Altun Ha Heritage Tour from Belize City

My dad and I had the absolute pleasure of spending several days with Albert Alvarez of A Plus Adventures Belize during our trip, and I genuinely cannot say enough good things about him. “A Plus” honestly needs another plus, because Albert gave us A++ service from beginning to end. Our first experience with him was a Belize City tour. What could have easily been a basic driving tour became one of the most interesting parts of our trip because of Albert. He taught us about Belizean history, George Price, the different cultures and people of Belize, colonization, infrastructure, weather, the geography of Belize City, why certain cemeteries are built the way they are, current development, and so much more. What stood out immediately was that he never sounded like someone simply memorizing a script. His knowledge felt natural and came from genuine love and pride for his country. He has a strong, engaging presence and a way of telling stories that makes you actually want to listen. He also suggested that my dad and I stop by the beautiful waterfront BELIZE sign for pictures, which gave us some of our favorite photos from the trip. The following day, Albert took us to Altun Ha. Once again, he was informative, funny, patient and genuinely excited for us to experience something he has already seen countless times during his many years in tourism. That impressed me. After doing these tours for decades, he still seemed just as happy watching us experience Belize for the first time. I decided to climb all of the temples while my dad stayed below, and Albert made sure I knew the safest routes up and down. He also helped reassure my dad while he watched me climb. Albert was incredibly patient while I stopped for pictures and took my time experiencing the site. We learned so much about Maya history and culture, and the entire experience was beautiful. Afterward, we went to eat together and continued talking and learning. When it was time to leave, Albert went above and beyond by offering to take us all the way back to our accommodations even though that was not originally part of the arrangement. Our rental was extremely difficult to locate because it appeared under multiple names and locations online. We spent quite a while trying different GPS directions before finally contacting the property owner for directions. Through all of this, Albert never became impatient or frustrated. He stayed calm, kept his great attitude, figured it out and made sure we got safely back. During that same day, we started talking about ziplining and cave tubing. We had not originally booked either one, but Albert explained the experiences to us and worked with my dad to arrange a last-minute adventure that accommodated what each of us wanted to do. That turned into another AMAZING day. Albert first took us ziplining. I was nervous beforehand, but I decided to do it, and he was genuinely excited for me when I came back smiling and proud of myself. Because he knows these locations so well, he even knew exactly where my dad should stand below to get a great view and video of me coming down the zipline. That little detail says so much about how much experience Albert has and how attentive he is to his guests. Next was cave tubing. The guide Albert originally expected to meet us wasn't available when we arrived. Instead of leaving us waiting around or making it our problem, Albert immediately started making calls and had another trusted guide there within minutes. That guide was Roger, and Roger was wonderful. He took us through the rainforest, taught us about the plants, Maya history and the surrounding environment, kept us consistently laughing with dad jokes, helped us with our tubes and life jackets, and made two people who are definitely NOT strong swimmers feel completely safe and comfortable throughout the caves. Roger was knowledgeable, funny and professional and was a great reflection of the kind of people Albert trusts to take care of his guests. When we finished, Albert was almost as excited about our experience as we were! He wanted to hear how everything went, what surprised us, what we thought of the caves and how we felt about the adventure. That is something I will remember about him: he was genuinely invested in whether we were having a good time. Even the small things showed his character. My dad forgot to bring a full set of dry clothes after cave tubing and still had wet pants for the ride back. Albert didn't complain or embarrass him. He simply said it was no problem and put protective plastic/tarp over his seat so my dad could ride comfortably without damaging the vehicle. We ate together again afterward, Albert helped me choose a local dish and explained some of the history behind it, and on the drive back he even asked me to play some of my own music instead of his usual playlist. He listened, asked about different artists and genuinely joined in the conversation. By the end of our time together, it didn't feel like we had simply hired a driver or tour guide. It felt like we had gotten to know a genuinely good person. Albert is an incredible conversationalist, storyteller, historian, guide and host. He is patient, funny, kind, adaptable and extremely knowledgeable about Belize. Most importantly, you can tell that his work is personal to him. He wants people to understand his country, enjoy it, feel safe and leave with great memories. Before we parted ways, he told us not to be strangers and encouraged us to come back and explore even more of Belize. He already has me interested in visiting the local cacao/chocolate experiences next time. I kept his business card because when I return to Belize someday, especially if I bring my partner or other family and friends, Albert and A Plus Adventures will be the first people I contact. Thank you, Albert, for being such a huge part of what made our Belize trip special. My dad and I came here as visitors, but because of people like you, we got to experience much more than sightseeing. We got history, culture, adventure, laughter and genuine human connection. Great tour guide! We booked last minute due to our original tour being cancelled. We got a private tour and were able to take a very scenic route to the ruins! Had a great time and learned so much!

Had an absolutely amazing 4 hours with Waynie. Great communication before and during the tour. Picked up outside the cruise terminal in belize and taken to the site (about 70 mins away). Waynie gave lots of details and information about the country and places on the ride. Quick access to the site, Waynie was so knowledgeable and talked us through the displays and information in the Mayan museum, then took us around the site and took photos/videos, we were on site for about 90 minutes before returning to tbe port terminal. Take Mozzie spray as needed. Thanks Waynie...an amazing 4 hours

Albert was a an amazing tour guide! He had such knowledge of every area that we passed and a phenomenal understanding of the history. He brought the stories to life.

I will start with saying the Altun Ha temples are worth a visit. Visited off a cruise ship. However, my family of 5 paid $425 + $50 entrance fees for what boils down to a taxi ride and 5-10 min verbal introduction to the temples. Meeting was fine. The drive out/back about an hour. The driver shared a lot about Belize. All good. I missed the tour fine print and then had to pay $10 USD per person for entry ($50 USD). Went downhill from there. Walking in I was thinking "well, what the heck did I pay $425USD for if entry isn't even covered." Then I realized most of the groups were large cruise ship tours...some were small groups with private guides, OK, paying for the personal tour guide... Nope. The Driver / "tour guide" walked us in. Talked for like 5-10 minutes max, said he had to leave to do "paperwork." We then wandered aimlessly taking some great photos...but not really understanding what was what. In fact, some OTHER private tour guides gave us some information and took pictures of us an a family. In the end, I wonder how much a taxi would have been. Or just a cruise excursion, which was A BIT more money per person, but I think included more, and maybe food. For comparison, we got a private guide through Tripadvisor in Cozumel; we saw 2-3 sites, all site fees included, had lunch, and snorkeled...all for about the same amount of money. It was great and worth it. Bottom line: recommend looking at OTHER OPTIONS to see the site!!
