Itinerary

The Corinth Canal is a waterway that crosses the narrow isthmus of Corinth to link the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf. As such, the canal separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnese, turning it into an island The canal, though executed in the late 19th century, has been a 2000-year-old dream. Before its construction, ships in the Aegean Sea that wanted to cross to the Adriatic or anchor in Corinth, a rich shipping city, had to circle the Peloponnese, which would prolong their journey an extra 185 nautical miles. It is believed that Periander, the tyrant of Corinth (602 BC), was the first to conceive of the idea of digging the Corinth Canal. As the project was too complicated given the limited technical capabilities of the times, Periander constructed the diolkos, a stone road which allowed ships to be transferred on wheeled platforms.

Corinth was a city-state on the Isthmus of Corinth, the narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece, roughly halfway between Athens and Sparta. The modern city of Corinth is located approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) northeast of the ancient ruins. For Christians, Corinth is well known from the two letters of Saint Paul in the New Testament, First and Second Corinthians. Corinth is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as part of Paul the Apostle's missionary travels. In addition, the second book of Pausanias' Description of Greece is devoted to Corinth. Ancient Corinth was one of the largest and most important cities of Greece, with a population of 90,000 in 400 BC. The Romans demolished Corinth in 146 BC, built a new city in its place in 44 BC, and later made it the provincial capital of Greece.

Great tour to see multiple sites in one day

This tour was amazing! It was a great trip for varying ages and abilities. There were 7 of us from teens to 70s and we all had a great time on this private tour. There was something for everyone to see at all the sites. If someone wanted to explore a little more there were opportunities for that. There were also great spots in the shade and in cafes for those who didn’t want to. Everyone had a great time exploring the historical sites, enjoying great views, and shopping! It was very hot but the air conditioned van and water provided were great. Our tour guide, Chris, was also wonderful! He was super flexible and knowledgeable. He did not rush us at all and we actually went longer than the listed tour time! He even took us to a couple extra sites that we were interested in. He gave us great information on the drives and made us all feel welcomed. He also helped us arrange a hotel to port transfer. I would recommend this tour and Chris to anyone!

Operator response

We’re absolutely *delighted* to hear how much your family (teens to 70s—what a wonderful range!) enjoyed your private tour with **Chris**! It’s music to our ears that every detail—from shaded rest spots and café breaks to the **air-conditioned van** and surprise extra sites—made the day seamless and engaging for all. Chris’s flexibility, deep knowledge, and generosity with time (no rushing, only *adding* to your experience!) embody exactly what we strive for. We’re especially grateful he could assist with your **hotel-to-port transfer**, too—it’s those little touches that turn a great tour into a cherished memory. Thank you for recommending Chris and our team so warmly; we’ve shared your praise with him, and he’ll be over the moon. Whenever you’re ready to explore more (with more shade and AC, of course!), we’d love to welcome you back. With heartfelt thanks, Andreas Yomadic Tours

A great day in Corninth and surrounding area.

We had a great day. Our guide John picked us up right on time at our hotel. He was very knowledgable about what we wanted to see and do. He gave us advice on time to spend in each place, but we could decide. His recommendation for lunch was excellent and reasonably priced. It was warm so he provided us with plenty of water. Very nice and comfortable car. We have been on many tours, and this was one of the best.
