.Perched dramatically on a massive rock pillar, the Holy Monastery of Varlaam is considered by many visitors the most impressive monastery in Meteora, combining breathtaking views, rich history, and remarkable architecture. As the second largest monastery of Meteora, it offers a unique balance of spirituality, authenticity, and accessibility. Originally founded in the 14th century by the hermit monk Hosios Varlaam, the monastery was later transformed into a thriving monastic community by the priest-monks Theophanes and Nectarios Apsarades from Ioannina. Its beautiful Catholicon, dedicated to All Saints, was built in 1541–42. Inside, visitors can admire magnificent 16th-century frescoes attributed to the renowned hagiographer Frangos Catelanos. Combined with panoramic balconies overlooking the Meteora valley, Varlaam offers one of the most complete and unforgettable monastery experiences in Meteora.
Upon reaching Kalabaka, we begin the experience with an optional lunch stop and restroom break at the authentic Efrosino Restaurant in the picturesque village of Kastraki, nestled beneath the towering cliffs of Meteora. Guests who have selected the lunch-included rate can enjoy a choice of 10 delicious traditional Greek meal options, including vegetarian selections, served in a warm local atmosphere with beautiful views of the Meteora rocks before continuing the exploration of this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
St. Stephen’s Monastery is the most accessible monastery in Meteora, making it ideal for visitors who wish to experience a real Meteora monastery without climbing many stairs. Instead of a long staircase, visitors simply cross a small bridge leading directly to the entrance. Today, it operates as a peaceful nunnery (convent) and offers a unique atmosphere of serenity and hospitality. Perched high above the town of Kalambaka, the monastery provides breathtaking panoramic views over the Meteora valley, the Thessalian plains, the Pindus mountains, and the surrounding rock formations. Monastic life on this rock dates back to the 12th century, while the monastery was developed in the 15th century by Hosios Antonios and Hosios Philotheos. Inside, visitors can admire two beautiful cathedrals, including the 18th-century church dedicated to Saint Charalambos, which houses his holy relics.
The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is the first Monastery that we encounter on our way to the Holy Meteora and was founded at the end of the 14th century.
The Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada) is the least accessible monastery in Meteora, but also one of the most photographed and iconic due to its spectacular location perched dramatically atop a steep isolated rock pillar. The effort to reach it is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Meteora valley, Kalambaka town, and the surrounding mountains. The monastery became world famous after appearing in the James Bond movie *For Your Eyes Only* starring Roger Moore, making it one of the most recognizable landmarks of Meteora worldwide. During the tour, we make two panoramic photo stops so visitors can capture the majestic views and the monastery’s extraordinary cliffside setting from the best viewpoints. Monastic life here dates back to at least 1362. Visitors follow a scenic pathway to the base of the rock before climbing approximately 140 steps carved into the cliff to reach the monastery entrance.
The Holy Monastery of Roussanou is one of the most photographed and picturesque monasteries of Meteora, beautifully built on a lower rock formation surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush scenery. Originally founded in the 16th century and later transformed into a peaceful convent in 1988, it offers a unique atmosphere of serenity and elegance. Compared to other Meteora monasteries, Roussanou is more accessible and easier to visit. Our tour follows a smart and comfortable route, walking through a shaded downhill footpath leading directly to the monastery entrance. After the visit, guests continue downhill to the opposite exit where our bus conveniently awaits, avoiding unnecessary uphill walking and making the experience much more enjoyable.
Discover the breathtaking UNESCO-listed Meteora, where centuries-old monasteries stand dramatically atop towering sandstone pillars. Travel through stunning landscapes, visit historic monasteries, admire panoramic viewpoints, and learn about the rich history, spirituality, and unique geology of one of Greece's most remarkable destinations.
Sunset Dinner by the Sea: On the return journey to Athens, we enjoy an exclusive seaside stop at the beachfront Camino Beach Bar in Kamena Vourla, far away from crowded highway service stations. Guests can relax in a beautiful coastal setting and enjoy an optional dinner just steps from the waves, surrounded by a premium summer atmosphere and stunning sea views during sunset. For greater comfort and less waiting time, guests can conveniently pre-order and pay for their meal through our smart onboard QR ordering system directly from the bus before arrival. It’s the perfect ending to a day filled with nature, culture, and unforgettable landscapes.
The Great Meteoron Monastery is the largest, oldest, and most historic monastery of Meteora, dramatically perched atop a towering rock formation that gave Meteora its name, meaning “suspended in the air.” Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite, it became the spiritual and cultural center of the entire region. Visitors climb approximately 300 stone steps to reach the monastery, rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Meteora valley, the Pindus mountains, and the surrounding rock formations. Inside, guests can explore impressive museums, the historic old kitchen, a rich monastic library, beautiful Byzantine frescoes, religious treasures, and a traditional gift shop, making it one of the most complete monastery experiences in Meteora. Please note that the monastery is closed every Tuesday.
Before departing back to Athens, we make a short stop in the lively town of Kalambaka, located at the foot of the majestic Meteora cliffs. Here, travelers can relax, use the restrooms, grab a coffee or local snack, stroll through the charming streets, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this traditional Greek town surrounded by towering rock formations. The stop also offers the perfect chance to take a few final photos of Meteora rising dramatically above the town before the return journey begins.

This is truly an incredible tour that you have to take if you come to Greece. This particular tour group is very organized and informative. Our travel guide was engaging and funny and knowledgeable. A few things to be aware of is that you have to climb many stairs and if it’s in the summer, it could be quite difficult for some. A couple of other things that you need to know is that they do charge in some places for the toilet. Usually it is one euro. The other thing is that women are not allowed to wear pants, short skirts or shorts or show their shoulders. They do give you a wrap at the entrance in order to cover up if you need that. It is also good to carry some euros as currency because there are times when cash is required or credit card machines did not work. Each of the monasteries require five euros each to enter.
Well organized, on time, the drivers were great, our guide Vasillis was very informative, helpful and funny. It was what it said in the advertisement, bravo !
Long day of exciting activities with amazing staff. Planned very well and everyone was so nice. Everything had clear instructions and communication was great.
Long day but satisfying day. Enjoyable ride and stops along the way, visiting the monasteries is likely once in a lifetime event and this tour made the journey worth the trip.
Thank you for your lovely review! We’re very happy to hear that, despite the long day, you found the journey enjoyable and worthwhile. Visiting the Meteora monasteries truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we’re glad our tour, the comfortable ride, and the stops along the way helped make the day special. Thank you for choosing Visit Meteora!
This was along tour but so much fun and well worth it. Maria our guide was great we went to three monasteries and saw some amazing sites. There is a lot to see and do and it is a while out from Athens but we were able to do it in a day which was fantastic.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re delighted that you found the journey from Athens well worth it and had such a fun day exploring Meteora. Maria will be very happy to hear your kind words. Visiting three monasteries and experiencing the incredible scenery all in one day is certainly a full adventure, and we’re glad we could help make it possible. Thank you for choosing Visit Meteora!
This is a great way to visit the Mateora sites! The tour bus ride was insightful. It gave us the understanding and the background construction wonders and the difficulties through the centuries the monasteries experienced. Rather than just walking through and marveling at the beauty, the guides helped us grasp the miraculous achievements made to create such wonders. We typically just blunder through tourist sites and see them for what we see. I am glad we splurged and did the opposite at Meteora. There is so much to learn that you won’t get through a google search or a cliff notes version of what you see.
Thank you so much for this thoughtful review! We’re delighted that the tour gave you a deeper understanding of Meteora, its history, and the incredible effort involved in building and preserving the monasteries through the centuries. Our guides always aim to go beyond the views and help bring the story of Meteora to life. We’re very happy the experience added so much meaning to your visit, and we truly appreciate you choosing Visit Meteora!
Because it's a very long ride I wish there was a guy that will explain stuff on the way to Meteora the food stop, was not the greatest in the world. Otherwise everything went OK.
Thank you for your feedback. We understand that the journey from Athens to Meteora is long, which is why we include several comfort and seaside stops along the way. During the Meteora portion of the tour, our local guide provides the commentary and explanations, while the transfer itself is designed mainly for passengers to relax. We also appreciate your comments regarding the food stop and will take them into consideration as we continue improving the overall experience. We’re glad that everything else went smoothly and hope you enjoyed the spectacular sights of Meteora.
It is a long ride from Athens and a long day but amazing sights to see and the tour bus stopped several times for breaks and food.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Meteora is indeed a long day trip from Athens, but we’re very happy you felt the incredible sights made the journey worthwhile. We also appreciate you mentioning the regular comfort and food stops along the way. We hope you left with some wonderful memories of Meteora!
It's all a scam, luxury bus is a lie, uncomfortable, no WiFi, no water, everything broken, I have been swindled and I am a vulnerable person, I am going to report everything.
We are sorry that you feel this way, but we must clarify that we received no report during the tour that the Wi-Fi or air conditioning was not working. Cold bottled water is also offered to all our guests throughout the trip, so the statement that no water was provided does not reflect the service delivered. We take complaints seriously, but accusations of fraud are very serious and should be supported by facts. Based on the information currently available to us, we have no evidence that the service was misrepresented or that you were “scammed.” If there was a specific problem during your tour, please provide your booking details and any relevant evidence so that we can investigate it properly.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had an amazing experience on this Meteora tour as a solo traveler. Everything was very well organized from start to finish. Lunch was served at the beginning of the tour, and it honestly reminded me of a delicious home cooked meal. The food was fresh, flavorful, and a great way to start the day. Our driver was incredibly kind, safe, and welcoming. He even took some wonderful photos of me, which I really appreciated since I was traveling alone. Those pictures will be great memories of an unforgettable place. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and shared so much fascinating history about the monasteries, the monks, and the unique rock formations. I learned a lot while still having plenty of time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. If you’re visiting Greece, I highly recommend this tour. It was one of the highlights of my trip, and I would absolutely do it again!
