3 Days Guided Tour Throughout Danakil Depression in a Small Group

We had an unforgettable time in Afar and Tigray! We flew from Addis to Semera and were picked up directly from the airport. All tours, accommodations, and meals were perfectly organized, and the guides, drivers, and guards were always very attentive and took great care of us. We always felt safe, although the constant presence of weapons in Danakil should not bother you. After three days in Danakil, the Erta Ale volcano, and Dallol, we were taken to Mekelle, from where we visited the Abuna Yemata rock church. This route proved to be very effective, as we did not have to drive the same way back to Semera and could still see the impressive landscapes of Tigray during the drive. From Mekelle, we then flew back to Addis. Overall, the four days were physically quite strenuous, as the high temperatures and long drives take their toll. But it is definitely worth it, and you are always happy to get back into the air-conditioned cars between stops. A cook prepared meals for us daily, and there was even an appetizer and a dessert in the evening. We had no health problems. We only took electrolytes, as you simply sweat a lot. Our driver Brahn and our guide Asre took us through the desert in Danakil for three days. The Erta Ale volcano has not had a lava lake since the last eruption in December 2025, as parts of the crater have collapsed. But walking around the crater is still very impressive, and we saw a lot despite the smoke. The salt lake and Dallol are even better than in the photos seen so far. Our guide Berhan then accompanied us from Mekelle and was a pleasant and funny guide! I can highly recommend the tour and would book it again through Lucytours at any time. Communication in advance always worked smoothly and Kiros was able to plan our trip perfectly despite a spontaneous flight rebooking. Next time we would stay one or two days longer in Tigray.

We are a family of three(including a 10-year-girl) and we had a wonderful experience with Lucy Ethiopia Tours on our five-day trip, covering Afar in the north, the Omo Valley in the south, and Addis Ababa. The highlight of the trip for us was definitely Afar, especially our driver Abraham and guide Yonas. Afar is an incredibly demanding destination, and their professionalism made all the difference. We had to leave around 2 a.m. on the second day and drive through complete darkness, rough roads, sand dunes, potholes... Abraham’s driving was exceptionally skilled and careful, always finding the best way through the difficult terrain while trying to keep the journey as comfortable as possible. Yonas was equally impressive. He was consistently positive, cheerful, attentive, and thoughtful. His attitude transformed what could have been an exhausting journey into something we genuinely enjoyed. Even the drivers from the other vehicles in our group were incredibly kind and helpful—one even lent us his personal neck fan to help us cope with the heat. We really appreciate the team's work. In Addis Ababa, our guide Solomon also gave us a great sense of security while remaining very flexible and accommodating. There were, of course, a few small imperfections along the way, but they did not take away from the overall experience in a country where traveling can sometimes be logistically challenging. Great tour. Danakil exceeded hype in its beauty. DO take the dip in the small salt pool on the salt flats (I’ve still got a smile on my face). Finally, Lucy Ethiopia was a great choice of tour operator. As a solo traveler I paid slightly more than some others in group but the value of my using this operator really showed when overnight, all flights were cancelled out of Mekele due to unrest in Northern Ethiopia. With one WhatsApp message, Kiros rebooked my flight from another airport outside the affected area and arranged transport (with no charge). In less than a day, I was back on schedule.
