Alcazaba of Almeria

Almeria was founded in the 10th century as a defensive outpost and around 933 the concept of the fortress was initiated under Adb al Rahman III. It remained under control of the Moors until late 1400's and then fell into disrepair and restoration commenced in the mid-twentieth century. The Alcazaba has been restored very well and is a remarkable old fortress on the hill at the back of Almeria. It is free to enter and a very interesting place and a must see in Almeria.

Beautiful place but very windy in the top. Be careful. We came by public transport and then walked to the place. At the entrance you can buy a ticket. Walk around and enjoy your time. Also it has amazing view from the top.

We visited the castle on a hot summers day in July. First off, the entrance was free which was a present surprise. We entered the castle and walked round the grounds. Lots of beautiful history to admire and some great views and photo opportunities across the whole site! The complex has toilets and a couple of vending machines for refreshments. We wasn't part of a tour, we did it ourselves. Definitely worth a visit. Be warned, lots of steps to climb but worth it!

Turned up on bank holiday to find it closed! Said it should have been open from 9-3 on public holidays/bank holidays. Didn’t put anything on their website til 11am on the day. Very disappointing !!

Built in the tenth century by Caliph Abd- al-Rhaman III, La Alcazaba, dominates the Almeria skyline, and can be seen from any part of the city. This huge military fortification has three huge walled enclosures. The first enclosure was designed as a military camp and a place for refuge for the public when the city came under siege. Today the area has been transformed into a garden. The second enclosure was the centre of the fortress and housed Moorish kings, when resident in the city. It contained public baths, a mosque, homes and a palace. The third enclosure was added by the Catholic monarchs. The fortress is guarded by three towers, including the impressive Tower of Homage residence of the fortress governor. There are stunning views from the Fortress walls over the city. The fortress is also used as a film location. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Conan the Barbarian had scenes filmed here. Free to enter.

The Alcazaba of Almería is a breathtaking fortress that captures the essence of Andalusian history and Moorish architecture. Beautiful guided tour of the Alcazaba of Almeria , I recommend during your holiday in Andalusia. Beautiful views. View of the city and port of Almeria. Iconic monument of the city, offering a journey into the Arab history of the city. Currently under renovation!

The guide did not show up for the tour and the operator refused to refund us. Do not book with this disreputable company. Although we made two phone calls and several text messages while waiting we did not get any response until well after the time of the tour. And when we did, the person communicating could only do so in Spanish (I.e., did not speak English).

I was pleasantly surprised, it is currently undergoing conservation renovations but you can visit the main areas of the Alcazaba as towers, classrooms and lounges, as well as the courtyards. We have been over an hour and a half and that there were areas that still could not be visited by restoration!! All very clean and tidy. Very attentive staff. More than recommended, we would return!!
