Where the waters of the seashore are illuminated by hundreds of living microorganisms (plankton) that light up when they hit the waves. The light is usually so bright that even fish can be seen in the water. Organisms that, like fireflies, emit their own blue light. Bioluminescence in Holbox is a phenomenon that occurs on the southern beaches of the island and can be observed at night when it is completely dark. On this land tour, our specialized guides will transport you in one of our all-terrain vehicles to the end of the island, to the Punta Cocos lagoon, the most virgin and beautiful beach in Holbox. Here our local guide will teach us about plankton as well as the constellations.

Very nice experience! The guides are very passionate and experienced. On the other hand, the experience fortunately respects nature, its rhythm and its hazards (depending on the clarity of the moon, it can even be canceled or be at 3 a.m. like in my case, instead of 8 p.m... furthermore, there is an invasion by hundreds of mosquitoes as soon as you stop or slow down, despite preventive products, but well, it is Holbox which is a mangrove of mosquitoes like the most beautiful rose that we love so much despite its thorns. Even plankton can be irritating like mosquito bites. Prefer wetsuits...). You must therefore prepare well and protect yourself because the activity is worth it!

If you're visiting Holbox and thinking about booking the bioluminescence tour, do it! It was such a fun and unique experience from start to finish. The tour takes you out to a quiet beach where your guide explains how bioluminescence works and shares interesting facts before giving you plenty of time to get in the water and experience it yourself. It's incredibly difficult to capture the glowing water on camera, so don't expect amazing photos—this is truly one of those experiences that's meant to be lived in the moment. Our guide, Josh, was fantastic! He was informative, kind, patient, and made the entire evening enjoyable. He even picked us up and dropped us off exactly where we wanted, which was a huge plus. We didn't get to see many constellations because it was a little cloudy that night, but that's just nature. Hopefully next time the skies will be clearer! It's a short tour, but absolutely worth it and one of the most memorable experiences we had in Holbox.

The experience was superb - quite magical to see the bioluminescence. Our guide Ivan was very knowledgable and was able to take us to some quiet spots to get the most out of the experience, tell us all about the bioluminescence and even the constellations we could see at the same time. Great guide and I would definitely recommend this experience!
