban park. Including several lifers. Way beyond my expectations. Great place, great guide, great experience

The Guide is very knowledgable, he knows all the Bird names by heart, knows where to look for them and points out facts and behaviour. Wonderful landscape, too. Take a raincoat during rain season 🙃 Pick up, drop off and Lunch Break worked well, too.

Claudien proved to be a punctuel and seriously expert birder, equipped with quality binocs and scope and call recordings and deep familiarity with the species of the area. He is flexible and easy company. The urban wetland is perfect for birding: paved pathway cutting through marshes, ponds, and woodlands, litter'free, uncrowded, and secure.

This was an unplanned trip for me whilst at a conference in Kigali. I had an extra day free before heading back home. Claudien made himself available and organized a great day in the wetlands. We also talked a lot about life in Rwanda so it was more than just a birding trip. I highly recommend booking a trip with him.

Claudien organised an excellent day of birding for me at very short notice. I appreciated being collected and dropped off at my hotel in Kigali. The morning was spent walking the trails at Nyandungu Eco-Park with guide Sylvere. The birds were active with a total count of 52 species. My highlights were Spot-flanked and Double-toothed Barbets, the latter with a nest. A pair of White-collared Olivebacks represented a lifer for me. We then moved on to Umusambi Village for a few hours with driver Alex. Our luck was in as a group of Grey Crowned Cranes were feeding right next to the viewing platform. Fantastic photographic opportunity! Sylvere's birding knowledge and spotting skills were outstanding and he certainly knows his bird calls. He was very professional and helpful and is highly recommended. I can always count on Claudien to arrange a memorable birding experience. He wasn't available himself on the day but hopefully next time. Thank you!

I cannot recommend Birding and Educational Tours enough! The experience far exceeded my expectations. Claudien’s expertise in identification of local species, and knowledge of where to find them, was invaluable. We managed to see 69 different species including some rare sightings. Booking was easy, the tour started on time, lunch was lovely, and the birding locations were excellent. As a solo female traveler, I felt safe throughout. It was also wonderful to have the opportunity to support a local business. Claudien went above and beyond to ensure I was able to get the most from the experience.

I had a great time with Claudien, a knowledgeable and academically-trained birdwatcher. I saw about 40 species of birds in a day in large part due to his expertise. I would happily choose other tours with this team.
