In ancient times, Kenchreai was one of the two ports of the inland city-state of Corinth. While Kenchreai served the eastern trade routes via the Saronic Gulf, Lechaion on the Corinthian Gulf served the trade routes leading west to Italy and the rest of Europe. Situated on the eastern side of the Isthmus of Corinth, Kenchreai sat at a natural crossroads for ships arriving from the east and overland traffic heading north and south between central Greece and the Peloponnese Christianity also arrived at Kenchreai early in the religion's history. According to Acts 18:18, the Apostle Paul stopped at Kenchreai during his second missionary journey, where he had his hair cut to fulfil a vow, probably a Nazirite vow. Paul mentions the place and a woman named Phoebe in the local assembly in his epistle to the Romans Read more about Ancient Corinth, Isthmus, Canal/ Private biblical tour from Athens or Nafplion

Corinth is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as part of the Paul the Apostle's missionary travels. The Diolkos saved ships sailing from the Ionian Sea to the Aegean Sea a dangerous sea journey round the Peloponnese, whose three headlands had a reputation for gales, especially Cape Matapan and Cape Malea. By contrast, both the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf were relatively sheltered waters. In addition, the overland passage of the Isthmus, a neck of land 6.4 km (4.0 mi) wide at its narrowest, offered a much shorter route to Athens for ships sailing to and from the Ionian coast of Greece. The Diolkos also had a commercial function in transporting goods. Little is known of its success in increasing trade but because of the length of time it was maintained, it is presumed that it had some positive impact. In addition to trade, during wartime the Diolkos may have been used to transport lighter ships across land.

Custom Tour Guide makes trip awesome

Our tour guide/driver gave us a fantastic day to experience the Footsteps of Paul in a private and comfortable way. His knowledge, as well as understanding of the best places to see history made our trip to Athens & Corinth very memorable. Thank you!!

Excellent tour and guide!

I can’t say enough good things about our experience with our tour guide Jimmy on our “Footsteps of Apostle Paul” tour. Jimmy was waiting for us at the port and was easily visible as soon as we got off our ship. He walked us over to his comfortable and clean van where he had cold waters waiting for us. He got us on the road but made a quick stop for a nice treat of delicious cappuccinos at his favorite local coffee house. Jimmy was knowledgeable on the area and was able to give us background information on Athens, Corinth, and the Apostle Paul! He even brought a really interesting book that showed what areas would have looked like historically vs what they look like today. Jimmy let us go places at our own pace and was always waiting to greet us with a smile and a cold car and a cold water when we finished touring at each location. We were traveling with our three children ages 15, 13 and 11. Our oldest was excited when Jimmy took us to AcroCorinth because he had been learning about that in the book of Acts. On another note, Jimmys driving was smooth. As someone prone to car sickness I was thankful for that. I felt comfortable driving with my family around a foreign country in Jimmy’s care and I highly recommend this tour.

Got to experience all of the sites of Ancient Corinth and Athens in a single day - thanks to Christos

When we knew we were stopping in Athens on our cruise, we wanted to experience both the places the Apostle Paul visited in Corinth and the sites of Athens. After some looking, we found Greece Taxi. They did a great job helping us plan our visit. On the day of the tour, Christos picked us up right on time and had a great plan for the day. We would see the Corinth Canal and Corinth first then see Athens in the afternoon, to ensure we didn’t have any challenges getting back to the ship. Christos did an amazing job and made the tour even more special by showing videos about ancient Corinth on the drive, giving us maps and books describing the history of the places we would be visiting, giving us some postcards and presents, and even working with us for a quick stop to get some Baklava from his favorite place. What an amazing day, and what made it special was Christos and his passion and friendship. I would definitely recommend Christos and Greek Taxi anytime you are in Athens.
