Welcome to a darker side of Bratislava. This tour that you are currently reading about is a very unique and one of a kind perspective on Bratislava, Slovakia and Czechoslovakia in the last 100 years. This a very specific tour. Your 5eur price, is a reservation fee for having a spot on the tour. It is split between Viator and the management of the tours. The guides on these tours are paid by the contributions at the end of the tour, based on how you enjoyed it. We will introduce you to a very dynamic and difficult period in the creation of our identity and show you through very unique sites the ups and downs of the previous century. We will talk about the end of the monarchy, following the end 1st WW, the 1st CSR, Fascist Slovakia, Communist CSSR, The Federation and finally the modern Slovak Republic. If you will have an amazing experience in our city and your guide will at least meet your expectations, we suggest tipping 10-20 EUR per person.

At the last synagogue in Bratislava, we discuss the 2nd World War and holocaust in Slovakia.
We will discuss the end of the 2nd World War and the transition into our communist period.
Freedom Square
At this square, we will go through the communist terror and the change in urban planning in the "government district"
The top 30 ugliest buildings in the world and communist architecture.
Palace of the executive branch of our state. Government palace and offices.
Presidential Palace
The White house of Slovakia. Here we will talk about the youth groups and general life during the communist parties period.
SNP Square (Namestie SNP)
Here we finish and talk about the end of the communist parties regime and the fall of the wall. Mentioning the 90's when Czechoslovakia falls apart and Bratislava becomes the capital of the new state - Slovakia.

Our guide (Michael I think) was excellent. Really in depth, yes, a little gloomy, but ever so interesting. He’s like a super fascinating history professor. So glad we booked.

Knowledgeable Guide
This tour is a free tour, tips are optional. Sebastian is a dedicated guide who outlined the history of Bratislava during the communist era using his deep knowledge and his interest and insight of the city. And he did it in a interesting way! We walked to various monuments and buildings of significance and he explained in clear terms using informative photographs the historical events that happened at certain spots in the city. Most insightful. He deserved a generous tip!

Excellent and balanced insight into modern history of Slovakia
There is alot of walking but Sebastian provides a fascinating experience of modern Slovakia. Water stops,toilet stop, stop for Slovak donut all included!!And Sebastian generously provided us with a comprehensive list at the end of where to eat etc in Bratislava!! He is a very knowledgeable guide,answers questions and is very friendly.He manages a large group with skill and ease

A different perspective on Bratislava
I highly recommend the 20th Century Tour: World War 2 and Communism in Bratislava! Our guide, Sebastian, was absolutely amazing. He is incredibly erudite and knows his city and its history like nobody else. His deep knowledge of the communist era added immense value to the experience. For 3 hours, he took us outside the busy tourist center, which was a real breath of fresh air. It was fascinating to discover a different, more authentic side of Bratislava through such well-documented historical context. If you want to truly understand the city's past with a passionate expert, this tour is a must-do!
