Itinerary
Meet your guide in front of the Hard Rock Cafe, Pl. de Catalunya, 21, 08002 Barcelona, Spain. Please do not enter the building, it is only a meeting point.
Most people miss out on this part of Barcelona’s history, as it's well hidden in the maze of the narrow alleys of the historic Gothic Quarter.
With your Expert Guide you will discover “El Call” - the Jewish Quarter that was once a center of Jewish life and culture in Barcelona.
Walking along Carrer de la Fruita and Carrer de Marlet, you will find remnants of old Jewish houses, shops and public baths. You will also see the site of the ancient Sinagoga Major, built in the 3rd or 4th century.
The tour will pass Plaça de Sant Jaume and the landmark Cathedral of Barcelona, and end in the courtyard of Plaça del Rei, where 12 people were burnt because of the repression of the Spanish Inquisition. It will be a thought-provoking experience that will shine a new light on the history of Jewish people in Europe.
Includes pickup and drop-off at your accommodation so you can fully enjoy the comfort of a round-trip transfer in a private car, van or bus. This way you can have a hassle-free experience without worrying about getting lost or being late for.
The guide will tell you the stories of Jewish people who thrived here during the Middle Ages, working as doctors, lawyers, financiers, translators, traders and ambassadors for the Catalan count-kings. You will also learn about the increasing threat that they faced from the order of the Spanish Inquisition, and how they were blamed for the spread of the Black Death in the 14th century and forced to convert en masse to Christianity or move out of the city.
