12 Days Northern Ethiopia Tour

Our group of 10 people spent 12 days traveling through northern Ethiopia with Danakil Depression Tours, visiting Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, the Blue Nile Falls, Gondar, the Simien Mountains, Lalibela, the rock-hewn churches of Tigray, and finally the Danakil Depression. Traveling as a group of 10 for 12 days is not always easy, especially with the amount of driving and different places we wanted to visit, but everything was well organized and the trip went very smoothly overall. We really enjoyed Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, especially visiting the monasteries and seeing the scenery around the lake. The Blue Nile Falls were another nice experience. In Gondar, we explored the historic sites and learned more about the history of the Ethiopian emperors. The Simien Mountains were one of the highlights for many of us. The landscapes were spectacular, and seeing the gelada baboons was a memorable part of the visit. Lalibela was another unforgettable stop. Seeing the rock-hewn churches in person was amazing, and our guide gave us plenty of information about their history and religious importance. We also really enjoyed Tigray. The ancient churches, remote locations, and dramatic mountain scenery made this part of the trip feel like a real adventure. Some of the journeys were long, but the places we reached were worth the effort. The final part of our journey was the Danakil Depression. It was completely different from everything else we had seen during the trip. The extreme heat was challenging, but the salt landscapes, Lake Assale, Dallol area, and volcanic scenery made it a very unique experience. A special mention has to go to Mickey, the owner of Danakil Depression Tours. He was involved with our group from the beginning of the planning until the end of the 12 days. With 10 people traveling together, there were naturally many questions and things to coordinate, but Mickey was always available and reliable. Knowing that we could contact him whenever something came up gave us a lot of peace of mind. The guides, drivers, and the rest of the Danakil Depression Tours team were also excellent. They were friendly, patient, and helpful throughout the trip and worked hard to make sure our group was comfortable. After 12 days together, we came away with a lot of great memories and many photos. My travel companion and I have just finished an incredible 12-day journey through Northern Ethiopia, visiting Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains, Lalibela, and the Danakil Depression. Looking back now, it is difficult to choose just one favorite part because every destination gave us a completely different experience. Before coming to Ethiopia, we were excited but also a little unsure about what to expect. After 12 days, we can honestly say that Ethiopia surprised us in the best possible way. The landscapes, history, people, food, and cultural experiences were far beyond what we had imagined. From the moment we arrived, everything was well organized. We were picked up, transported between destinations, and supported throughout the trip. Having a private tour for just the two of us made a big difference because we could enjoy the journey at our own pace and ask as many questions as we wanted. Bahir Dar and Lake Tana Our first days in Bahir Dar were a wonderful introduction to Ethiopia. The atmosphere around Lake Tana was peaceful and beautiful, and our boat trip on the lake was one of those moments where we simply stopped and enjoyed where we were. Visiting the historic monasteries was fascinating. The colorful religious paintings and the stories behind them gave us a much better understanding of Ethiopian history and Orthodox Christian traditions. We also enjoyed the Blue Nile area and the beautiful scenery around Bahir Dar. It was a relaxing beginning before moving on to the more adventurous parts of our journey. Gondar – stepping into Ethiopian history Gondar was another highlight. Walking through the Royal Enclosure and seeing the old castles in person was completely different from seeing photographs. Our guide explained the history behind the different buildings and Ethiopian emperors, and this made the visit much more meaningful. We also visited Debre Berhan Selassie Church. The famous ceiling with the painted angel faces was beautiful, and we could have spent much longer there simply looking at the details. What we particularly appreciated was that our guide never made us feel rushed. We had time to look around, take photographs, ask questions, and enjoy the atmosphere. Simien Mountains – breathtaking! The Simien Mountains were probably the biggest surprise of the entire trip. The scenery was absolutely spectacular. Huge cliffs, deep valleys, dramatic mountain peaks, and endless views made us stop again and again to take photographs. But the most memorable part was seeing the Gelada baboons. Watching them moving around naturally in the mountains and getting so close to them was an experience we will never forget. The hiking was also a great experience. It felt like we were genuinely exploring rather than simply visiting a tourist attraction. At some viewpoints we just stood there quietly looking at the mountains. Those are the moments that stay with you long after the trip is over. Lalibela – something we will never forget Lalibela was truly special. We had seen pictures of the famous rock-hewn churches before coming to Ethiopia, but photographs really cannot prepare you for seeing them in person. Walking down into the rock and discovering the churches was incredible. It is difficult to understand how these extraordinary structures were created until you actually stand there. Our guide gave us historical and cultural explanations throughout the visit, and we learned much more than we would have by exploring alone. Lalibela was one of those places where we both looked at each other and said, “We are really here.” Danakil Depression – the adventure of a lifetime Then came the Danakil Depression — completely different from everything we had experienced before. The landscape looked almost unreal. The heat, the enormous open desert, salt formations, Lake Assale, Dallol, and the remote surroundings made us feel like we had entered another world. The conditions were challenging, but that was also part of the adventure. We were especially grateful for the organization and support during this part of the trip. Having experienced drivers, guides, and a cooking/support team made us feel much more comfortable in such a remote environment. Watching the landscape change and seeing the incredible colors and salt formations was something we will remember for a very long time. The people made the journey even more special Beyond the famous places, one of the things we will remember most is the people we met. We experienced genuine Ethiopian hospitality throughout the journey. We met local people, saw different ways of life, tried Ethiopian food, and had many small interactions that made the trip feel personal rather than simply being a sightseeing tour. Our guide was patient, knowledgeable, and always willing to explain things. Our drivers were professional and careful, especially on the long and sometimes difficult roads.
