The Colosseum, originally known as Amphitheatrum Flavium or simply as Amphitheatrum, is the largest amphitheater in the world, located in the city center of Rome.

It was the area where the public and religious life of ancient Rome took place. With the fall of the Empire, the Roman Forum fell into oblivion and was buried little by little. Although the existence and location of the Forum was already known in the 16th century, excavations began only in the 20th century.

Incredible tour, amazing tour guide!

This was a fabulous tour made even better by our incredible tour guide - Alessandra! She is a true gem. She made the entire experience so much fun. The Colosseum was spectacular as was the Palatine Hill. It was hotter than normal in Rome during our stay in late May (90F+ most days) and it did get a bit uncomfortable standing in the sun at times, but having a hat or sunshade definitely helped. If you're sensitive to the heat/sun, I would probably skip this tour in Summer. I can't even imagine how hot it must be in July/August! There's also a lot of walking, some steps and hills, so if you have mobility issues, this tour would be tricky for you. Alessandra explained so much history to us and really made it fun. My entire group thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We give this tour and tour guide 10 stars!

Great tour!

I took the Spanish language tour with Marco, who also does tours in English and Portuguese. He is very good. Extremely professional and not too rushed. Both the Forum and the Coliseum are must dos in Rome, but I wouldn't recommend seeing them without a guide; otherwise, it's just a bunch of ruins. If you are there in the summer, watch out! Make sure you're prepared with sunscreen, water and protective clothing.

Operator response

Thank you for such a thoughtful review! We're happy that you enjoyed the "Ancient Rome Guided Walking Tour: Colosseum, Forum and Palatine" and that Marco made your visit even better! We completely agree—these incredible sites have so many stories hidden behind the stones, and a great guide makes all the difference. And thank you for the summer survival tips! Summer in Rome can be quite hot and overwhelming!😄 Best regards, Gray Line I Love Rome

Indepth and informative

We had a hot day in Rome and it’s a few hours in the sun- but we had an incredible guide who shared a great deal of knowledge and history. We spent almost 2/3rds of our time in the Colosseum and then walked to Palantine Hill and Forum. Tour was excellent for those seeking good information (which was half of our family) and maybe long for those less interested in the subject matter (the other half of our family 😅).

Thank you Julie for sharing your feedback! We’re happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour and that our guide made the experience even better Best regards, Gray Line I Love Rome

Don’t waste your time or money.

This was one of the worst tours we’ve ever done. Our tour guides name was Moon. She was an elderly lady who had physical difficulties with the stairs. She yelled at just about everyone on the tour at some point to keep up with the group or to hurry up with our pictures despite telling us we had 5 minutes for pictures and then yelling for us to come back after two minutes. She did the very minimum of telling us what things were but with little context or stories to bring it to life. We didn’t learn anything about the history as she seemed more concerned with constantly counting us to make sure she didn’t lose anyone. She came across as disgusted with everyone on the tour even though it seemed like a nice group of folks to me. It was so bad that we actually went back after the tour finished and listened to the Rick Steves free audio guide for the Forum which was great. It made me wish we hadn’t paid for the guided tour. It is my understanding from another guide that the licenses to do this particular Colosseum, Forum and Palentine Hill tour are very coveted and hard to obtain so one a guide gets one it’s very difficult for new guides to come in. In this situation, a little fresh blood and competition would be great for the tourists. Bottom line, find another tour company or just do the Rick Steves for free.
